Switzer
Caught a 3 yard game winning pass with 6 seconds to go in Semper Fi All American game. It was his only catch of the game, but clearly a competitor with the game on the line. Other thing that was impressive is that he was the punt returner. Never had a chance to return anything as the West punter was inconsistent, but impressive that he was selected as the punt returner with all of the great athletes that were playing for the East. Also gave a great interview. Looking forward to this kid in Chapel Hill.

They didn't punt to him because they'd seen the Gio return. Heck, even people on the West Coast watch it over and over again just to watch Gio's run, hear Angell's call, and stand amazed by the Gooberishness of the Wolpfack faithful.
Switzer's a good one. He'll shine in Chapel Hill.

I agree. I just hope he develops to a big-time player. I see him getting redshirted next year. He'll need a year to get use to playing with better athletes

Re: Switzer
After a week of practice, the coaching staff felt that he was the best option for punt returner and elected to have him on the field when the game was on the line. They obviously did not see him as a "boy among men". However, I am sure that your assessment is better than theirs. However, I agree that a redshirt year would help most of these young men including Switzer in adapting to the next level.

Re: Switzer
haha why do people act like I threatened their family when I give a negative opinion of a player. I'm not saying he's worthless, just that it will take time due to his size and EXTREME increase in competition. FWIW, there were people who coach or evaluate football for a living that felt the same way

Last comment, but your "boy among men" comment was way over the top. He looked like a boy among boys. Ever site has him rated either 3 or 4 stars so I don't see his situation being much different from the rest of the boys in that game.

Re: Switzer
Didn't see the game, but going from HS where you are the main target to college where there are multiple targets always takes time to transition in to. These games help with that.
Switzer is a helluva athlete, he's just not as big as others, but it's not always about size. He needs about ten more lbs of muscle to excel at the college level for the position he's going to play, but he'll be fine. There is a reason FSU was after him so hard.

Read it again. I was wondering why there is such hostility and anger over a negative evaluation of a player's readiness to excel as a freshman. People just take it too personally, imo.

Not every fast, short, white WR is wes welker. Let's let him develop without these ridiculous comparisons and expectations

Re: Switzer
There will be freshmen playing next season, some from necessity, some from being the better option.
Switzer and Kris Francis are probably more elusive in tight spaces than any current player. How that transfers to the offense will most likely determine their red-shirt status.

www.tarheeltimes.com/article45243.aspxHere is video of the game winning play. Only UNC football fans could have a commitment selected to an all star game, catch the game winning pass in that all star game and come away anything other than impressed. From all accounts Switzer is a terrific player and perfect for our style off offense. I can't wait to see him on the field for us.

Switzer has a ton of potential and did a great job to get selected to that game but that doesn't mean he was impressive during the game.

Well, they thought he matched up well enough to have him on the field on the last play with the game on the line.
Plus, he jumped to catch the ball and held on to it.
Not being a homer, but there are always games you don't get the looks. It all depends on how the defense plays you.

Listen, I know you don't always get the looks, especially in this type of game. But even aside from that altogether, I thought he got pushed around and looked physically overwhelmed at times and that was against high school kids still.
I think he will be a good player at UNC. I just don't think it will happen right away because of the size and competition increase. Is that really that bad?

RE: Switzer
Top prospects from Tuesday’s East practice at the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl workouts 247sports.com/Article/Semper-F...rformers-1092933. Ryan Switzer, WR, Charleston (W.V.) George Washington Switzer – a commit to North Carolina – was excelling in his typical role as a slot matchup nightmare. He worked the underneath zones to perfection and he was very difficult to defend in man coverage. Switzer may have led the practice in receptions on the day.

Re: Switzer
Well, you saw the game. All I've seen is highlights. I realize his highlights were against lesser comp, but there is enough raw athletic talent there that I think he will be fine. There is no doubt though at 170lbs he needs get bigger, but more importantly he just needs to get stronger. 10lbs at most for his frame with the proper strength gains that doesn't negate his speed will do him wonders. He did get listed at a top 5 performer for the week though. northcarolina.247sports.com/Ar...rformers-109293--------------------------------------------- --- dtownheel17 wrote: ha are we talking about pee wee football? Re: Switzer
To paraphrase Uncle Si Robertson on Duck Dynasty,..."HEY" size don't mean squat "JACK"! Just check in with some of the smaller WR's both college and pro and irregardless to his race ethier. Steve Smith as well as Welker in the NFL and as mentioned earlier Campanaro at Wake Forest. What he gives up in size and physicality he more thean makes up for with quickness and elusiveness. And remember, he is slated to play the slot, not the outside WR posistion. There will not normally be a quick cornerback playing him but a much slower linebacker. Count me in on the side that is eagerly anticipating watching him play next season.

Re: Switzer
Muggsy Bogues was undersized and under-muscled in the game he chose to excell in. Sure Switzer needs to add muscle weight, but speed kills in football and he's got that in spades. West Virginia football-talent wise isn't Florida, by any stretch of the imagination but to belittle the young mans ability because he's light out faster than his competition, is too belittle every kid who has ever played high school football. I mean the kid wasn't playing against 11 blind possums out there.

RE: Switzer
Sometimes redshirting is not a choice but something done due to salvage eligibility due to being out because of injury. You may want to clarify because the ability to catch, run, and be generally elusive does notin any way prevent someone from suffering an injury (particularly a non-contact one). Seems a bit haphazard to throw around that kind of money when injuries are really out of anyone's control.
That being said, NOT redshirting obviously means that he will be taking snaps away from some offensive weapon...note that many of the players who redshirted (due to injury) last year will be back next year. Gio and Highsmith are the only players we are losing who really contributed significantly and we should be getting TJT, Wilkins, and Riley back from injury. Not sure who Switzer is going to supplant for snaps, but red shirting might be a possibility even if he is healthy.
Note that autocorrect for Switzer's last name changes it to Switzerland.

RE: Switzer
What I liked most about that catch is that he went after the football. If he waits for it to come to him, the defender likely knocks it away. That is his mentality and if it carries over to his work ethic in training, then I expect him to get stronger quick.
