RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
I believe that they have contacted UNC and uva but I do not think either will jump unless it is apparent that the acc has become completely destabilized(I.e. fsu, clemson, gt/vT are leaving ). I think both would rather keep the acc intact.

Pretty sure you were told, from the beginning, that the end game was UNC and UVa, UMd was just a bridge/opening gambit.
We have known they want us, badly, for awhile. Doesn't mean we are going.

We would perfectly complete the SEC also. If we are just tossing out hypotheticals. :P

Won't happen. I'm convinced that UNC will stick with the ACC until the bitter end.

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
OK, so I will throw out my hypothetical Big 10 Super Conference allignment . . . 18 teams total in two 9 team divisions:
Eastern Division -- UNC, Dook, UVa, UMd, Penn State, Rutgers, Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State
Central Division -- Michigan, Michigan St., Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, NW, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas.
This alignment (obviously) calls for adding UNC, Duke and UVa from the ACC and Kansas from the Big 12.
Another scenario would be for Georgia Tech to jump to the Big 10 along with Duke, UNC and UVa. Then, Ohio State to the Central and GT in the Eastern.
Then, the remnants of the ACC would be . . .
Clemson, Fla. St., VPI, and Miami to the SEC?
Wake, NCSU, Cuse and Pitt to the Big 12.
BC to the Big East.
[Edited to readmit Wisconsin and Minnesota to the Big 10 - oops]

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
IF the wheels were to come off the ACC, what would the sentiment be among UNC alums and fans in a choice of B1G vs SEC?
Most importantly, what destination would the real movers & shakers - the true big dawgs - desire for UNC?

Re: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
It is irksome that people keep going "We will take teams X, Y, and Z and make this 18-20 team super conference".
No, NO we will not. Conferences will go to 16, and if the ACC does fall apart we will go with one conference member, that most likely being UVa, not wake, not dook, not state, but UVa... we won't be dictating anything else to the SEC or Big-10.

A state fan wants our opinion? o_O
Just from what I hear, take that for what it is worth.
Options are: 1) Save the ACC/see how this starts to shake out. 2) Split over going to the SEC or Big-10... though some anger at the Big-10 for starting all of this.

I can almost guarantee you that the SEC would not take Clemson, FSU, and Miami. --------------------------------------------- --- MinkHeel wrote:

^^ So among those calling the shots - and in a position to influence those calling the shots - you think there is no real preference between those two leagues?

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
Those would be some long road trips. There's a few ways this could go. Isn't Penn State a island in a sea of ACC? Maybe the ACC could steal them (albeit not a popular time to tote PSU). No matter what, you gotta figure the B10 will leave a spot open for Notre Dame until the very end. It would be an immense shock if UNC left the other 3 NC schools. Personally, I think Wake's days are numbered for Div-1 football. Who the hey wants them?

Yes, it would, but then again, it's 1500 miles from Chestnut Hill to Miami. Realize that a Big 10 that stretched from Chapel Hill to Lincoln is actually a smaller footprint. I understand that we're in the middle of the ACC, and we'd be on the edge of the Big 10, but I think people overestimate the geographic problem for a proposed Big 10 that includes UNC.

Someone close to the program believes UNC is a lock to the BIG, along with Texas.
He also said the BIG would go beyond if the right teams wanted to come. Take it fwiw.

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
B1G East: Indiana Maryland North Carolina Ohio State Penn State Purdue Rutgers Virginia
B1G West: Illinois Iowa Michigan Michigan State Minnesota Nebraska Northwestern Wisconsin
It just makes too much sense. The B1G East division would be essentially a Mid-Atlantic division. UNC and UVA share so much in common in terms of university culture with schools like Michigan and Wisconsin. It would be a great football move. Only problem is that B1G's style of basketball is so awful. Playing good teams with bad styles is better than playing bad teams, though.
And there's nothing keeping us from still playing NC State in football annually and doing a home/away with Duke each season.

Not sure why Texas would leave their current situation. They are already in one of the 4 power-conferences that requires relatively closer/cheaper travel for their non-revenue sports + have free reign with their own network. The only think the BIG would offer is maybe a better academic conference for them to feel better about.

Yeah, Texas passed up the SEC to do the Longhorn Network. No way they give that up as long as they have Texas Tech and Oklahoma.

I'm assuming Notre Dame stays independent in football, like they want to, and then rejoins the ACC/Big East leftovers for the other sports.

RE: Big10 Has Contacted UNC and UVA to Join
If NC State and Va Tech end up in the SEC this week in the future would be UNC vs NC State, UVA vs VA Tech like Clemson vs South Carolina etc. FSU, Clemson, GA Tech to the Big 12 with another team to make 14. Rest stay in the ACC, which would probably have to add UConn, Cincy and Louisville if they don't end up in the Big 12.
Would prefer the ACC survives though, and strongly support adding Louisville.

Classic prisoner's dilemma. If the ACC can't stabilize itself soon--i.e., get Penn State or something similar--we should jump at the Big Ten before we get left with the scraps of the ACC, especially if we can move with UVA.

I would assume NC State and Va Tech then bolt to the SEC, and Clemson/Ga Tech/FSU/Miami go to the Big 12. That would leave the ACC with:
Boston College Cincinnati Duke Loiusville Pitt South Florida Syracuse Temple UConn Wake Forest
Plus Georgetown, Marquette, Notre Dame, St. John's, Providence, and Villanova in basketball.

Agreed. ...and man, that would be pretty sweet for me living in Raleigh. I could go watch my Heels play BIGB1TCHESCANTCOUNT teams or skip over to Carter-Finley to watch NCSU get smoked by a nasty SEC team.

There's no reason to take the SEC over the Big Ten other than some people's preferences to be in a Southern Conference. UNC, as an institution, would prefer to be associated with Michigan and Wisconsin instead of Alabama and LSU, especially when it's better for basketball and nearly as good for football.

The crazy thing about this big 16 or big 18 scenario is youre not even going to be playing half the schools due to divisions. You will play maryland, rutgers, etc. ugh

Personally, being in a Southern conference, with other Southern schools, is the optimum. We as a state have more in common with the likes of FL, GA, AL, and, TX, than we do MI, OH, PA, or, IL. I don't want to go anywhere where people look at us like we're crazy for saying 'y'all.'
But, its a moot point, because the ACC isn't going anywhere.

General state politics have less to do with this than university culture. With more and more UNC alumni going to DC and NY, the footprint is extending North, not South.
