RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
As a UNC alum, who is from Durham, NC, I would be extremely disappointed in a move to any conference other than the SEC.
I'm not going to the #&*@%%^ midwest to watch UNC play anything. big 10/12/14/whatever can KMA. Name one thing moving to the big # does for us, that the SEC doesn't do better?
The only thing you can point to is $. The SEC could provide plenty of that (though certainly less as things stand right now). Guess what? I don't give a rip how much our athletic department makes as long as they are able to break even and field a competitive team! I care about things like matchups, games, and players (you know, the point of all this). All three of those are superior in the SEC, and I promise we'd more than break even.
MinkHeel earlier threw out the AAU rankings. The ACC now has 5 AAU schools (md is gone, remember?), the SEC 4. If UNC & UVA went to the SEC, the SEC would have more AAU teams (6) than the ACC currently does (5). So toss that out. Yes, the Big 10 is better academically but who the Eff cares?? SEC is "good enough" and getting better, and we won't lose our reputation just by joining.
All of this is useless prognostication, anyway, since the ACC isn't going to die. All this chatter is about having something to talk about.

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
Actually based on a lot of reports the new SEC network coming in 2014 is expected to pay the SEC teams more than any other conference including the B12G. Just estimates right now of course but the SEC plays the best football and they know what they are doing when it comes to payouts. --------------------------------------------- --- 4thHarry wrote:

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
UNC is a Southern school and has more similarities with the SEC than B1G. Rust Belt vs Growth in the South. Travel costs much less with SEC. Easier ability to 'own' VA/NC recruiting with SEC (nothing better than a native Tar Heel excelling). Much better fan support against SEC opponents (who wants a fall/winter trip to Purdue/Minnesota/Iowa/Rutgers).
I prefer the ACC remains together (ND full-time, PSU, UCONN, Louisville). However, I hope the 'Academics' don't force the B1G on us.

While it may be true that something off the record has occurred, I highly doubt that official contact has been made. The B1G is not going to subject themselves to a possible lawsuit. Contact would have to be initiated by the schools themselves. --------------------------------------------- --- foothills1 wrote:

A lot of it is about academic culture NOT social culture. EVERY member of the Big Ten (except Nebraska) is a member of the AAU (including UMd and Rutgers). In the ACC, UNC, Duke, GT, UVa, UMd and Pitt are all members of the AAU. So a UNC/UVa combo, or UNC/Duke/UVa/GT package would be well received in the BIG TEN.
---------------------------------------------
If its only about academic culture, then, I think you do a bit of a disservice to Carolina fans who happen to not be alumni of the University. While they may not have the intimate ties to Carolina that a grad might, the emotional attachment is there, nonetheless.
The social part of the equation matters to them. Its as much about the atmosphere in BKS or the Smith Center as it is anything else.
What they feel and think should count for something.
PS...sorry if this rambles a bit. I am trying, and, probably failing at, trying to multitask. :D

Its more likely IF we moved (I think we stay in ACC) that it would be Big Ten, not the SEC.
Our recent NCAA infractions make it more likely we will try to avoid the bad rep of SEC and favor the academic nature of Big Ten.

I'm tired of the academic argument against us moving to the SEC. How has Vanderbilt been hurt academically by being a part of that conference?
This UNC to the SEC argument is about like Democrats versus Republicans. I've spoken to some highly intelligent alumni, and nostalgia trumps logic for them. They think we are a basketball school and will never leave the ACC even if FSU, Clemson, GT, and VT depart. Don't y'all realize what's gonna happen with NCSU athletics when they get an SEC invite and we don't?

It took them 40 years as an independent/SEC team to get to an SEC title game, where they lost by 40, even though they have had 3 football coaches who won national titles elsewhere and one basketball coach who had done the same. They did take back-to-back-to-back NIT titles in men's basketball with Dave Odom.

It's interesting to see the schism here. UNC students and graduates should heavily favor either staying in the ACC or going to the Big Ten, whereas the so-called "Walmart fans" should heavily favor going to the SEC (football) or staying in the ACC (basketball).
The obvious compromise for both groups is simply staying in the ACC, assuming that the ACC doesn't academically dilute itself with schools like ECU.

Great post, I asked earlier this week what happens if unc gets an invite to the big ten? Well it appears it may be happening. The way I see it unc will be in the big ten and ncst in the sec simply for the fact ncst won't ever get an invite from the big ten.
Ask yourselves what happens if unc turns down the big ten? Then the big brings in GTech and most likely uva (They won't invite NCST). That leaves unc to the sec and ncst out in the cold. That simply will not happen as much as we all might like.

No, it's not. I realize this is a sports forum, but at the end of the day, the value of the UNC degree is what is most important for students and alumni. The SEC is by far a weaker academic conference, whereas a joint move with UVA to the Big Ten would most likely result in academic value-added.

Keep in mind that this is a sports forum so there is obviously going to be a bias towards the stronger sports conference. UNC's stated goal is to be the best public university in the nation. That simply won't happen if they were to join the SEC.

Personally, being in a Southern conference, with other Southern schools, is the optimum. We as a state have more in common with the likes of FL, GA, AL, and, TX, than we do MI, OH, PA, or, IL. I don't want to go anywhere where people look at us like we're crazy for saying 'y'all.'
But, its a moot point, because the ACC isn't going anywhere.

General state politics have less to do with this than university culture. With more and more UNC alumni going to DC and NY, the footprint is extending North, not South.

Its nothing to do with state politics. Its everything to do with people. We have a common heritage and culture with fans of SEC schools. We do not share that with fans of B1G schools.

---------------------------------------------
General state politics have less to do with this than university culture. With more and more UNC alumni going to DC and NY, the footprint is extending North, not South.
---------------------------------------------
Its nothing to do with state politics. Its everything to do with people. We have a common heritage and culture with fans of SEC schools. We do not share that with fans of B1G schools.

Keep in mind that this is a sports forum so there is obviously going to be a bias towards the stronger sports conference. UNC's stated goal is to be the best public university in the nation. That simply won't happen if they were to join the SEC.

I'm failing to see how joining an athletic conference that will give you more $$ could bring a university down....
but i also failed to see how my degree was 'worth less' because of a scandal involving 15 football players....
i need some ABC kool aid over here!!!!!!

1) he is a state fan ( And so hates UNC ) 2) state fans are terrified of UNC going to the SEC, that dooms them and they KNOW it. 3) he is a state fan ( since when have they given a damn about University rankings? )

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
We can't just choose to say we are going and make a change. With all of our negative press recently, it would likely redouble if we were to try to move to the SEC. Not as much with the B1G, but there would be lots of outcry about athletics being in charge not academics.
I don't know about Virginia, but any change for UNC is going to have to be approved by the Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors for the UNC system. Probably also the Legislature which funds the school.
I just can't see moving ever being approved. Not without lengthy and acrimonius debate. By the time anything is determined the window for change is likely to close and both conferences go in other directions.
I am afraid we will not do ANYTHING and ride this burning wreck to the ground. Does the Ivy League have any openings?

No one but the N&O, the wolpfacker mouthpiece, would say a friggin negative word if we went to the SEC. We would be the talk of sports center if we went SEC.

So, why not follow this argument to its logical extent and petition the Ivy League for admission?
It's charming that you think academics is driving this bus. Academics are in the back seat with basketball just following the hood ornament. They're just window dressing to help cover the financial decision making that's really going on here.

It's interesting to see the schism here. UNC students and graduates should heavily favor either staying in the ACC or going to the Big Ten, whereas the so-called "Walmart fans" should heavily favor going to the SEC.

What a load of horsehockey... so far most alumni are in favor of UNC going to the SEC.
Just another example of a piece of offal wolpfacker trying to stir up something. I bet you are scared ******** that UNC wakes up and takes the SEC's offer.
---------------------------------------------
No, it's not. I realize this is a sports forum, but at the end of the day, the value of the UNC degree is what is most important for students and alumni. The SEC is by far a weaker academic conference, whereas a joint move with UVA to the Big Ten would most likely result in academic value-added.

Reb, as I said above, Crass is NOT a UNC fan. He is a state fan, and state fans KNOW they are screwed, blued, and tattooed if UNC goes to the SEC.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
Explains a lot. I think having UNC in the SEC would be huge. There's really no reason that UNC football couldn't thrive in the SEC. Look at Arkansas and South Carolina. They were doormats when they first came in, but they've improved leaps and bounds.
While I think that academics aren't driving the bus here, I do think that adding Texas A&M and Missouri, in addition to everything else they bring to the SEC, was done in order to help make the eventual SEC pitch to UNC/UVA more attractive academically. I think Slive understood that 14 wasn't the last stop. Adding two AAU schools to get to 14 was in part Slive lining his checkers up to go to 16.
