Here's the playoff...

Posted: 1/1/2013 4:55 PM

Here's the playoff...

1 - Notre Dame (12-0)
8 - LSU (10-2)

5 - K-State (11-1)
4 - Oregon (11-1)

6 - Stanford (11-2)
3 - Florida (11-1)

7 - Georgia (11-2)
2 - Alabama (12-1)

I say that ND, Bama, Oregon and Stanford win. So then it's...

1 - Notre Dame (12-0)
4 - Oregon (11-1)

6 - Stanford (11-2)
2 - Alabama (12-1)

The Oregon upsets ND and Bama holds serve.

And then Oregon wins the NC.

When you just look at those match-ups its hard to imagine how anyone could oppose a playoff.

I like it... Think they'd flip Stanford and Georgia to avoid that back to back rematch but I hope I'm around to see the Heels make a run through that tournament

Re: Here's the playoff...

Clempson jumps FSU? That wouldn't make any sense. Any 8 team playoff isn't going to allow 4 teams from the same conference anyway. You'll have five conference champions and at most 2 of the three at-large from the same conference.

LSU beat S Carolina at home.
Clemson lost to S Carolina at home.

LSU's losses were to #2 Bama & #3 Florida.
Clemson other loss was to #12 FSU.

LSU had a signature road win at #9 Texas A&M
Clemson had a signature road win against...well...nobody.

LSU wasn't ranked ahead of CU because of perception...they were ranked ahead of Clemson because they deserved it. They lost last night because they couldn't catch a wide-open 5 yard pass to seal the deal & gave up a 4th & 16 play. Clemson did play inspired last night...it doesn't mean they are the better team overall...and they certainly didn't deserve to be ranked ahead of LSU pre-bowl season.

Re: Here's the playoff...

I agree with RITB. Since when does the winner of a single game mean that the winning team is better?. Once you move into teams with multiple losses, the logic fails on so many levels. Dook beat UNC, UNC beat VT, VT beat dook, etc.

ah, the transitive property, which ARGUABLY has no place because LSU did, in fact, lose to CU straight up...

but I understood where you were coming from in the first place, taking the 1 through 8 current standings...

still, they're based on perception and that perception wasn't right...

So I guess the perception that UNC was better than dook wasn't right, either. We did lose to them head-to-head after all. Does that make 6-7 dook better than us overall?

The same with UNC & Wake Forest...guess the Deacons are better than us in your mind using your logic.

OR...is the proper explanation 'it wasn't our night' either nights.

It wasn't LSU's night last night, either. Still, I'm fairly confident they would beat Clemson more times than not. And...there is really no debating they had the better regular season than Clemson when looking at the overall body of work.

I actually agree with Oregon vs Alabama.

However, I would take Alabama in a close one over the Ducks.

You'll get your eight team playoff when we go to four super conferences. The conference champ games will be the first round, then two national semis and then a champ game.

RE: Here's the playoff...

The playoffs should be 8 teams -- the 5 conference champions + the 3 highest-rated teams in the BCS standings who did not win a conference championship. Seeding according to BCS rating.

1. Notre Dame
8. Wisconsin (Big Ten champion)

4. Oregon
5. Kansas State (Big 12 champion)

2. Alabama (SEC champion)
7. Florida State (ACC champion)

3. Florida
6. Stanford (Pac-12 champion)

Well I hope your a young man because its not happening for 14 years plus the likely option which would move it to the 16th year before that's possible. So lets talk again in 2030.

I'm arguing that actual on the field results trump perceived B-S and you make some lame attempt to criticize my LOGIC?

bwahahahahaha...

no one cares what you or anybody else perceives...

the trophy for the chick-fil-a bowl will still go to the team that scores more points...

and vegas will pay off on the actual numbers, not opinions...

or am I making this too complicated?

and FWIW, Clemson's D finally grew up later in the year, so with a healthy Sammy Watkins I "perceive" they would win a rematch, your "confidence" notwithstanding...

but they don't need a rematch, do they?

Just so everyone is clear...MojaveHeel believes UNC isn't as good as dook or Wake Forest...because on the field results trump this type of perceived B-S.

Thanks for clearing that up, MojaveHeel. Clemson is clearly superior to LSU because they won on the last play of the game. UNC isn't as good as dook or Wake because we lost to them on the field. Good to know...

LSU HAD a better resume than Clemson prior to the peach bowl. That is why they were ranked higher.

Who knows what would happen if Clemson and LSU would play ten times. I know Clemson would not win ten times, and my guess is that given the information we have for their respective 2012 seasons, my guess is LSU would win more than five, but who really knows?

Re: Here's the playoff...

I also am having a hard time understanding why Clemson is better than LSU based solely on the fact that they won on the field unless you feel Wake was better than UNC or State was better than FSU or a host of other times a team won against a better team. The logic that Clemson is better than LSU because they won (in a very close game, mind you) is incredibly flawed. The argument that 'the perception' of LSU was wrong because Clemson beat them is flawed. Saying that LSU didn't deserve to be ranked higher than Clemson and that Clemson winning somehow validated that argument is flawed and takes away from the fact that Clemson beat a very good team and probably one that is actually a better overall team.

That game last night was so god awful that I would take almost anyone's playoff system over what we have now. Finishing undefeated against weak competition should not automatically put a school into a championship game.Every system on this board is an improvement over the mess we had last night. I do like the five conference champions and three at large teams for a playoff.

The sticky point with that is, how do you determine the at large teams? I once ran for an at large position in student government in college. When asked what my qualifications were, I replied that I was large. ;-)

RE: Here's the playoff...

I think you still have to give the five BCS conference champs auto-bids with the logic that one game shouldn't erase 13.

Wisconsin, yes Wisconsin, would still get in on this model with Alabama, FSU, K-State, Stanford getting the four other auto-bids. It's only fair given year to year difficulty differences in the conference. I've always said that if you do a playoff correctly with a set number of teams you have to do it overly inclusive to include everyone who has a legitimate shot at a natty. Obviously, Wisconsin doesn't deserve a shot but that will bear out when the games are played.

I think 12-1 Notre Dame still deserves to get in along with Oregon and probably aTm or Georgia. I think the "no more than two per conference" rule should still apply for at large bids which would exclude the other, SCar, and Florida as well as Clemson (who would deserved to get in OVER Wisky and K-State otherwise).

Here's mine with seedings:

8 Wisconsin @ 1 Alabama
5 Notre Dame @ 4 Stanford

7 K-State @ 2 Oregon
6 FSU @ 3 Georgia

I can't wait for the playoff to get here.

The BCS Bowls as a whole were god-awful:

Stanford 20 Wisc 14 -- 20 punts in the second-half...3 pts scored
FSU 31 N. Illinois 10 -- NIU had no business being in this game
Louisville 33 Fla 23 -- Not as close as the score indicates
Oregon 35 K-State 17 -- KSU a Big 12 Fraud
Alabama 42 N Dame 14 -- N Dame just a BIG Fraud

Terrible games this year...

My only difference would be to waive the 'no more than two per conference' rule. This, for me, would substitute A&M for Notre Dame. I don't think there is much doubt that A&M is better than ND...and would have a shot to win it all. They ended as the hottest team in college football.

Re: Here's the playoff...

OK, Coach.

LSU vs. Oregon ---> Oregon
Florida vs. Alabama ---> Alabama

Alabama wins.

That team has so much depth and it's the primary reason the top teams in the SEC are so good.
It takes talent to win and if you have a 5* playing special teams(Landon Collins) then you've got a full house. As a matter of fact, I believe that Collins played behind Clinton-Dix(another 5*) at Safety.

RE: Here's the playoff...

6 Conference champions, best Independent but must be in Top 10, best of remaining conferences, must be in Top 25 and higher ranked than one of other conference champions.

1. Notre Dame (Independent)
2. Alabama (SEC champion)
3. Kansas State (Big 12 champion)
4. Stanford (Pac-12 champion)
5. Florida State (ACC champion)
6. Louisville (Big East champion)
7. Wisconsin (Big Ten champion)
8. Remaining champion (re-seed if necessary)

Tulsa (CUSA), N Illinois (Mid-American), (Tie-breaker) (MWC), Arkansas St (Sun Belt), Utah State (WAC)

You seeded Florida 3rd and left off Louisville. Louisville beat Florida. Don't care how "bad" Big East is, Louisville deserves the spot.

If teams do not meet criteria, then start with highest ranked team and re-seed but cannot be higher than #5. I would play these games at higher seed home. Then do the bowl playoff picture.

If you want, conference champion must be in Top 25 or forfeit spot in playoffs. This should make the conference championship game that much more important since seeding is important and you want your best team to win and not lay an egg like Nebraska did against Wiscy.
