So rev and the Mrs. go to the islands for New Year's, and have lots of informal conversations with other cruisers wearing the garb of their favorite schools. Of course, unless these people are AD's or on the BOT, it doesn't matter too much, but I like to keep my finger on the pulse of the fan bases. Here's what I found...

*FSU: The folks I met were all very pro-ACC, and seemed highly pleased that I sat and watched the game with them wearing heavenly blue and yelling "Go Noles!" These guys said NOTHING about the SEC, Big 10 or Big 12. The same dudes pulled for Clemson and Louisville loudly, as well.

*Miss. State: Said they'd heard that NCeSt and VT were the targets of the SEC. Since there were several of them and one of me, I didn't blow them out with the aggie-tech school lecture, but I did point out that the SEC allegedly wanted flagship schools, preferably with stronger academics. They didn't grasp the concept of a flagship school. Figures...

*Auburn: Plainly said "We want Carolina in the SEC, period!" Smarter than the other SEC guys I met, the Auburn folks were not only aware of our large fan base, heavily populated state, and great sports tradition, but also our superior academics. Interestingly, these Auburn guys were also in tune with UVA. While impressed with Clemson's win over LSU and their "football culture," they were also savvy enough to realize SCar nor UGA wanted no part of them in the SEC.

*Bama: Too drunk to carry on coherent conversation.

*Florida: See Bama comments.

*USF: "We're still waiting on an invite from the SEC or ACC." A direct quote.

*SCar: One guy, an accomplished young body builder who looked like he should have been on the field, sat in the casino smoking like a freight train and drinking like a fish while his Gamecocks held off Michigan. The other SCar fan I met had on a Gamecock cap and a Rutgers t-shirt. Rutgers? I told him to beware, that the real Carolina was invading Columbia next August. He seemed baffled.

*UCF: "We have a really big school!"

*UGA: "We should be playing in the title game." Oh, and "Thanks for the freshman running backs." Yo' mama.

*Illinois: "We don't want you in the Big 10 anyway." I bet you don't.

*Michigan State: I just smiled at these people wearing my Tar Heel stuff. They looked at me in awe like Hansbrough in the hall.

*Ohio State: "Are you serious? The Big 10 is courting you guys? Why?" smh

*K-State: Watching the bowl game on TV in the bar, staying til the bitter end, weeping.

*dook: Just a couple, and based on appearance (smug, smarmy, giving off a vibe of superiority and arrogance) they were alums, not Walmarters. I didn't even speak to them.

*NCeSt: On the elevator, picking his nose and scratching himself. You can't make this stuff up.

But to be fair to the NCSU guy, did he let you off at the right floor whilst performing his Elevator Operator duties?

BTW, everything in this poast is based on actual conversations I had while on vacation. I really didn't make this stuff up. The FSU fans were cordial, the Auburn fans knowledgeable, and the dookies were, well, dookies.
