Tajh Boyd's return validates Tigers' title talk

Tajh Boyd's return validates Tigers' title talk

Clemson has its quarterback -- and the ACC has a legitimate Heisman candidate and national title contender -- for 2013.

Tajh Boyd’s announcement Wednesday afternoon that he has decided to stay for his fifth and final season in Death Valley was an instant validation of Clemson’s hopes for a national championship season this coming fall. Boyd should be the best quarterback returning in the ACC this season and one of the best in the country. He was good enough this past season to be a Heisman finalist (though he wasn't), and most importantly, his experience and leadership will be priceless to a program looking for something more than a second ACC title in three seasons.

When asked on Wednesday afternoon if his decision to return was more financially- or legacy-driven, Boyd responded with an answer that defines him as a leader:

“I think more team-driven,” he said, “honestly.

Opens against Georgia next year. Should be a top 10 matchup

He may be the best "dual threat" QB returning, but I'd take Bryn over him any day. He's still mistake prone.

There will be no national title for Clemson next year or no state title for that matter. South Carolina manhandles them now and next year shouldn't be any different.

Clempson is definitely a threat to win the title. ACC, that is. They aren't within sniffing distance of a national title.

He would be the hands down #1 QB picked in this years draft, unless there's a scout out there who thinks Glennon is better ;>). What does he have to gain by coming back?

Does Tajh Boyd's Heisman talk helps the ACC at all?

If this proves to be true, it would be the ACC's first national title contender in over a decade.

With their schedule, I have my doubts. Playing Georgia & S Carolina in the non-conference is pretty tough.

Depending on how good FSU's back up quarterback is they will be tough to beat in the ACC next year.

Is it still that real skinny kid with the John Holmes 'stache whose dad was the OC? He played as a true frosh when Manuel was injured, much more of a pocket guy.

I'm not sure who they have as a back up but I heard the announcers talking about him in the bowl game. They said the coaches were excited about whoever it is.

Clemson has to ranked in the top ten first. The early preseason rankings by the major polls don't have them there from what I saw. It's a definite top fifteen match up, though.

Clemson finsihed in #9 in the coaches' poll in 2012. If it is not a Top 10 matchup it will because UGA is not in Top 10.

Considering Georgia finished at #4 in the coaches' poll in 2012, this is 'interesting Clemson fan logic' to say the least...

well they do lose 10 starters on D...but I am sure you knew that. And I was actually TIC with comment. Both teams will be well inside the Top 10 to start the season.

I said "should be". BTW no "major poll" has come out with a 2013-2014 pre-season poll for football unless you count the bleacher report as a legitimate news source.

I don't get why so many people are acting like there is no chance for them to make it to the National Championship. They are very talented. They play in the ACC. Yes they have two big matchups with SEC top 10 teams next year but even if they lose to UGA that is the first week of the season. I think they are hands down the best team in the ACC.

Best team in ACC means Orange bowl game against the Big East or a mid major.

I don't read Bleacher Report. Yes, the actual preseason polls are a ways off. However, I really was referring to the early preseason rankings by ESPN and USA Today, not actual official polls. Clemson will probably make some top tens, but there is some big questions to be answered about their defense

With regards to your last sentence...when was the last time someone who played in the ACC was even close to winning a National Championship?

Clemson should worry about winning their state championship before they start thinking national championship.

CU will be very good. But hands down the best in the ACC might be a stretch. FSU will be plenty good also. And ya'll should compete. VT will not be bad either.

Won't have to worry about UNC, VT or Miami until ACCCG. The game vs FSU is in clemson. Very favorable schedule for the Tigers.

RE: Tajh Boyd's return validates Tigers' title talk

National Championship isn't really worth talking about at this stage. On the other hand, if we WERE to go undefeated, there would definitely not be any talk about "weak schedule" keeping us out of it. OOC games against Georgia and South Carolina, home against Florida State and ACC CG against whoever emerges in the Coastal.

I'm not predicting our record, just noting that the schedule is plenty tough.

We lost Nuk Hopkins to the draft, though. That's a real shame. Hurts now that North dropped us from consideration.

If Clemson runs the table and that will be tough they could play for a NC. They may be able to recover with one loss if it happens at the beginning of the year and it is to UGA.

They're a legitimate title threat - to win the Atlantic Division. I hope we win our division and "Go Coastal" on them in the ACCCG.
