Johnny Football

Posted: 1/4/2013 9:28 PM

Johnny Football

I'm watching the aTm-Oklahoma game and Johnny Football truly is a fun guy to watch play the game. Keeps defenses completely off balance.

Makes me even more excited to see Mitch Trubisky when its his turn to be the starting QB for the heels...

Yeah, he's really good.

But can the announcers please quit saying that A&M is running a SEC defense this year. It's their first year. How much changing in personnel and system can be made in a year?

Mitch will be our starting QB after Renner leaves for the NFL.

RE: Johnny Football

We are very deep at QB but from what people expect from Mitch I tend to agree with you. Marquise Williams needs to work on his throwing a lot if he hopes to get the nod after next season.

Coker will be tough to beat out with three Spring and Fall camps under his belt by then?

Haha thats true... even though they are right that aTm has an "SEC defense" its similar to calling Gerald Henderson "a starter in the NBA". Technically correct but only through the definition of the term and not by connotation.

I think people are just going on what we saw this year from Williams which, honestly, wasn't an impressive body of work when he was asked to throw.

RE: Johnny Football

I really enjoy watching Monziel. He seems to have a sixth sense about where everyone is on the field. And he is fast.

He is also helped by something you don't see hardly at all these days:great downfield blocking. ATM's line gets down field quickly, and receivers and running backs appear to be exceptional blockers.

Can Trubisky be this good? We can surely hope.

RE: Johnny Football

maybe Bama will play great, but IMHO, the best performance by a SEC team during this bowl season has been by a Big12 team (A&M).

Need to stop calling this kid Johnny "Football". Really bothers me. Is he the greatest to ever play the game or something?

With Renner, Coker and Tribusky I wonder if they suggest an AJ Blue type move to Marquis. He's quite the runner and not such a good passer.

Re: Johnny Football

Every QB is the next great thing until its time to play a game in college. I remember people were saying Sexton looked like a "white Michael Vick" in spring practice but then came the actual games.

As long as Fedora is here points wont be an issue not matter who the QB is. We need to focus on defense.

Re: Johnny Football

Uh, no.

MW threw for 3000 YARDS as a HS SR, 7500 in 3 yrs. AJ RAN for 2200 yrs as a SR, threw for 1700.

Totally different guys.

Let's let MW have a 2nd year in the offense before we declare him a lost cause, shall we?

Every time I hear guys pumping this or that recruit as the next, sure-fire can't miss HOFer I think, "Mike Paulus."

Agree completely. When you win the heisman as a freshman, then yeah, you're one of the best of all time.

Seems like the kid is well rounded to, has his priorities in order. Reminds me a lot of Tebow.

To me, those two type pleyers are what college sports is all about!

Johnny Manziel has been arrested twice. Funny how we never hear about that. But as soon as they talk about Cam Newton they love to bring up the stolen laptop crap.

Give Mitch a chance to make his on legacy

You don't throw something out of a window if you are innocent. We all know about the scam Newtons (father, son and uncle). But this thread is not about them, this is about a great college football player playing now.

If I was a HC or AD and could have either at the same point in their career, I would take Johnny Manziel all day long.

What? REALLY? You serious? You're kidding right? Cam Newton had arguably the best college football season of all time. Manziel is good but no. Just no. Cam Newton is a freak. Manziel is a shorter faster version of Tebow. I'll take Cam over Manziel 10 out of 10 times.

Never pulled for the Redskins except for the Chris Hanburger days. You probably don't have a clue who that was. And if we are going to play "presumlies" by your user name I presume you are a Saints fan.

Re: Johnny Football

Let Johnny finish his college career before we compare him to Cam. Already runs just as well but not sure about the passing. I'm a Panther fan and a Colt fan. Didn't like Peyton out of Tenn. but after wearing the Colt uniform a couple of years he grew on me. Same goes for Cam with the Panthers didn't like him with Auburn but trying to like him now. A little more class and less dancing would help though.

Re: Johnny Football

Manziel is a R-shirt FR, sat out last season. Makes a big difference apparently, or did the a&m coach have his head up his butt last year? You can see Manziel knows the offense really well, has good vision across the field, has a quick release with a tight spiral- but don't overlook the excellent pass protection he had against a good defense, lots of time to pick receivers.

Manziel's nickname is a publicity stunt to influence favorable press coverage. If you don't like it , don't use it, no harm done to Carolina either way. BUT, there is one such publicity ploy that may sometimes affect Carolina's recruiting - using "the" with osu gives that school an enhanced image with HS players. I suggest not abetting another school's recruiting in even a small way.

Re: Johnny Football

If one is looking to make comparisons ( always, always a risky enterprise ) how about Johnny Football = Choo-Choo Justice.
(re MW: of the 46 snaps he took this past season 29 were runs, where he averaged more YPC than anyone not named Geo on the squad last season. When looking up his stats I was surprised to see he had thrown the ball 17 times, completing 10, for a 141.0 RAT. Selective memory being what it is, I recalled seeing him as a punishing runner and the only pass I remembered seeing throw was the attempt to Quinshad which sailed low and away. If he can pass as well as he can run, well great!)

Re: Johnny Football

Add also that he probably doesn't get the same practice snaps as Renner (I'm not a big Renner fan I'll be honest) so I'll not judge M.Williams ability until I see him with more snaps in a real game. I do believe Renners inability to run kept the Heel offense from being great rather than just good.
