Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
OMG, if UNC leaves the ACC for the B1G I am done. I will not sit and watch Northwestern, Iowa and Rutgers. I won't do it. It would also destroy the outstanding baseball program Mike Fox has built at UNC. No kid is going to want to play a B1G baseball schedule. Some may not care about that, but there are others who do.
The ONLY way for UNC to go is to the SEC. Better football than the B1G, outside of Kentucky they would dominate basketball, and the Heels would also be joining the best baseball conference in the country as well. You want to see Kenan get filled up, bring LSU, Alabama, Florida, Georgia or South Cack in and it would be full. Bring in Northwestern, Illinois and Iowa and you might as well schedule Western Carolina and expect the usual 20,000 people.

I'm with you. No to B1G. SEC is a much better fit for our sports programs (Baseball, Basketball, & Football). However, if UNC does join, Bubba better get buy in from the SEC to promote/support the 'Olympic' sports (soccer, field hockey, tennis, lacrosse, etc)more than they currently do. Would be a waste to see our programs suffer.

buckeye, the culture you seek a description of cannot be easily summarised. Its a kinship with the other Southern states that was forged in the fire of a war fought a century and half ago. Its a shared set of folkways and mores. Its a way of doing things, and, interacting with people. Its all that, and, much, much more.
The Reverend could probably do more justice to your inquiry than I did. Just thought I'd put my .02 worth in. :)
About the academic side, yes, I am certain our powers that be see much more common ground with B10 schools. But, as I have said before, its not just an academic fit that matters. The cultural side of it matters, too. Whether or not they weight it at all, I have no idea.
I respect the Big 10 as a league where academics matter as much as they do in the ACC. I respect the sporting history of the league as well. But, if push comes to shove, it is my own personal opinion that I'd rather compete with other schools where the people supporting it remind me of myself.

Imagine these two potential schedules:
Home - UGA, FLA, USuCk, Mizzou, Kentucky, Bama/Auburn/A&M Road - Vandy, UTenn
or
Home - NW, Illinois, Wiscy, Indiana Road - PSU, OSU, Minnesota
Uhh, no brainer.

Have to disagree with this. I'm an alum and think there is a better cultural fit with the Big Ten than the SEC. I'd much prefer to play an SEC football schedule than a Big Ten schedule, but Carolina is not a fit for the SEC in academics and the overall feel of the schools. Without naming specific schools, we might have a stronger overlap with the cuisine of the SEC, but I'd say the campus has more similarities to Ann Arbor than to any SEC school -- academics, strong undergraduate and graduate programs, recognized as a public Ivy, located in a region with the highest concentration of Ph.D.s per capita in the country (cf Raleigh to Fayetteville, Arkansas??), reasonably progressive feel, etc.

I'm with a lot of you guys. I think North Carolina is a great school and program, but they, even more than Rutgers and Maryland, really don't belong in the Big Ten and while I wish you guys the best, I hope it's in the ACC. Unfortunately, what's best for fans and history have little to do with most of these moves. That said, I think North Carolina will stick to the ACC anyway.

I knew they didn't sponsor lacrosse. But I was shocked that they don't sponsor men's soccer. Kentucky and South Carolina compete in Conference USA, so I guess if we went with Virginia we could start and SEC league or do the same.
No women's field hockey either, if I'm looking at it right.
These may be the tipping point in the decision to choose the B1G.
Ick.

Of the sports that UNC fields, it doesn't appear that the SEC offers Men's Lacrosse, Soccer, & Wrestling. On the women's side, they don't appear to sponsor Field Hockey, Lacrosse, or Rowing.
I don't know that there is an NCAA minimum number of teams to sponsor a Lacrosse conference. The NCAA requires a minimum of (6) teams to be an "AQ" conference, but the ACC has played with four, for the most part. Losing MD while adding Pitt, Syracuse, & ND will leave them at 6 pending any further changes.
There are about 61 Division 1 Lacrosse teams. Three current Big Ten schools sponsor men's teams (Michigan, OSU, & PSU). Add Northwestern to that list on the women's side. The additions of Maryland & Rutgers will increase that to (5) men's & (6)women's squads.
I don't see where any current SEC member fields a Lacrosse team.

I am the direct descendant of German-American yeoman farmers who tilled the rocky, red soils of Catawba and Alexander Counties with their own hands, and were both too poor to own slaves and theologically too connected to John Wesley's teachings to consider it, who died under the St. Andrew's Cross of the 49th NC while defending their state and nation against an outside invader, so yes, I feel a sense of kinship with them.

Not to nitpick, but Pitt doesn't have lacrosse. If the Maryland replacement does not have men's lacrosse (Louisville does not, UConn does), the ACC is back at 5 with Notre Dame and Cuse. It doesn't matter if they are AQ, they will all get bids to the tournament in most years anyway.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
Your divisions look pretty spot on, but leagues formed/re-formed of late try to separate schools in same state so the state is rep in both divisions (TV), then set them up as cross div rivalry game. So, instead of getting Purdue and Ind, would likely get one of them and Mich State, NW, or Illinois.
UNC, UVA, MD, Rut, PSU, OSU, PUR, NW
Ind, Ill, MI, MSU, Wisc, Minn, Neb, Iowa

Agree 100%. UNC is not culturally right for B1G membership. I hope they choose to stay in the ACC or go to the SEC.

Yeah, this is really pretty sad. UNC doesn't fit with the BIG and obviously the fans want nothing to do with it. I wonder if Notre Dame had acquiesced to join the BiG as the 12th member if all this chaos could have been avoided.

Update: At the meeting, UVA apparently said there are no discussions ongoing with the B1G. Take that FWIW.

So that means discussions are going on. Thanks.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
of course we all want the SEC from a fan's perspective. I'd rather travel to Gainesville, Athens, Knoxville and Columbia, etc than West Lafayette, NJ and Iowa City. What I am telling you is that the academics are winning against Bubba. We lose.

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
I have a question.
If the academic money is so much more than the athletic money then why is the best academic conf in the nation behind the ivy league (the ACC) falling apart and why aren't SEC and Big 10 school standing in line to get into the ACC?

individually, academic monies are far more, but for sports, the money - with few exceptions (ND, maybe Texas) involves a conference footprint. Say what you want - Bama football does not survive alone.
