Yes, we did win the division. The ACC and NCAA chose not to recognize that. We didn't. Get lost you bum.

RE: New Carolina Football Billboards in Charlotte

Ah, jnellisnc, Carolina WAS the coastal division regular season champion -- had the identical record as Miami and Georgia Tech. Each team beat one of the other two, so the first tiebreaker (head-to head) does not settle the matter. The next "tiebreaker" would be record against the 4th place team (since the first 3 are tied). Both Miami and Carolina beat Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech did not. Georgia Tech is out. Then since it's down to two, it goes back to head to head, and Carolina beat Miami. Carolina was indeed division champ -- they were not eligible for POST season play but they were eligible during the regular season.

The billboard is fine. Leave it up.

Need these up and down 40 in the triangle. Tired of seeing "our state" logos everywhere. Need more Carolina Blue!

Re: New Carolina Football Billboards in Charlotte

So if State does it, that makes it ok for UNC to do it? This board hates everything about State so that wont cut it. If you are on probation, you can't win ACC championships. So, i dont think you should put up billboards claiming you are champs. Have some objectivity please.

This isn't even about the NCAA. The Big 10 allowed Ohio St to be acknowledged as division champs, because their on filed play determined it.

Last time i checked, UNC wasnt in the Big 10, but the ACC. The ACC didnt call UNC champs so the school should follow the rules of its conference.

Any billboard space about to open up (1) across the street from ACC headquarters,(2) on Hillsborough St. within plain view of Debbie Yow's office, and (3) directly across the street from Dan Kane's cubicle?

Put them all over the state.

UNC putting that up is 1/10000th as inappropriate as State putting up signs that claim this is *their* state.

Re: New Carolina Football Billboards in Charlotte

Just being on probation doesn't make you ineligible. In fact, so was ALABAMA football in 2009 -- on probabtion -- yet they were SEC and BCS champs. As was st8 basketball in 1973 -- ACC champions AND on probation. Imagine that.

Facts are facts. Carolina won the Coastal fair and square ON THE FIELD during the regular season in which they WERE eligible to participate. Georgia Tech played FSU in the ACC CG, because Carolina wasn't eligible for POST season and Miami chose to self-penalize. Fact. Just because you're uncomfortable doesn't make it untrue.

Re: New Carolina Football Billboards in Charlotte

I love the billboards & the attitude of this staff. I would also be okay with one that featured multiple angles of the Gio punt return with the caption "Flagshipped" or "Who's state, b!tches?!?". However, according to an October press release from the ACC:

“The decision was made that should a member institution be ineligible for postseason competition due to NCAA sanctions, it will be ineligible for regular season or divisional recognition.”

Will not provide a link because it was on Andy Carter's blog. May not be factually accurate, not that I consider the source!

They did win the Coastal, but they were not eligible for post-season play. Had they been eligible, they would have played in the ACC Championship game against FSU. In fact, GaTech was the third in line, because 2nd place Miami made themselves ineligible for post season, as well.

Lol it's okay to be upset knowing that we won the Coastal, and it's okay to be upset knowing that we'll probably win it again next year.

Not your state, and you know it.

Re: New Carolina Football Billboards in Charlotte

Can I just say something real quick? Don't get me wrong, I loved every second of that punt return. I still get chills thinking about it. But I get tired of people saying that's why we won. Has it occurred to anybody we had a good chance of winning, even if Gio had fair caught the ball? Then we would probably be talking about what a hero Casey Barth is instead. Either way, that was just one win in a list of 8 that led to us earning the title of coastal division champs. Ask the five ACC teams we beat en route to earning that title if Carolina being on probation made the sting of losing hurt any less.

Cuz if there's soemthing to be proud of, its Georgia Tech's "effort" in teh championship game.

Have you guys canceled your series with MTSU yet?

So many people don't know how this works.

The tie break determines who represents the coastal, not who wins it. Had everyone been eligible, all three would have been recognized as co-coastal champs, regardless of the tie breaker.

The ACCCG "effort" that had us down by 6 points with the ball with a couple of minutes to go in a game that nobody (even Tech fans) thought we had a chance in? Yeah, I was pretty proud of the way the team played, even though they fell short. Maybe someday you'll get to play in that game and see what it's like, but you'll probably have to find a way to beat GT to do that. :-) (13-2 in the last 15 years...)

MTSU - yeah, really not our finest hour, caused us to fire our DC. Have y'all cancelled the series with Duke and Wake yet, since you lost to both those powerhouses this season?

Smack talk aside, a co-championship is nothing to be ashamed of. GT is happy to claim a co-championship with FSU in 1998, and we're happy to claim a co-championship with UNC and Miami in 2012 (especially given what a poor season we had - we certainly weren't expecting to tie for the lead given how our year started). But claiming more than you actually earned is kind of embarassing.

Alright guys, leave the tech troll alone. He is showing classic signs of someone who is being consumed by the slow burning fire of jealousy. He's stuck with Paula Johnson while we have Coach Fedora. And unlike our wuffie neighbors, most tech fans have the intelligence to see the writing on the wall. Whatever time in the sun they had, their 15 minutes of fame, is over. There's a new sheriff in town.

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm actually looking forward to seeing Coach Fedora's version of payback on those teams that bested us this year. He's a very highly motivated individual. Don't bet against him!
