What does "Southern School" mean to you?
With all the talk of conference realignment this is a term I keep seeing and its consistently passed of like everyone knows exactly what is meant. I've lived in NC my whole life and graduated from UNC adn frankly I find this term ambiguous at best. Is there some perceived shared history we have with Ole Miss and UF (and if so what) or is it more of a concern that the "Northern School" would view us as slack jawed yokels were we to join their conference. Something else entirely?
I understand the varrious arguemnts regarding academics, athletics and even distance of travel but the identity argument is lost on me. Does one have to have lived through the 1960's to understand this argument? I'm not saying its racist, but as a North Carolinian, I certainly identify more with the states of Ohio and Penn. than I do with Mississippi or Alabama (no offense to either of those states).

Re: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
How exactly do you "identify more" with Ohio or PA? It can't be culturally, climate based, politically or based upon existing sports rivalries.
I would say that NC is a "mid Southern" school. We are not deep South like AL, Miss or parts of GA. We're not like FL either. I lump NC, SC, VA (south of Richmond) and Tenn in this "mid South" category.
This should be interesting, bet the thread gets locked.

Re: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
That's a very good question adn I think your mid-south distinction is a good one but there isn't a mid south conference to join and there seems to be talking of having other mid-south schools with us regardless of where we end up so I tend to ifnore that aspect of the discussion. As to why I identify more with PA and OH, well, it may be just an unfair perception I have about all of those states. I think of NC as one of the more culturally northern states in the south as a result of our education levels and our tech economy. Fairly or not, I tend to think of the deep south as more agrarian and rural than we are.

Re: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
Simple. It means the school is located in a Southern state. The Southern states are the eleven former Confederate states plus Kentucky, sometimes WV and OK can be included as well. I go back and forth on WV and OK though.
The Southern school phrase is meant to reflect a shared culture and history we have with other Southern states. It is a fact. A native North Carolinian or a native Virginian is probably going to sound a lot more like a Georgian or a Tennessean than a New Yorker or a New Englander.
The reasons for this are obvious and too numerous to mention. --------------------------------------------- --- uncAW wrote:

A Southern University is located in a warm to mild climate. Beautiful women, great tailgating in the company of good looking Southern women. Great bourbon and blended whiskey and a true enjoyment of a football game with friends and or family on a Saturday.

I think UNC is a Southern school but it has lots of connections with Northern schools.....like LAX, Field Hockey, crew, etc. This is one of the reasons why the ACC is so important to us.

Re: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
You posted that you have lived in NC your whole life. But are you "from" NC or another Southern state? And by that I mean, are you a multi-generational Southerner? Or did your parents or grandparents move here within the last generation or two?
Not that it matters but this is an important distinction here. People who don't have long generational ties to the South may not feel the same affinity for the South as others do. I can understand that.
One of my best friends growing up in Southern VA was born in Arkansas, lived in Memphis, lived in Southern VA, and graduated from UVA. But both of his parents were Pittsburgh natives (he grew up in the South as an Air Force brat). So he and his whole family had a very strong affinity for all things Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania (still do). His family was only several generations removed from German immigrants to Pennsylvania. He has very little cultural affinity for the South even though he grew up here.
In fact, I had to laugh back in '93 when he and I took a trip to Spain because he had lived in the South his entire life yet he had to go several thousand miles away to Spain to learn that he didn't like pig's feet! True story.
My parents, on the other hand, had long roots in Alabama on mama's side back to the early 1800s and in Southern Virginia on my father's side going back to the 1700s. My cultural experience was completely different from his even though we grew up in the same area and in the same neighborhood even.
While I am very comfortable in Alabama and the Deep South, my friend is very uncomfortable there. And while he is quite at home in western PA, I would feel like a fish out of water there.
Despite our differences, I have been friends with him since the 4th grade and we remain friends to this day.

Any school south of Virginia and east of Texas.
Notable exceptions would be Kentucky and Virginia itself.

Being "Southern" means I don't think people from SC, GA, Bama, etc have "funny" accents. Or think they are dumber than dirt. Or feel making fun of them because of where they live is hilarious. You get the picture.

Re: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
If you go waaay back, there are quite a few NC families in the western part of NC that migrated down the wagon trail from PA, with many being of German descent, and some common customs live on today.
I have deep NC roots and live further south now, but spend time on business in W and central PA and really like and feel comfortable with the people there.
However I do agree with you in general that we have closer cultural ties to other southern states. I just think we have closer cultural ties to W and central PA than many would realize (not so much so for E PA).

RE: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
I would say UNC is in a weird place right now due to the changing demography of the state. Historically, we are definitely a Southern school. Right now, based on current students, there is no way you could call us a southern school. As a current student, I would say the overwhelming majority (80+%) of students I know are first generation North Carolinians and usually are from one of the Triangle/Mecklenburg/Triad areas. They feel very little affinity for many of the things y'all have mentioned make a "southern school." They would strongly agree with the OP that their culture and history in NC more closely relates to states like OH and PA. Not that there's anything wrong with that; just my observation.

Not in the part of of WNC where I grew up, which is Jackson County(Sylva, Cullowhee, etc.). Maybe there were some German families in the Hendersonville area or Rutherfordton, but in southwest North Carolina, it's Scotch-Irish all the way, baby!!! And a little bit of Cherokee Indian thrown in on my Mom's side. ;)

As to why I identify more with PA and OH, well, it may be just an unfair perception I have about all of those states. I think of NC as one of the more culturally northern states in the south as a result of our education levels and our tech economy. Fairly or not, I tend to think of the deep south as more agrarian and rural than we are.

I would say that NC is a "mid Southern" school. We are not deep South like AL, Miss or parts of GA. We're not like FL either. I lump NC, SC, VA (south of Richmond) and Tenn in this "mid South" category.
This should be interesting, bet the thread gets locked.

Using the CSA yardmark you forgot Missouri.
By the by when did it become gospel that having a southern accent is akin to being bereft of intellect.
I'd say the smartest person in this country is about as country as it gets, one William Jefferson Clinton, from the most hillbilly state of them all in fact.

Simple. It means the school is located in a Southern state. The Southern states are the eleven former Confederate states plus Kentucky, sometimes WV and OK can be included as well. I go back and forth on WV and OK though.

Re: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
I dare you to visit East Texas or Houston & tell me you're not still in the south
the south ends on the west end somewhere between College Station & Austin
being a "southern school" to me means you indentify culturally & politically with the south
if you can't really "get" that then it means you're not likely really southern, by persona
I see North Carolina as a southern school still, a SEC school, both UNC & NCState actually but the SEC will probably only want one. UNC will be the first choice & I hope UNC obliges & chooses to become part of the SEC.
would be a fabulous fit imo

Notable exceptions would be Kentucky and Virginia itself.

Re: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
I think NC is kind of strange in a good way in that we don't quite fit in with the Old South of the Confederacy, nor do we with the Northern/New England states. We are kind of a blend of the two, hopefully taking on some of the good aspects of each, which suits me just fine.

RE: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
Technically, the South lies below the Mason-Dixon line, but it is defined more by its dialects, culture, history, cuisine, music, authors, and climate. UNC is a southern school in that its southern tradition is honored and celebrated, and its identity with other southern states is a part of its heritage.
UNC belongs in the SEC much more than in the B1G or the new ACC. To even consider being a part of the B1G is a travesty and an insult to our heritage. The thought is enough to make Silent Sam lock and load.

Re: What does "Southern School" mean to you?
No one from Mississippi or Alabama tried to kill my ancestors, people from PA & Ohio did. People from Alabama and Mississippi do not move to NC and try to change our beautiful state into NY/NJ. Western Chatham through the Piedmont was mostly settled by the Ulster Scots. But before them many Germans came down the great wagon road. If you lived in NC all your life and went to UNC you missed something. Study John Shelton Reid and UNC's The Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS) is an academic organization dedicated to the study of "southern history, literature, and culture as well as ongoing social, political, and economic issues" at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[1] After you have done some study then come back and we will talk.

I'm gonna bet he lives in Wakefield, Prestonwood, South Park or Tanglewood and couldn't tell you crap about the people in Turkey, Climax, Snead's Ferry, Albemarle or Washington (hint to OP, those are all towns in NC). --------------------------------------------- --- GunslingerHeel wrote:

Any school where the majority of students use the word "y'all" to address a group of two or more...
