Not sure what the Bills are thinking.

It's too bad SU lost him. He really turned that program around. Syracuse is a hard place to recruit football players to. The city is dying and the weather is terrible.

Re: Bills Hire Syracuse HC

This might be the biggest hire in Syracuse football history. They have a lot of momentum, are getting ready to make in 2013 about double what they were previously making from their media deal, BC is down and UConn is on the verge of being left behind in the world of college football. As hard as it might be to recruit in the northeast, conditions are right for them to recruit that area as well as they ever have. Bring in the right guy, and I think Syracuse can continue this run and maybe do something special in the ACC.

This sucks for Syracuse. Marrone was a 'Cuse alum, too, IIRC. They finished 2012 strong, and, had good momentum going into 2013. They need a really good hire now to keep all of that going.

Marrone is a hell of a coach and numerous NFL teams wanted him. It isn't just the Bills

Think back to just how AWFUL Syracuse football was when Marrone got there. They were trending upward with this HC and his staff. Now, they're in limbo again. That has to be frustrating for their fans.

Not sure what Marrone is thinking.

He'd have had multiple offers from the NFL. Solid coach, going to a pretty terrible situation.

Don't forget we was the Offensive Coordinator for the New Orleans Saints from 2006 through 2008. He has NFL pedigree already.

With the firing of seven (7) NFL Head Coaches, I was wondering when or if the current and near future ACC teams would lose their coaches to the NFL. Hopefully, the casualties will be minimized to Syracuse.

Re: Bills Hire Syracuse HC

Bad, though the decline slowed a lot in the most recent census.

Upstate NY in general has been hard hit since the 50's. The inner city has lost a lot of people, but the Syracuse metro area (about 650K) has held steady or grown slightly. The Rochester area is doing okay too.

Other areas of upstate NY are worse. Utica is completely stagnant. Buffalo's metro area has shrunk by 200,000 people since 1970. It's gotten to the point where the Rochester metro area may be bigger in the next few decades.

It's very tight lipped at the moment and everyone is throwing up names to see who sticks. Pete Thamel from SI mentioning Dave Clawson-Bowling Green HC, Bob Diaco-ND d-coordinator, or promotion of or D-coordinator Scott Shafer. Personally I'd like to see us swing for the fences and get Butch.

Re: Bills Hire Syracuse HC

They were awful the 4 years before he got there, but they were good under the coach before that (107-59), so it's not like Marrone was a miracle worker. And there wasn't really a positive trend -- 8-5 in 2010, then back down to 5-7 in 2011, then 8-5 this year

Very true. I should have been more clear about SU being awful with Greg Robinson as their HC.

Clawson could be a good hire. He had a good program going on at Richmond, before he left to be OC at Tennessee.

Butch could be good for you. He got us winning again, but, we paid a price for it. If you do hire him, be prepared to watch as conservative an offense as you could ever see.

You all have a good balance on offense at present, so, maybe giving your DC the job would be the best bet.

I'll check the board.

Wanny would awful there.

Major Applewhite had a cup of coffee there. So did Brian Polian IIRC. It'd be interesting to see a rill-rill young guy take that job.

This is the list of schools he beat this year. I think that is a solid list.

Makes perfect sense to add them to the ACC.

Re: Bills Hire Syracuse HC

I cheer for the Bills as my "other" football team, along with UNC.

At first, I was a little perturbed by the hire. Literally any other name would have had more cache with the media/public, and would have brought more attention to the Bills (something they DESPERATELY need). But the more I read on Marrone and what he's accomplished, the more I started to like the hire. Consider:

- He's from the state of NY, born in the Bronx.
- Went to Syracuse for college, played and coached football there.
- Spent 7 years in the NFL, including 4 as the OC for New Orleans under Sean Payton.
- Took Syracuse from a doormat to a BE contender (admittedly not hard to do in the league, but hard to do at a place like Syracuse that hasn't been traditionally good since Jim Brown...and yes, I remember the McNabb/Harrison/Freeney years).

He's not the flashiest guy, but a franchise like Buffalo doesn't need flashy - it needs RESULTS. If Marrone can bring that to WNY, then he'll be revered as a king; if not, he's just another in a long line of failures.
