So why did McCrory say the Martin Report troubled him ?

Why doesn't McCrory come out and defend a fellow republican governor's honor and integrity ?

Whether the "Pope" thing is contrived will be determined when the next budget is published. My guess is that the citizens of Charlotte will be asking themselves, "Is this the same guy I voted for to be my mayor?"

McCrory is a slimy career politician that will do or say anything depending on how the wind blows. He only mentioned the Martin report because it was the flavor of the day at the time. Get used to this its how he rolls. Anyone that lived in Charlotte during his term as mayor know exactly what he is all about.

Martin in Attack Mode

I lived in Charlotte during all of McCrory's SEVEN (count 'em, with a Dem majority) terms and never found him--or remember even the most bitter Dems or Observer--accuse him of slime or anything of the sort. In fact, he was as I described him--honest and independent. The Pope thing is contrived--the latest of the inevitable, incessant baseless smears--and there is ZERO evidence Pope is or ever will be calling shots. A "guess" is just what the slimy charge is. Martin has always been seen and admired as above reproach.

RE: Martin in Attack Mode

First off, McCrory did not criticize Jim Martin or the Martin Report. He said he was concerned at the findings and what was going on at taxpayer expense [in the department of AFRI/AFAM]. People are taking his comments out of context. His twitter feed said this:

"“Just reviewed Martin report & results are troubling. It’s not just academic fraud but fraud against the public. It can’t be tolerated. We must ensure future admins & their boards are held accountable & students are getting a sound education while protecting NC tax.”

That's not a criticism of Martin -- it's a criticism of what the report found re: AFRI/AFAM.

Re McCrory, he tried to pile on again this week with an awkward press conference joke about how many people in the area were doing nothing such as "NC State football coaches and UNC professors."

Why would he say something like that? Not funny or very smart.

^I'm guessing hubris. After running for governor for 8 years and finally winning in addition to having a GOP legislature, he believes he can do and say whatever he wants. Let's just say his antics so far are not thrilling the local folks. So, we'll see what happens next.

In regards to

Mark Twain says “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

This is a great thread so please don't turn it into a political discussion.

you can almost see Mark Twain looking at a copy of the N & O as he penned that second line...

Jim Martin was simply reminding them of their "excellent" history...

The paragraph in the IC article I like the most is this:

Forbes.com has since pulled the story. When asked about his article being removed from the website, Heitner offered the following explanation on his Twitter account: “I pulled it myself. Didn’t think the article represented the quality of work my readers should demand of me.”

If only the N&O and its writers had as much integrity to admit their failures.

as a practical matter, doesn't it look even worse for the N&O that an independent third party has now had to admit their failures for them...

Heitner may never have intended to be UNC's ally, but he has certainly drawn attention to the Raleigh Rag's failures...

"Thank you for offering your suspicions so that I might respond. That is a strength of our society." - Governor Martin

Without the second sentence, the first stands as a prime example of devastating sarcasm, aimed at N&O and their ilk! I love it!

Re: Martin in Attack Mode

The N&O doesn't care about their failures. In fact, they're counting on them. Does anyone really believe that the N&O doesn't know that a majority of the crap they have presented is inaccurate. They are fully aware of it. Their efforts on this story were never about the truth or getting to the bottom of anything. It was self promotion based on sensationalism, half truths, rehashing of old material and playing on the emotions of an obsessed fan base.

The N&O was after sales so they carefully picked a target and launched a strategic attack. The target could have been anyone or anything and the truth simply didn't matter.

I compare the N&O to those who create elaborate Ponzi schemes. The goal is to promote themselves through misleading info and deceit while exhibiting a total disregard for those that are harmed along the way. There is very little integrity among the people that work at the N&O and the sooner we realize that the better off we'll be. Know the enemy and treat them as such.
