Re: Coastal Division champs!

So, despite the fact that Coach Fed has talked about winning the Coastal since last Spring and the fact that was the team's goal for this year, everyone is just suppose to ignore that, the accomplishments on the field (tied for best record in the division, best overall record in the division) and the Seniors on this team are just suppose to say it was all for nothing? BS! The Seniors and this team deserve to celebrate that fact that they were the best team in the division this year, despite the fact that the ACC does not "officially" recognize them. The ACC and anyone else can kiss my &^%% for all I care.

And no, nobody is saying anyone is "satisfied" with this year, but for having nothing to really play for except the division, let them celebrate their accomplishements. And "yes", it was an accomplishment.

We were favored in 11 of 12 games on our schedule. Of those 11 games, we were favored by a TD or more in 9 of them. We were favored in every conference game we played.

We avoided the only 2 Top 15 teams in the conference...FSU & Clemson.

Both Miami & GT had to play at least one of those 2 teams.

Va Tech was as bad as they have been in over 20 years.

We lost to dook & Wake...gave up 69 points at home to Ga Tech.

Wasn't really much of an 'accomplishment'.

There is a reason the billboard is located in Charlotte. This is advertising on many levels.

Glad you don't think it was much of an accomplishment. You are entitled to your opinion. We just happen to disagree.

BTW, go tell Coach Fed, the other coaches and the players it wasn't an accomplishment.

And...this is a message board. I'm telling you...not the players/coaches. If you think going 5-3 with our ACC schedule last year was an accomplishment, we will indeed agree to disagree.

If Fedora is as smart as I think he is, he would clearly agree with me. Our defense was horrible for the most part last year. We have to make substantial improvements on that side of the ball...and he knows it.

I didn't say I was 'right'...I said it was my opinion which I was expressing to you & others on this message board. Telling it to coaches/players is completely irrelevant to this argument.

You think 5-3 in the ACC with no wins vs. Top 40 competition & losses to dook, Wake, and Ga Tech is an 'accomplishment'. I don't. We'll agree to disagree.

Too funny...

I am not a troll in the least. I am a UNC graduate, Class of 1992 & have been a fan for over 30 years. I have higher expectations of this program than the 8-4 season we just had vs. weak competition. It was "OK", not "great". 3 of our 4 losses were bad ones...and our 'signature win' was vs...well..umm...Miami? NC State? not sure...

What's also funny is that nobody who has argued with me on this point has disputed my facts...they just call me names or tell me to give my opinion to coaches/players...LOL.

I don't agree with your first comment.

I think the biggest accomplishment we've had since Mack Brown left was the 2001 team who effectively handled the adversity of starting the season 0-3 against STRONG competition like at Texas, at Oklahoma, and at Orange Bowl Bound Maryland.

They beat #5 FSU by 32 points. They crushed Clemson in Death Valley. They beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl.

Unfortunately, the Bunting Era went downhill after that...but that team accomplished much more than this 2012 squad did.

The 2012 team did work hard & played under difficult circumstances. I appreciate their efforts. And...Gio/Q Davis were awesome for us. But, again, going 8-4 with that schedule is simply not a big deal from a football performance perspective.

I'll tell you what...if UNC beat the #1 team in the country on a neutral field by 4 Touchdowns, I would definitely call that an accomplishment. Is that a deal?

If anything, I suppose I hated the defense last season. They were dreadful. Period.

I loved the offense.
I loved Gio Bernard.
I loved Q. Davis.
I love Fedora's up tempo style.
I love the future of UNC football.

Is that enough love?

I'm just giving my honest assessment about our "Coastal Division Title". Butch Davis could've won 3 Coastal Division Titles if VT & GT were that weak during his tenure. VT & GT combined for a 12-13 regular season record in 2012.

Re: Coastal Division champs!

Well, I have to say that anyone who thinks "Roy is the best" certainly doesn't have a whole lot of credibility (I go back a long way) with me. That's my opinion. There have been a lot of years since Mack Brown, and regardless of easy schedules, hard schedules, whatever, we have never finished first in the coastal until this year. So yes, that is a real accomplishment, especially given all the crap around the program because the academic people screwed up their affairs so badly that they affected the football team. Are we satisfied? Absolutely not. Losing to Wake and Dook weren't great, but considering we have a brand new set of coaches and they installed new systems on offense and defense, 8-4 and winning the Coastal was pretty good, especially since we beat Miami, Va Tech, and NCSU to do it. We will be much better in the future, but this was a great start, and I couldn't be happier with the coaches. From what I have seen so far, they are better recruiters than Butch and his staff.

Re: Coastal Division champs!

In my classes, all the UNC football players have started to wear sweatshirts that say UNC ACC Coastal Division Champions 2012. They are making a big deal about it not only with the billboards but also with the players sweatshirts. I think Fedora is using this to get his players and fans excited about the team even though they technically aren't coastal division champs.

Actually we won on step 3. Because GT lost to VPI, they were eliminated at step 2. Miami beat VPI so it then goes to head to head and we win by virtue of our win over the Canes. So anyways, GT finished 3rd.

I would presume the same thing...nothing like trying to sell your program & keep the recruiting momentum going.

If I were Coach Fedora, I would do everything I could to accentuate the positive outwardly. If he (or the powers-that-be) want to make T-shirts, billboards, whatever...go for it.

At the same time, I am sure Coach Fedora is privately completely ticked-off with the performance of his defense & losing to the likes of crappy Wake, dook, and getting pasted at home by 7-7 Ga Tech.

He's a smart guy...he's not going to tell anybody we got lucky to win the coastal on a weaker schedule/artibtrary 3-way tie-breaker/whatever. He's going to milk it for all he can. I would do the same thing.

Now...since this is a message board full of football opinions, I am just expressing mine. If NC State had won the Atlantic Division in similar fashion while beating no ranked teams, I'll bet folks like you would change their tune about the 'significance' of the 'accomplishment'.

I am a fan. I'm not a 'hater'. I appreciate the kids' effort under trying circumstances. We had some decent wins. Gio was awesome. Q. Davis looks like a stud. There's a lot to be excited about.

However, given our schedule, 10 wins this year was absolutely 'doable'...and our defense did not cooperate.

I am more excited about the future than our recent 'Coastal Division Championship'. We can (and will, I believe) be a much better football team in future seasons. There's no reason UNC can't put out talent on the field to go 11-1 with 2012-like schedules in the coming years.

If we hadnt been on probation we would have played FSU in the Title game....so yes it was more then we have done in yrs past...regardless of schedule, doesnt matter who we beat or lost to. plus factor in a new coach with entirely new offense, hell yes...it was a success,
especially if you look at the fact we lost 3 games by a total of like 8 points, and our best player didnt play in some of those games, oh and did i mention we got robbed in the Louiville game when the Facemask wasnt called on the last play of the game? an injury to Gio and a total foul up by the refs against Louiville cost us more then anything this year, you cant blame that on fedora, GT and Duke were our true disappointments this year, and Wake, but we didnt have Gio then either

Wasn't really much of an 'accomplishment'.

Glad you don't think it was much of an accomplishment. You are entitled to your opinion. We just happen to disagree.

BTW, go tell Coach Fed, the other coaches and the players it wasn't an accomplishment.

---------------------------------------------

I can't speak for the players, but I guarantee you if I told Coach Fed, he would look me in the eye & agree with me 100%.

And...this is a message board. I'm telling you...not the players/coaches. If you think going 5-3 with our ACC schedule last year was an accomplishment, we will indeed agree to disagree.

Roy, we did not give up 69 points to a mediocre GT squad. It was 68. Big difference between 68 and 69. Just sayin'...

Ask around.

RE: Coastal Division champs!

As a Georgia Tech fan, I have to say this is a true low for Carolina football.

GT waxed UNC at Kennan......I think we could have scored 80.

Miami is ineligible. If UNC were eligible (which they weren't), GT goes because of head-to-head.

This is Baghdad Bob style propaganda from Chapel Hill in the hopes of delivering a bit of excitement. It's cheap. UNC is a better product than this. The Coastal wasn't anything to write home about and GT isn't plastering billboards about winning it, but this is downright fabrication and UNC should be ashamed. Just go ahead and declare yourselves National Champs it would hold the same relevance.

RE: Coastal Division champs!

That's crap. Ineligible teams count in determining the order. Learn the rules before you come on the board spouting nonsense. In all scenarios, according the the conference rules, we won the tiebreaker.
