Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
There is no "chance" to it. It would happen, eventually, anyone that follows recruiting at all knows this. The young men in our recruiting footprint dream of playing in the SEC, not the Big-10.

Then be prepared for disappointment. Unless something changes, our final decision makers prefer the B1G over the SEC because it's more academically prestigious. Our holier than thou mentality will once again bit us in the a$$. Only this time, it could be fatal. Why? While the B1G conference is respectable and better than a watered-down ACC...the SEC is on another level AND if NCSU did in fact go to SEC, there is a chance they could eventually own NC as you suggest.

1) The SEC wants the state of NC badly, and they WILL have a team in the state of NC. 2) The team that the SEC takes WILL eventually own the state of NC, lock, stock, and barrel. 3) The SEC WANTS UNC to be that team, we have the brand and the appeal, we can be a "hit" overnight. 4) If we keep telling the SEC no, they WILL take NC State. 5) NC State will NOT tell the SEC no, they won't even think about it before they say yes.
So it boils down to this, either we go to the SEC, or we get prepared to be 2nd to state in just about every damn thing for forever. It IS that simple.

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
The sports reporter that was one of the first to break the MD to the B1G story is now reporting UVA/GT to the B1G on Monday:
Mr_KevinJones Source: Georiga Tech and UVA will announce decision to leave ACC by Monday. Will join Big 10
This guy works for WUSA9 out of Washington, obviously he could still be wrong, but he is more credible than anything I've seen to this point. This is an actual network reporting it, which makes it much more believable in my eyes.

That would be interesting, especially considering I have heard UVa politely declined the Big-10's invitation.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
That would actually be good news because that would take the B1G to 16. And destablizating the ACC like that would drive FSU and Clemson out to the Big 12 which would make a race for the SEC for the last two spots, and since SEC AD's are on record as preferring UNC...UNC would likely end up there. That would basically kill the ACC, which is sad, but you got to do what you got to do sometimes. UNC did not ask for this.

Actually all this would be over with a simple call from UNC to the SEC.
It would be over for everyone. Everything would be settled and we could move forward.
UNC made their anti-football bed now the only thing that will stop this mess is to go to the strongest football conf in the country.

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
I've seen at least one rumor that if GT bolts to the Big Ten, FSU and Miami will be going to the Big 12 almost immediately thereafter. If that's the case, UVA would certainly go to the Big Ten. Then UNC/Duke go either to the Big Ten--which would almost certainly move to 18 for them--or the SEC. If Big Ten, then NC State and Va Tech to the SEC. Clemson and whoever's left would have to go to the Big 12. There's a report that Syracuse is trying to go the Big Ten, too. The Big Twenty? imageshack.us/a/img339/4163/bigtwentymap.png

If nothing, and not to breed good humor in what appears to be a troubling time for some, DAM I'm enjoying reading all of this; whether BS or True.
Carry on!
However, should the ACC truly begin to fall, someone hasten down the truck, the razor, the bullet, and the pistol. :)

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
Big Ten could realistically go to 20 teams. Four five-team rotating pods, nine-game conference schedule. Each team would play the other four teams in its pod every year and each team in the other pods once every three years.
Southeast Pod: Duke Georgia Tech Maryland North Carolina Virginia
Northeast Pod: Ohio State Penn State Pitt Rutgers Syracuse
Midwest Pod: Indiana Illinois Michigan Michigan State Purdue
Flyover Pod: Iowa Minnesota Nebraska Northwestern Wisconsin
Edit: The biggest problem would be getting that Michigan-Ohio State game every year. I'm sure they could figure it out.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
This could be an interesting twist if there is any legitimacy to the UVA/GA TECH move to the Big10. I do not think we would be a package deal with VA Tech. If we were to be paired up with any in-state school I would prefer it to be NC State because I believe it would be better for the state of NC. While they are the little red-headed stepchild of the state, our tax-payer dollars still go to support the university. I also enjoy the UNC-State rivalry more in all sports because they are so much more fun to beat because their entire season/year/life revolves around beating Carolina. Also, being joined up with State could be our only free ticket from the state general assembly to change conferences if the ACC does fall.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
There is a zero percent chance that the SEC takes both UNC and NC State. They want NC and VA markets. I believe they would consider Duke instead in order to get the UNC/Duke basketball games and two national brands, but their end game is Va Tech and UNC, Va Tech and NC State as a backup.

Not the basketball board, but if Carolina were to change to a conference different from Duke, would they still be able to play twice a season? I realize that out of conference schedules are limited, but would be a shame to not see them play home and homes like they have for years and years.

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
MHver3 is one of the WVU freaks obsessed with hatred for UNC and the ACC. He tweets a lot back and forth with Chris "The Dude of West Virginia" Lambert. They both repeat speculation like they have actual sources when they absolutely do not. Anything they allude to can be found on a message board or as speculation in a legit article.
They throw a lot of mud and hope it sticks. Once they have a rumor, they embellish it with reports of details of private statements by commissioners (usually Swofford) and ADs and President's IT's entertainment, plain and simple. And for The Dude, it drives eyeballs to his blog.
These two tweet on and off for hours sometims - always with venom toward UNC, Swoffy and the ACC. Unlike many, The "Dude" has a pretty solid understanding of the logic of conference realignment so he may seem more credible than most (including many legit sportswriters). No San Diego State to the Pac-12 or any of that ridiculous stuff.
In these times, anyone who half-way understands the value of athletics programs and media markets could come up any of their inside information as reasonable.
I could tweet stuff like that all day for years and eventually one or two would come true. Every sportswriter in the country has played the expansion prediction parlor game at some point. (They're not really very good at it either.) For Chris Lambert, it's an obsession. And he's pretty good at it. But pathological.
And MHver3 is not nearly as smart or as entertaining as the Dude. He's kind of a "Dude" wannabe.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
I know that almost everyone on this board seems to want to go SEC, but as a Penn Stater living in FL, if the B10 goes to 20, here's my pipe-dream:
-------
WEST (THE OLD BIG 10):
Michigan Michigan St. Ohio State Northwestern Indiana/Purdue - Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa Nebraska
EAST (THE NEW EASTERN MEMBERS):
Penn State Notre Dame Rutgers Maryland Indiana/Purdue - Virginia North Carolina Clemson Georgia Tech Florida St.
-------
- Traditional powers Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, Wisc/Iowa/MSU would anchor the west. Traditional powers Notre Dame, Penn State, Florida State and Clemson would anchor the east
- Either Indiana or Purdue would need to play in the east with ND. (Purdue is the more traditional opponant)
- The two divisions can futher be split into pods. However, I would not rotate the pods evenly. It seems like the old-school B10 folks like playing each other every year. It also seems like eastern/southern folks do not really want to play the midwest schools much (as can be seen by the sentiment on this board). It would seem to benefit both groups if you let the eastern pods normally play each other and the western pods normally play each other. Once in awhile you could switch it up to let the other team filter through your stadium.
- I know everybody has FSU and Clemson pegged for the B12. However, Austin (the closest B12 school) is a really, really long drive from FSU (or Clemson for that matter). If you look at the states inbetween, they are SEC states. No additional B12 teams will be added in that area (the void isn't going away). It would benefit the FSU and Clemson athletic departments to keep away venues closer to home. I know that the B10 has the academic component that makes everyone think this can't work. FSU is no worse academically than Nebraska. Also, it is clearly improving. It will never overtake UF, but it is closer to UF than it is USF, UCF, FIU, FAU, etc. Getting the B10 into FL would be huge.
- I see no need for the B10 to add schools north of Penn State/Rutgers.

While I really, really hope we end up in the SEC, I certainly wouldn't mind or be against this set-up... It's stronger than the ACC.
They could possibly even add an extra round of games to the Conference Championship. Say in the East, the top team from each Pod faces off against each other to win the East division, then the winner goes up against the winner from whoever won the same game from the West for the Conference Championship.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
Too many teams. And NC State would be in the SEC outrecruiting us. The Big Ten wouldn't even know we were in it until January conference play for hoops.
If we go SEC, we'll start getting all the in-state football talent and plenty out of Florida and Georgia too. We could be a power in both sports. And our baseball would suck in the B1G.
Florida, Georgia, Vandy need to start playing lacrosse, men's soccer and field hockey so those teams can compete.

Also, if you look at the 5 states that would likely have a B10/SEC overlap, I think the B10 would be okay.
Virginia and Georgia Tech would have their work cut out for them. North Carolina, Clemson and Florida St would be just fine.

not a bad idea, but if we go to 20, we'd nee atleast 10 conference games, Id also have a cross over with each division, so you can have more rivalries that way.

Compliments, Nittany Lion fan, for thinking outside of the box a little. Taking all three of the ACC's southernmost football-first schools is a good idea.
Just a thought here...if you the pod route, and, do not alternate the opponents each season, then its a waste of time. Its basically two leagues within one, which defeats the purpose of these schools being in a league together.
A 20-team league is kind of cumbersome, and, even with your ideas, I don't know that it'd work well enough to satisfy everybody. But its an interesting idea nonetheless.
