Imagine my surprise...(pic added)

Imagine my surprise...(pic added)

so the house in Manhattan Bch is being fumigated because of termites; gotta do it every 8 to 10 years...

and the local hostelry where we are staying for a few days has a complimentary breakfast room...

I'm over there getting something to eat around 7:15 a.m. this Saturday morning, while there are a handful of folks in the room, and a young man walks up wearing an NC fleece pullover...

so I say "Are you a UNC fan?"

and he replies "I play for them."

I look carefully at him and realize that it's Gio...

if I heard him correctly, he's out here working out at API, getting ready for the draft...

so I told him just how much my UNC family loved that punt return and he broke into a huge smile...

he really is a polite and well spoken young man in addition to being friendly toward total strangers...

this young man will do just fine in football, or anything else he chooses to try...

and a great ambassador for UNC...

My company has a plant in southern California and for some reason, I frequent the Brewco out there when I go. I have never seen Gio out there though. LOL.

That is a really nice part of the world. I would love to live there. You're pretty lucky.

Re: Imagine my surprise...

I didn't mention that there was another young man with him who had a mostly grey watch cap that said "STATE" on it so I tried to look horrified as I pointed it out, and while laughing, Gio said "Don't worry he's a Beaver, that's Oregon State."

we laughed, and he teased me that I was wearing a red sweat shirt at the time...

I explained my son attends SDSU...

the other young man with Gio was just a little bit smaller than he was, and IIRC his brother played for OSU, but I never thought to ask if they were related...

there was also an extremely attractive and well put together young woman (and that's putting it mildly), with them, and another young woman who had her back to me getting breakfast when I spotted her, so I can't vouch for the front, but seen from the back, odds are she's hot too...

if I happen to see him again I will ask if it's his bro...

The real question is how you didn't recognize Gio right away!

RE: Imagine my surprise...

hey, it was 7:15 on a Saturday morning and I had not had my coffee yet...

but, yeah, at first I felt a little silly about it, myself...

no problem, he has excellent social skills and put me at ease almost immediately...

just a genuinely nice kid...

Flew him out on the jet, offer my house which is empty for next several weeks while we spend some time in Hawaii watching the PGA tour.

Re: Imagine my surprise...

Earl:

I only lived in Chapel Hill during those years in which I attended UNC in the 60s and 80s...

have been back for many football games over the years but have not lived there since I got my undergraduate degree, in 1984...

used to live in the Mojave Desert here in CA, hence the nom de plume, which I am too lazy to change...

resided for a year or two in Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico...

now in Manhattan Bch, CA but when I do retire I intend to move much farther South...

Re: Imagine my surprise...

I recalled the origin of your handle when a group of Heel fans used to meet at the Barbeque Joint. You were always impressive with what you had to say. I trust with the acception of your beach home all is going well.

I have been sidelined with battles against advanced prosate cancer and phripheral neuropathy. Under the circumstances things are going well.

I have always enjoyed your posts as well...

we old-timers have to stick together...

BTW, Gio's brother was kind enough to snap a photo of the two of us and if someone knows how to post a pic or create a link that will let me display a photo I will try to put it up...

Edit: I meant to add that I hope your battle is going well, I saw that Stuart Scott is trading punches with the big C, as he just revealed on Twitter...

I have faith you both will prevail...

Go Tar Heels!

Great kid.
Everything I hear is that he will be trading in that Blue Fleece for a Green one.
He is 90% NY Jets bound unless some other team reaches high into 1st round to grab him.

Yep. Same kinda thing at SP Mall in Durham. The great ambassador thing is spot on. It seems as though somebody raised that young man right.
