Daniel Kane went all in on his attempt to bring down UNC. Now that is has failed, he is desperately trying to prove that he knows that there is more, despite having no evidence at all.
god it has to suck to be a wulfpecker. they have gotten the football pulled out from under them more than Charlie Brown, yet they keep on running full steam at that sucker ever time, with the same results = falling flat on their backsides with the wind knocked out of them.
this is so funny to watch over and over again.

Re: Governor Martin...
Where did this guy get his yellow journalism degree? He can't write worth a .....
Former Gov. Jim Martin in a letter in today's paper objects to a couple points in our Sunday story on his report into long-running academic fraud at UNC-Chapel Hill's African studies department. It has to do with a conclusion he delivered to the UNC Board of Trustees on Dec. 20. That finding would help absolve athletics officials and academic support staff for athletes of any wrongdoing because Martin said they had twice sounded a warning about suspect classes. "On two occasions (in 2002 and 2006)," Martin told the trustees, "leaders of Academic Support for Student Athletes brought to the Faculty Athletic Committee their concerns about students taking nominally lecture courses that did not meet and only required one 20-page term paper, and other forms of questionable independent study." His letter first appears to say our Sunday report hadn't shown enough homework: "In checking this, you found three members of the committee who deny this was presented, only one of whom was present in April 2002." Readers should know that our stories don't always include every interview that we do for our reporting. In this case, we interviewed five members of the 2002 committee who said they either did not recollect such a warning or say it never happened. They include the chairman, Dr. Stanley Mandel, and faculty members Lissa Broome, Nick Didow, Gar Hershey, and Celia Hooper. (A sixth, Jim Murphy, briefly said he had no recollection before his wife hung up the telephone.) Martin's report said the same concerns were raised in 2006. The meeting minutes show references to independent studies being discussed in November 2006 and January 2007. We interviewed three faculty members at the November meeting -- Broome, Steve Reznick and Desmond Runyan, and then Chancellor James Moeser, who was listed as in attendance, and four who were in attendance at the January meeting, Broome, Hershey, Reznick and Barbara Wildemuth. None remembered being warned about suspect classes. Martin interviewed none of these people. He said that Broome told him after he released his report that he had gotten it right. We talked with Broome after the report was released. She said the same thing she told me earlier, that she didn't remember a warning. Martin's letter continues: "While discrediting testimony on behalf of ASPSA as self-serving, you need similar skepticism about motives of the accusers." Martin's basis for the red flag finding comes from officials with close ties to athletics: former athletic director Dick Baddour, senior associate director John Blanchard, former academic support director Robert Mercer and Jack Evans, a business professor and former longtime faculty NCAA representative. He acknowledged that those tied to athletics would have a reason to make up a story. But he also said they were backed up by two others who do not have ties to athletics: Chancellor Holden Thorp and Laurie Maffly-Kipp, who co-authored a special faculty report on the academic fraud that was released July 26. That report was the first mention of academic support being told not to question how classes are taught. It came after we had broken a big story on the case, that Nyang'oro had formed a no-show class four days before the start of a summer semester and it immediately filled with football players. Thorp said in that story that academic support staff helped the players enroll in a class that staff knew did not meet. Maffly-Kipp has now acknowledged that she and her colleagues on the special committee never investigated the red flag claim. That information was provided to her by Thorp. His spokeswoman referred me to the 2002 minutes. Which brings us back to the remaining point in Martin's letter: "The minutes of that meeting clearly state that this subject was discussed, and there is an appended 'Report on Independent Studies.' For our part, we relied on this and four witnesses who were there and affirmed it happened, plus a later conversation with a participant who did not deny it." We reviewed the minutes and posted them online for readers to judge for themselves. (They are also attached to this post.) We did not see a warning about lecture style classes that didn't meet, or out-of-control independent studies. There is nothing in the "Report on Independent Studies" or in the minutes that suggest any kind of problem with the African studies department. Blanchard was an author of the 2002 independent studies report. He said he does not remember much about it other than "just reporting on independent studies." He said he twice raised concerns to the committee in 2006 about an African studies professor offering lecture-style classes as independent studies. We asked if he had any records or correspondence to back up that assertion. He said he had none.

Re: Governor Martin...
If you read the comments under Kane's blog, he gets slapped around some more. I read the first attachment from the 2002 meeting, and the WHOLE FIRST PAGE is a discussion of athletes and non-athletes and the level of independent study participation. The committee concluded nothing extraordinary was going on, and that they would continue to monitor it. So, why was it even discussed if someone had not raised a question about it? Kane's only out that I see is that the minutes do not specifically say something to the effect, "This discussion is in response to a question raised by so and so". But then it goes on at length to spell out the committee's discussion of exactly the problem that is not specifically referenced. Mind boggling. And anger inducing. But it's really not worth it because absolutely no one outside of West Raleigh cares or even thinks there is any more to this story.

DK got owned by the former governor because DK had no evidence merely, conjecture which was wiped away in one fell swoop. Kane's response was so powerful it wasn't even printed in the paper where he works. His most brilliant move was to provide even more solid evidence underscoring the validity and accuracy of the Martin Report. Re: Governor Martin...
Look, the motivation for the N&O has always been obvious. They just don't have the nads to admit it. If they did, I would find it somewhat refreshing to hear Jon Drescher stand up and say, "we couldn't care less about what went on, we just want to sell a few papers and will do whatever it takes, ethical or not, to do it". At least that would be the truth.
The complete scam that they're trying to pass on to most of their readers is that they are concerned about integrity and honesty in college athletics, which is not only a lie of monumental proportions, it's insulting to anyone with average intellect. I suppose that's why most agdog fans suck up everything they write and why the N&O has clearly made them their target reader. It's absolutely obvious.
Drescher would sell his first born for a story that would boost the N&Os rep, so allowing some very questionable tactics by people like Kane and Curliss would be about as concerning as swatting a fly away during a summer picnic. The man sold out long ago, so appealing to his integrity and professionalism is a complete waste of time. One can't appeal to something that isn't there.

"Um, did you read the minutes yourself? They CLEARLY and EXPLICITLY denote discussions of "independent studies and student-athletes" and include both details about specific courses, the grades in those courses, and the number of student-athletes in those courses. Does nobody at the news and record actually research before writing the editorial or did you just rely on the n&o's biased retort which was wrong. Re: Governor Martin...
Jim Martin, Former Governor of North Carolina, Responds:
Let me respond to your criticism (based solely on the Raleigh News and Observer) of my review of academic misconduct at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I was assisted by the Baker Tilly firm in examining the computer data on every course section offered by every instructor to every student for the last 18 years. We compared results for all athletes, and non-athletes, including fraternities and other student organizations. We found evidence of a serious academic fraud and reported it two weeks ago.
My conclusion that the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes raised questions at the Faculty Athletic Committee about so many forms of “independent studies” was based on four witnesses who were there, and several others who knew about it, and on a separate report of a special subcommittee of the Faculty Executive Committee, and on the actual Minutes of the April 2002 meeting of the Faculty Athletic Committee. They were told not to worry about pedagogy, as instructors had wide latitude how to teach courses.
The Minutes report that THE major item of the April 2002 agenda was “Independent Study Registrations by Student Athletes.” There is a nearly 200-word description of that discussion and a 2-page attachment, “Report on Independent Studies.” The latter describes seven independent studies courses of different kinds, two of which were in the African and Afro American Studies Department (AFRI/AFAM). As is typical with Minutes, there is no verbatim account of who said what to whom. We relied on witnesses who were there. This issue has remained a concern of the Committee. Athletes’ Counselors have taken the view that if a course is offered by the Faculty, it is legitimate and any student may enroll if eligible. That is clearly an academic issue, and a very serious one.
Only one witness has now come forward to dispute this, as you stated. It is curious that he would deny that there was any discussion, when the Minutes show that it was discussed, and that it was a continuing concern. Perhaps you and the News and Observer should have questioned his motives the way you questioned mine.
For your information, I devoted the better part of the previous four months to dig out as much as could be documented. My report found strong evidence that the anomalous courses in AFRI/AFAM (approved lecture courses that in fact did not meet but required only one term paper) began in 1997, a few months after it got full departmental status. Other AFRI/AFAM faculty had their signatures forged on grade rolls and grade changes, but no evidence was found that implicated anyone in the scandal other than the department chairman and administrator.
No evidence was found that any other academic department had any similar abuse. No evidence was found of collusion with any coach or other official in the Athletics Department, or its booster club, whose financial records we examined in detail. You and others may find this hard to believe, but I believe that findings and conclusions should be based on evidence, not hearsay and imagination.
For your writers to use innuendo to accuse me of “borderline fraudulent statements” is rather harsh, given that they know nothing, and rely on one erroneous news story. Mark Twain said “If you don’t read the newspaper, you are uninformed. If you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed.” He was joking about that, of course, as am I.
Respectfully,
Jim Martin Former Governor of North Carolina

Check out Donald Pack's comments to Heitner's article.
Donald Pack 1 hour ago
Darren Couple of points: 1) Gov. Martin is a 77 year old chemistry graduate from Princeton. He was a Professor at Davidson IIRC> He really has no reason at all to ruin his reputation as a politician or academic by lending himself to conclusions or statements that constitute “borderline fraudulent” anything.
2) I find it ironic that you pass off as original writing without attribution an analysis done by a reporter at the News & Observer when the purpose of the UNC investigation was academic fraud involving, in part, plagiarism.
Let me help you understand this case: A single professor and his assistant committed some serious errors in judgment in how they ran classes (why they did this could have been as simple as getting enrollment up in a slow major). A sadsack of a coach with money problems (due to owning multiple homes in an economic downturn he could not sell) turned to the godfather of his child (who was an agent) for money. A handful of students committed plagiarism and a former tutor did work on papers which in some cases if the athletes had been regular students would have been allowed by the academic support center and in others went over the line. A number of students took improper financial benefits (4 players IIRC got cash or gifts which ranged from $3,000-$13,000 IIRC) which in some cases involved travel benefits like sleeping on a friends couch or getting picked up at the airport by that friend.
The University has been forthright with the NCAA when they discovered improprieties. They have done an internal and external investigation over and above what the NCAA investigation covered.
That is a summation of the sins of the University. They have accepted the NCAA punishment.
The Kennedy assassination will be 50 years old this year. Conspiracy theories still abound about what happened in Dealey Plaza. Hopefully, nonsense like your plagiarized article won’t take that long to go away.
I hope you’re a better lawyer than sports commentator.

Governor Martin's response was direct, to the point and in my opinion completely discredits the Kane blog posting. I sense that the Governor does not like to have his work product called sloppy and incompetent. Good for him! I have known Jim Martin from the time he was Chair of the Mecklenburg County Commission prior to his election as Governor. He was and is intelligent, articulate and a straight shooter.

Re: Governor Martin...
I hope to see Dan Kane in front of a judge soon defending himself in a slander suit.
