Summers and Taylor.........................

Summers and Taylor.........................

Probably never be Tar Heels.

Re: Summers and Taylor.........................

Never let a good football player go to waste.

Really though, I hope these guys can get their grades/test scores up in order to qualify for D-I. An athletic scholarship is sometimes the surest way to end a bad cycle in some kids' lives and I feel confident that if these guys can get on campus and graduate they will be better men for it, regardless of how many snaps they see.

Taylor? He's still listed as a commit on the recruiting board.

Summers will probably never be heard from again.

Re: Summers and Taylor.........................

I don't have access to the premium board, but I do know people close to the James Summers situation.

James will be at Hines Jr. College through the 2013-2014 school year and plans to enroll at UNC fall 2014. He loves Carolina and his family very much wants to watch him play in Chapel Hill. He should have no trouble qualifying after taking the JUCO route.

Summers has NFL potential as a safety and those who are posting he will never enroll at UNC are engaging in speculation without knowledge of the circumstances in this instance.

Don't be so quick to give up on a young man who now knows what it takes to succeed academically and in life.

TheMule64... Very good post. I like James' future and hopefully he will be wearing Carolina Blue in the near future.

We don't take very many JUCOs, so I think that is a bit of an overstatement.

That's where I was going with my comment. I can name probably 10 UNC pledges that went to JUCO and were never seen again. I can only think of 1 or 2 that actually made it here.

Good luck to him and I hope it all ends up at Kenan.

Not sure why we seem to always read things like "a young man who NOW knows....." about kids who fail to qualify. You'd think solid HS football programs would be all over grades and the necessary steps to qualify for these college material kids as soon as possible. Perhaps a lot of them don't want to know until it's too late.

Re: Summers and Taylor.........................

GIven UNC's track record with JUCO qualifiers over the years, it certainly hasn't been kind.

That said, Summers and Taylor are terrific athletes and would be welcomed if the grades followed. Here's to hoping both individuals get the marks they need and put in the work to achieve their goal of becoming Tar Heels.

Re: Summers and Taylor.........................

But we HAVE taken juco kids in the past that hadn't committed to us in HS. Sly Williams and Jordan Nix come to mind -- also Terrence Brown came via the juco route and none were recruited by Carolina in HS.

These kids deserve much more than this from fans of the Heels. Nothing like a kid overcoming adversity to find some success. I am pulling hard for James and Monte to achieve their dreams. If they want to wear Carolina Blue, then they can. No matter what bart and others might say.

RE: Summers and Taylor.........................

I pray for God's best for them, whatever that may be. There are lots of different reasons HS student-athletes don't get the scholarship offers they've dreamed of: some are an inch too short, or 20 points low on the SAT, or a tick too slow in the 40, while others are simply guilty of playing at a small, rural high school or for an apathetic HS coach who doesn't "market" them. Others had major family issues such as divorce or foreclosure during their senior year, while others just got complacent academically.

I've worked with quite a few of these guys over the years as a teacher and a counselor at the college level. Some go to JuCo and get serious with academics and athletics. Some prep. Others go to D3 and stay to play there, some transfer up from there. Others walk on at D2 and D1 schools and earn their scholarships the hard way, or at least get to play. And unfortunately, some simply wash out. Hopefully we'll see Summers and Taylor in Carolina Blue down the road.

I support this post. Hope he gets his academics in order and comes to UNC to get his degree and make big contributions on the field.
Good luck to him.

I really don't understand why some of you guys are getting so offended. Nobody is saying these guys are dumb. Nobody is saying these guys aren't good football players. Nobody is saying these guys are "bad eggs." All some of us are saying is we rarely see guys who commit -- go to a JUCO -- and then return to UNC. Craddock, Ray Ray Davis and Hawatha Bell come to mind and I didn't even put any thought into it. I'm sure there are plenty more. How many guys committed to UNC, went to a JUCO and then returned to UNC to finish their career? I can't think of any at the moment.

Re: Summers and Taylor.........................

Ideally, you would think that is the case; however, high school coaches are all about W's and L's. And, it does fall all on the coaches. The kids take the blame as well. Usually, they are given things and feel like they don't have to work for anything. You would be amazed at how HS coaches treat some players.

Ghost, doesm't surprise me that you take this angle. No one is offended, we just care about the kids because they selected UNC for their football home. They may or may not make it back to Chapel Hill. That is not up to me or you. Hope they have what it takes. Yo are so obvious that it is frightening.

One door closes and another opens. I wish both these kids luck but we might actually add a couple of kids rated higher in their spots. That isn't a knock on either kid. It's just the reality of the situation.

Re: Summers and Taylor.........................

My daughter is an aspiring athlete for college.. Her freshman year starts next fall.. I mean this as no slight to these two kids but I swear that every year I am amazed at kids that can't make good enough scores or grades to get into college.

Our schools are failing these kids. I know that parents are too, because many times there are no parents involved. My wife is one serious nag when it comes to grades and I am glad that she stays on top of the homework situation. One day my daughter will appreciate it I hope.

Re: Summers and Taylor.........................

It's the new and supposedly improved, PC world we live in.

There are no winners or losers. Only participants.

We're no longer freshmen, sophomores, etc, we're first and second year.

The SAT is biased towards too many groups so it shouldn't be used.

We have decided over the years that we need to make everyone feel good about themselves even if perhaps they shouldn't feel that way. We need them to feel successful even if they really aren't. Hard work has been replaced with pampering, stroking and telling people what they want to hear, for fear that we might be accused of intolerance or cultural insensitivity. IOW, we expect and demand way too little from high school kids and that's exactly what we get.
