Martin in Attack Mode

Martin in Attack Mode

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Since delivering his Academic Anomalies Review to the UNC Board of Trustees on Dec. 20, former N.C. Governor Jim Martin has been proactive in addressing criticism and correcting mistruths by media outlets and the general public surrounding his findings.

Not hard to accomplish, since N&O has zero. I wish UNC's administrative would go on the offensive as well as Martin does, maybe this mess would be over with by now if they had any backbone.

I would think that the new governor and Pat McCrory would issue a statement of support for Governor Martin, a statement of condemnation for the media attacks on Governor Martin's integrity, and a call for the witch hunts to come to an end.

Such a shame that Governor Martin has to fight UNC's battles. Why is UNC not out there being proactive and refuting this BS?

The new Governor IS Pat McCrory, and I agree with you. But, McCrory is a politician so he will be too afraid to **** off a group of people who number in large enough quantities and have hate beyond measure that would hurt his chances for re-election.

And I echo the thoughts of others. Thank you Martin for standing up, and thank you to all the idiots who were dumb enough to attack him so he would have to stand up for himself and do what Carolina has not been in solid enough position to be able to do.

that, of course, is not part of what he was brought in to do...

and were he to take it upon himself to do that the sleazy ABCers would seize upon it to claim that it reflected that he was not objective and must have had an agenda while doing his review...

still, he would be the right man for the job and just watching him slap these lying bastages back down you wish the PTB in South Building had one-tenth the backbone he has shown these last few weeks...

if it is so obvious to us then why can't...?

Re: Martin in Attack Mode

Because an independent investigation was the only way to deal with this issue. If UNC had spent lots of time defending itself, the ABCers wouldn't believe it and they'd probably muck it up anyway.

Now it's time for the N&O to take a long hard look at itself and remember what it means to be the Fourth Estate. The witch hunt needs to stop.

And it's also time for UNC to take honest and deep actions to deal with it's academic standards and reputation. I've been disgusted and even somewhat ashamed of this.

No. Why would you say that?

People spreading lies about UNC (lkie Kane saying that the independent studies were not looked into in 2002 when the minutes say they were) and UNC does not step up and refute it? Instead we have to have a plus 70 year old guy do our heavy lifting. Why do you not find that disappointing?

The 2002 minutes do not lie. Kane was objectively wrong and UNC did nothing to point that out.

Maybe he said that because Martin truely isn't "fighting unc's battles." Martin is defending his independent review of unc. It being positive for unc just happens to be part of the situation. He isn't doin anything but defending his own work.

RE: Martin in Attack Mode

Agreed. My guess is that Martin doesn't have a staff of PR folks behind him. If he did, they'd all probably tell him to shrug the criticism off and take a vacation for a few weeks until people lose interest. Of course, that approach always fuels skepticism, which unfortunately is in ample supply in Raleigh. (Interesting how disconnectedness from reality creates so many skeptics...)

I applaud the guy for taking it right back to each of the hacks posing as "journalists" who've tried to mask their own incompetence (or greed for selling stories) by flinging the mud they themselves are covered in. It doesn't follow modern PR protocol, and I think that confuses these nitwits to no end. His hyperbole is sailing way over their heads, too, which is just an added bonus in this whole circus.

RE: Martin in Attack Mode

Martin is a Davidson College guy through and through, which means he prides himself on his honesty, rigorous analysis and hard work. It also means that he is no lap dog for UNC. It does not surprise me that he defends his honor so zealously and holds such a dim view of the N&O's dishonest, vindictive and intellectually suspect work these days.

Re: Martin in Attack Mode

But since the Dr. Mandel's erroneous statement impugned both the Governor's findings and the actions of Dr. Mandel's own UNC committee, the two are inextricably linked. Just as Governor Martin's correction of Dr. Mandel defends the University as well as his own work, if the University had taken the time to correct Dr. Mandel's libel, they would have also been defending the Governor's findings. The relationship between the two situations is not happenstance.

The NCAA plans to move to Raleigh as pecker head pride is the "deep throat" for Kane and all of his misinformation. The NCAA is getting ready to hammer state college. Libel and slander. Death Penalty on the way.

The National Enquirer has decided to buy the N$O and pecker-head pride and take the monetary loss associated with losers.

While his responses to the criticism have already been posted here on IC, I still loved seeing the article. Jim Martin is an honorable man and those that seek to discredit him have no morals and are only interested in furthering their own agendas. Good for him...and us.

The University has not been able to "fight a battle" without appearing to be in denial or unrepentant. Having an independent public figure with his own gravitas conduct an independent investigation and then defend attacks there on coolly, rationally and with facts is a million times better.

When a guy lake Kane makes an objectively wrong statement of fact then it does not appear like we are in denial. We are simply setting the record straight. I don't think we should respond to Kane's opinions, but when he is just plain wrong on a fact, it needs to be corrected. We cant let him spread lies unchallenged.

BTW, only the ABC crowd will feel we are in denial. Those who support UNC or even neutral parties who may be swayed by Kane's lines need to hear the truth. I am not trying to convince the ABCers we are clean: won;t ever happen. I just want the general public to have the correct facts.

Exactly. Martin's independence was a huge difference maker. No one would be turning the questions back on on the N & O if UNC had kept it internal.

McCrory and Martin are both honest, independent men who think for themselves, don't take guff, and have no ties to Carolina. Martin's age is a positive, and the "Pope" thing is the current contrived, organized attempt to smear before the scintilla of fact.

Martin is a perfect guy for this. He doesn't have connections to UNC. That's big, because so many leaders in the state have connections to either UNC or State College. He's got serious academic credentials as a former professor at Davidson. As a two term former governor from a couple of decades ago he is due a certain amount of respect that rises above stupid partisanship. He's not going to like having a hard-earned reputation sullied by hack nimrods like Dan Kane, and neither would I.
