Bear kills Stephan Miller(Punishment), our Founding Father - RIP
According to authorities, three trainers were outside the facility in a fenced-in area training a 5-year-old grizzly bear. The bear lunged at one of the trainers and bit him in the neck. The trainer, 39-year-old Stephan Miller from Canyon Country, died at the scene. [Rat edited this so those who open it for the first time are informed, but for a good while after Trey posted this, the identity of who was killed was unknown to us, as some of the first frantic responses reveal.] http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/st...&id=6097429

Man.
Yes, thats Randy's place and unless they got another bear, that's Puns bear too.
What a terrible tragedy.
Like CT said, this is just a truely unfortunate accident and nothing more. Pun has played and worked with his bear for years without incident, so please treat this subject with respect. It's close to home.

Yea I've got a pic he sent me of him with that bear IIRC. Truly tragic on many levels. I hope they don't put the bear down, that would only further compound the misery for Pun and Co.

RE: OT: Holy Crap Bear kills trainer at Predators in Action!!
Oh man that's terrible, terrible news. I have great respect for anyone who would work so closely with such a powerful animal. I guess it can never be 100% danger free, no matter how good the trainers are.
Humans flip out sometimes, even the most docile...it's tragic that when an animal of this strength loses it that it's such a 'mismatch'. I guess it's also possible that the bear did this playfully?

The last time we talked about Dakota, Pun's Grizzly, Pun said he had gotten too crotchety to work with and that they were training another bear. This is horrible; while praying its not Randy, someone close to Pun has been killed. My heart has sunk to the bottom of my stomach.

It was the new bear, Rocky. There is a little bit more info in this story; its still not clear who it is. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/.../n170007D05.DTL

FWIW, Randy is 43 but the reporting is so fragmented, its hard to make anything of it. I tried Pun on his cell but couldn't reach him.

For those that don't know him, Punishment's brother, Randy Miller, won an Academy Award for his work on the movie "Gladiator" Video: www.predatorsinaction.com/vide...o/gladiator.wmv

That link was just updated and ID'd the trainer as Stephan Miller...
Please tell me that isnt Pun...please (04-22) 19:29 PDT Big Bear Lake, CA (AP) -- San Bernardino Sheriff's officials have identified the trainer who was killed by a grizzly bear at a private facility for exotic animals used in movies and television. Sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers says 39-year-old Stephan Miller of Canyon Country was killed Tuesday afternoon when a grizzly that he and two other animal handlers were working with attacked and bit him in the neck.

Oh ****....I thought so but I was holing out hope Pun spelled his name with an "e" and not an "a".
Obviously I never knew him personally like many of you did and I am speechless. For all who knew him personally, I am very sorry for your loss.
RIP Pun...

There are no words to express the grief. He was a truly great man and friend, larger than life, really. Rest in Peace, Stephan, and God please comfort Liz, Liam and Caitlin.

This is a tremendous loss. Stephan was a close friend and more-over a better Father. The world has just become diminished for this loss.

I don't know what to say so I figure I'll share a Punishment story. I was watching a Skins game once and they showed a guy sitting in the stands on tv, and I thought to myself that looks an awful lot like Punishment. Then the next day when I logged on, there was an entire thread on the board devoted to Pun being shown on tv.

OMG. Unreal. I'd never known Pun personally, but I remember we talked about him at this past Hogfest, and I know what he meant to this community. I'm so sorry to hear this devastating news. Prayers to everyone, especially his family.

We met a few guys from the board prior to the game on a tailgate, Consig among them. He was in rare form and managed to get his son right behind the Redskins bench and got a few players to come over high five him. Liam was thrilled. The TV cameras noticed and walked over to him sitting in the stands with his Redskins Chisrtmas garb on and voila!, he was on National TV! It was a fine way to cap a slendid day.

First Sean, now this? How many trials will this board be submitted to in such a short, short time? I had the honor of interacting with Punishment on a couple of occasions concerning scout.com matters. Always a professional, good at his job and to me a very good man. My heart and condolences go out to his family and his extended 'family' here.

RE: Bear kills Punishment, our Founding Father - RIP Friend
Back in the mid '90s, Stephan created a home for all of us orphaned Redskins fans out there on the net, and allowed us to make that home our own. He birthed our communiity, nurtured it and fretted over it as you would a child, devoted his time, efforts, and money to it, and then when it was able to stand on it's own he allowed it to do so like any good parent would.
He was our founder, our community leader, and our guiding star. He was a kind and generous friend who was willing to give so much if you got to know him personally.
My heart aches for his family, and I'm filled with sadness over his loss .
Stephan was one of the good ones. For all those who came to know and respect him, he'll be sorely missed.
Rest In Peace, Stephan.

That was my boy... we drank brews, we roomed at Hogfest, we spent hours online and on the phone... laughing, cutting up.
He was so unique, and had so many interesting life experiences... I don't know what to say. I loved that guy.
Here's to you buddy.

I am absolutely shocked! I just got on the board for the first time today and never in a million years would have expected to read something like this. Godspeed, Stephan--you will be missed more than you know. Every person on this board--and every person with which you've worked through an amazing career--owes you a tremendous debt of gratitude. My heart and prayers go out to his family and his friends. May God hold them all close.

I really am in shock. I just spoke with him about getting together in early May since we live pretty close together.
Stephan: You were more than a friend - you were a mentor, a counselor, a caring individual who gave everything he had to make this a better place. I thank you for all the help you gave me over the years when I just started out as a writer. I knew, if all else failed, I could call you for advice and there was never a time you would not answer. I will miss you.
I have so many stories to cherish and thank you for that. The Vegas trip alone was worth the price of admission.
RIP.

Stephan is responsible for the birth and growth of RoarReport.com (formerly LionsFans.com). He was an amazing mentor and an even better friend. Thank you, Stephan, for listening to me bitch about the network when I had some kind of shallow gripe, demonstrating your California coolness and offering up timeless advice; for helping me through rough patches in my life when I needed someone the most ... and for always putting me in my place when required.
You will be missed. God speed to your entire family. You will never be forgotten.
There would be more, but I am so numb right now ...
