Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
Looking at the depth chart for 2014, replacing Bart for Monte Taylor, northcarolina.scout.com/3/recruitingboard.htmlit seems we are crazy-deep at DE as well as Bandit. I understand the need to get another stud DE for a few reasons: a) in case Drennon is more bandit-like, b) in case Tyler Alberts doesn't help at all if Kareem Martin gets hurt etc. c) in case Drennon or Jessie Rogers goes awry for some reason But on paper, Bart doesn't look like a stud DE. People mention has ability to move over to Bandit, but we already have a crap-load of dudes who could probably play Bandit. Right? Are coaches seeing glaring weaknesses in personnel at Bandit? Or is Bart just insurance in case Lawson doesn't commit? If Lawson does commit, will Bart move to TE instead of bandit? Idle minds would like to know.

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
Lots of questions there.
I think if Lawson were to commit Bart could be an undersized DE, or vice versa. Both guys are roughly 6'3 250, so they could interchange (in theory, anyway) positions.
I think Bandit without question is a weak spot on this roster, despite the depth. Same with Ram. Those positions require a specific skill set, and getting players to fit that is challenging. Dion Guy did the best he could, and Rashad has been a pleasant surprise there although I'm inclined to believe his long-term position is at WLB, so getting guys like Bart and possibly Lawson in there gives the position (presumably) more immediate help.
Bart is not insurance in case Lawson doesn't commit. He replaces the scholarship lost by Taylor going to JUCO.

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
depth is meaningless if none are difference makers.
Always good to have options and development big bodied kids at DE/TE because some DE will out grow it into a DT. Some other one will get hurt or drop out. Makes a lot of sense since the new commit can play either side of the ball.

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
Bandit and Ram are the lynch pins of this D. The staff has said that filling those positions with exactly the right guys is essential to the D maximizing its potential. --------------------------------------------- --- NCU08 wrote:

In his video, he makes plays. He was a 3* and Taylor was a 2*. I don't know how that will translate to college, time will tell.

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
Don't sell a kid short that may be a step slow and a few pounds lighter than 5* studs but has a 6* heart.
Depth is crucial for success defense anyway with an offensive scheme like ours. Our guys by default are going to be playing on average 10-15 more plays a game than most other teams. Gotta be able to rotate with quality depth to keep people fresh for the 4th quarter and to keep players from getting overuse injuries.

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
So the common argument is that depth is a good thing, but the depth questions at safety/RAM look bigger than those at de/bandit. Maybe the coaches feel differently, and that is partly why I asked.

We have 3 safeties committed right now so I think depth will be alright back there, plus we also had several guys redshirt this year from the past class at safety.

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
No inside information, but I bet the staff anticipates and that we will see attrition at the DE and B spots over the next 15 months. We have not recruited particularly well at DE for a couple of years (until this year), and the Bandit position seems to be something of a miscellaneous pile right now. Bet one of Lipford or Otis ends up back at LB as well. Kind of cruel but to get to 20 spots next year we are going to have to lose some players. I suspect spring and summer practice will let people know where they stand in the pecking order. Some will leave. --------------------------------------------- --- gregh1 wrote:

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
Most college ready defender we've signed! What a player. If you haven't seen his tape you might underestimate him. Quite a program he comes from. He and Nathan Staub. Great technique. If he stays at bandit size he will be big-time! If not, should be a heck of a DE.

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
This. From what I've heard about this kid he is a leader and has great character we need a player like this. Vic and Deke love this kid and really wanted him. He was just a day late and a dollar short on commuting Drennon & Hayes beat him to the punch. He will not play any bandit it's either end or if he grows a 3 technique.

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
Rashad played well at Bandit, but I believe we will be much better at the position if one of them can get up to 250-260lbs. and maintain good speed like around 4.6 - 4.7 that would be of great help against the run!!!!!

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
Just watched a game of 5 stars vs. guys who were a little slower and lighter but had 6-star hearts. The five stars wore crimson and the game was over about halfway through the 1st quarter.

Watch the video - U won't sweat him after that - very impressive - UNC got lucky
To paraphase the Rolling Stones - U might not get what U want but U might get what U need

Re: Bart, Bandits and TE recruiting
From the video:
A beat slower reacting to the snap than his D-line teammates. Good straight line closing speed. Sheds blockers, keeps leverage. Good tackler. Change of direction in space less than desirable (based on TE play).
Concerned about playing D in space as a Bandit and speed off the edge as DE. Could be a monster special teams player while he matures as a position player..
