Re: Tommy Thigpen highly recommended...

A very good read in support of Thigpen! "[Thigpen's] a tireless worker," Jones said. "He's a great recruiter, but he's also a very good football coach. I did my due diligence of calling around."

Regardless of what happened relationship-wise during his coaching tenure at Chapel Hill, Thigpen is highly regarded and recognized in the coaching circles as a valued-contributor!

If you thought we had a hard time with gaining the committment of Western North Carolina recruits, you can forget about it now. Hopefully, we can hold Thigpen at bay from the Piedmont area (Charlotte; southern I-85 & I-77 corridors) by winning! Nothing short of winning will keep Thigpen out of your backyard!

I know we may have a few problems with recruiting but all we have to do is win. That will solve many concerns....

Tennessee losing is going to help us as much as UNC winning. Both will happen, so I'm not worried. Maybe we'll have room for Thig in a few years when Tennessee fires their latest coach of the day.

My understanding is that Thig and Blake did not get along well (Thig thought he was lazy and took credit for the work of others... and Thig was right from what I've heard).

Do you think he's the only guy on the planet that can recruit? It's not like we aren't competing against guys at Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame, Alabama (need me to go on?) that can recruit.

We need to do a solid job of winning games, keeping the stands full and playing an exciting brand of fotball. We have lots to sel at THE University of North Carolina and I'm confident our staff will do a fine job doing just that.

Unfortunately, Weezy, I can NOT speak with known and specific facts; however, I've read several comments on our Inside Carolina forums that there was friction and disagreement between Coach Thigpen and Coach Blake. Well, who doesn't disagree with fellow co-workers and associates on occassion? If you handle disagreements in a professional and respectful manner, then, positive and productive working relationships can and will develop.

I, too, wish I knew more details as to why some of our posters would rather not have Thigpen back in Chapel Hill?

The only ones that are crying out they don't want Coach Thig back in Chapel Hill are the ones that don't know the whole story on why he left in the first place.

Well, you could solve that problem by telling the true story to those of us who don't know it.

Maybe my brain isn't working right now (very likely), but it states he has worked under 3 title winning coaches, listing Butch as one?

Re: Tommy Thigpen highly recommended...

This is dead on - UT is in a very tough situation in the SEC East

Small in-state recruiting base

only school in SEC-E that splits its state w another SEC school

Vandy is on serious upswing and Franklin understands how good he has it - V has plenty of money & he will not leave unless one of the true bigboys come calling ie. Tex LSU Bama OSU Fla USC

the curse that is UTs fanbase - yes they put alot of fannies in the bleachers but those fans believe UT should beat LSU Bama UGa Fla & USuck annually and won't accept less

Dooley was a fine coach who would have built that program over the course of a decade - but every time they cycle through another coach they just set the program back another few years and each time they change the setback will take longer

This upheaval has converted their HC position from a border line destination job to that of a stepping stone

Reality bites

I think TT is a very good recruiter. I'm not sold on his coaching abilities however. Just an opinion.

My response was to goheels7777. He said we didn't know the truth about what was going on with Thigpen. I simply suggest that he could solve that problem by telling us the story. Maybe then more people would want him back. I don't know the story. I'd probably find it interesting. I don't have an opinion about Thigpen one way or another either.

I don't see the point in telling people "you don't know the truth" if you don't add "you can't handle the truth" since they apparently aren't going to tell us.

some people know the whole story and support Thigpen. these people also think he's an AMAZING recruiter. these people also think he can't coach his way out of a paper bag.

i'm not one of them, mind you, but there are reason he hasn't really been looked at to return.

Great guy, Tommy. Miss playing racquetball with him. He was intense!

I hope some day he can come back to the Hill!

RE: Tommy Thigpen highly recommended...

I'd love to see Thigpen back at UNC. He's an outstanding coach/recruiter. I would also like to know any FACTS anyone has about why he left for Auburn (believe me, I've read more than enough rumor and innuendo). He didn't trash UNC, at least not in anything that I read, but he dissed the football program (Davis' program), and spoke with a tone that indicated he had a sour taste in his mouth after he got to Auburn.

Prof Smith has already answered the question...

and it was rumored TT was not alone, among the other assistants, who felt that way about JB...

Tommy did get a substantial raise @ Auburn, IIRC...

Bomber, you have been around the boards long enough to know if they knew the facts you wouldn't have to ask. They know no more than we do.

My point exactly. I was just being intentionally obtuse.
