Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
Brian Kelly just lost to Alabama in embarrassing form on National Television (42-14). He said before the game was played that he's not going to the NFL or interested in the NFL. Yet, he interviewed for the Eagles job and there's rumors that the Bears are interested in his services also.
1. Does he know something about his team next year that we don't know? 2. Is he looking for a pay raise? 3. Does he feel like, if he doesn't do well next year, that they will get rid of him like they did Tyrone Willingham? 4. Does he want to really go to the NFL? 5. What message did he pass along to his current players and #1 recruiting class he has coming in?

RE: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
BK is and always has been about himself. He may not leave ND this year but, those domers that think he's going to be a long term coach at ND will be sadly mistaken. They need to prepare themselves to deal with this stuff on an annual basis until he does bolt South Bend.

RE: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
This separates him from exactly zero other big time coaches.

RE: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
insider.espn.go.com/insider/features/rumorsWhat happens if the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lose head coach Brian Kelly to the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles? Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports doesn't mince words about what bad news this would be for the program. "For Notre Dame this is a gut-punch," Wetzel writes. "The Irish have suffered through nearly two decades of poor to average coaches while a perception was built that the school could never again be nationally relevant due to strict academics, location, a lack of conference affiliation and a host of other items. "Then when Notre Dame finally gets a capable coach who quickly proves none of that is true, who restores a measure of glory and has the program primed for even more, it might lose him? "That quickly? And to the Eagles?" Wetzel also dismisses the idea that Kelly would use his negotiations with the Eagles as leverage for a better contract with the Irish, saying that after Notre Dame reached the national championship game, he was likely in line for a big raise anyway. "He was already in the perfect position," Wetzel writes. "He restored Notre Dame, bringing joy to one of the wealthiest alumni bases in major college football. He'd earned his raise. "No, the interest in the NFL is real. It's always been real, the ultimate spot for an upwardly mobile coach." - Vince Verhei

RE: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
insider.espn.go.com/insider/features/rumorsWhile the Philadelphia Eagles (and others) were targeting Oregon HC Chip Kelly as their next HC, there was no shortage of people who got confused and thought they were going after Notre Dame's HC, who shares the same last name. As of Wednesday night, these confused people are correct, if in delayed fashion. ESPN NFL Insiders Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen report that the Eagles interviewed Brian Kelly Tuesday night, and that there was mutual interest after the talks. Kelly is now out of the country, but it's expected that the process could continue as soon as this weekend. Kelly would certainly fit the narrative that the Eagles are hoping to land a big name for their HC opening, and he's steadily climbed the coaching ranks in recent seasons. His job in refurbishing the program at Notre Dame has been astonishingly quick, and for a team with as many perceived needs as Philadelphia, a similar turnaround would be remarkable. Stay tuned. - Tim Kavanagh Dan Graziano Another Kelly on Eagles' radar "The interesting new name that came up overnight in the Eagles' search for a head coach is that of Notre Dame's Brian Kelly, who's on vacation right now in the wake of his BCS title game loss but has spoken with the Eagles and plans to again. Me, personally, having watched the game, I'd have gone after Nick Saban. But different strokes and all that."

Re: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
Regardless of Brian Kelly's reasons for interviewing for the Eagles job, I hope he leaves Notre Dame both "high and dry"! Not much love for the Dommers since they fired Tyrone Willingham with a winning record!

That seems to be his MO so, I wouldn't be surprised if he did that. Maybe not this go around but, soon.

Re: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
Brian Kelly is only gauging his market value as a head coach. His agent will take this info back to ND for a hefty pay increase. He's not leaving ND at this time.

Re: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
Of course he said that before the game, probably answering a direct question from someone (I'm guessing here). Do you think he should have, prior to the game, said he might be looking at the NFL?

Re: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
Coaches continue to leverage other vacant positions as possibilities to get larger extensions from their current institutions. Notre Dame's Brian Kelly appears to be the latest case (unless you believe he'll leave for the NFL ranks). Notre Dame is stuck between a rock and a hard place. The Fighting Irish will almost certainly have to open up the purse strings or suffer perception problems. "Notre Dame is Notre Dame, but coaches want to be paid," Pete Fuitak of CollegeFootballNews.com wrote. "If the school doesn't play the game and give Kelly more money, it might be seen as cheap and it might have a harder time the next time it has to find a head man -- if Kelly isn't getting an extension after resurrecting the Irish, then the next guy will wonder what's in it for him if he succeeds." It's a vicious cycle every coach and institution plays. Kelly may have legitimate interest in the NFL, but Notre Dame has to do everything it can to keep its current coach in place. - Brent Sobleski insider.espn.go.com/insider/features/rumors

Re: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
As the offseason began, it seemed like the Browns -- led by Joe Banner -- and the Eagles -- led by Jeffrey Lurie -- would be squaring off for HC candidates. As it turned out, there was really only one man that both of them badly wanted, Oregon HC Chip Kelly, because once Kelly elected to return to the collegiate ranks, the two clubs went in separate directions.
Cleveland found their man late on Thursday, and on Friday, Rob Chudzinski was announced as the newest Browns HC. Will that have any effect on the Eagles' hunt? That's not believed to be the case: neither Chud nor Norv Turner -- who he's targeted as his OC -- have been linked to the opening in Philly. So what's going on with the other candidates?
Our NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported Thursday afternoon that the Eagles' interest in Brian Kelly is legitimate, and vice versa; speculation that Kelly was doing this just to get a raise from Notre Dame is off-base, per Schefter's sources. As for the others, we know that the Eagles have also interviewed Broncos OC Mike McCoy, Falcons DC Mike Nolan and special teams coach Keith Armstrong and former Bears HC Lovie Smith. They also have interest in Seahawks DC Gus Bradley, Colts OC Bruce Arians and Bengals OC Jay Gruden, though dates for those interviews have not been confirmed.
Whether the Eagles' next coach will come from that pool of candidates remains to be seen, and there's no pressing timeline for a hire, either. Things could move more quickly if McCoy and the Broncos are eliminated this weekend, but that's just one factor.

Re: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
I don't really understand the fascination with the NFL. College coach seems like a better gig to me (at least if you're in the $3-5 million club).
I guess the NFL is more about gameday coaching and college is more about recruiting... so you can prove your mettle. I'd rather win a bunch of games, make a bunch of money, not worry about my job, be treated like royalty (I guess this happens to a degree in the NFL as well, but not like at Bama or OSU etc. except in rare situations) and make a positive impact on a lot of kids lives.
I have a feeling Saban will head back to the niffle in a year or so and I'll wonder why.

More money. More 'football x's & o's', less recruiting, schmoozing with boosters/etc. Coaching at the highest level.
I can see the fascination for sure. Of course, there's also nothing wrong with the college gig especially if you want shape young men's lives/etc. They are different jobs...with plusses & minuses to both.

Re: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
This. And it's generally lots more money than college. But you go into it knowing the possibility of getting fired is much higher than in college, and it's much more of a grind.

Re: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
In Kelly's defense a little bit, every halfway decent coach gets ask all the time some question like, "are you interest in the job at _______?" or "are you a candidate for _______________?" If you think about it, that is a question they cannot answer honestly. If they aren't interested they still get asked it every other day, and if they are they sure can't say they are. Do you really expect him to say that he's planning on interviewing for another job? How many of us publicize that we are looking for another job, while we already have one??

Kelly is staying put at ND.
I wonder if he'll be getting just a little raise for his 'loyalty'.

RE: Brian Kelly (ND, Eagles, Bears)
It's about leverage. Kelly understands he's hot right now. He simply used the situation for a pay raise. He knows he is only a couple of bad seasons or one unfortunate slip up of a 18 year old kid from being out of work. Mission accomplished.
