CNBC on Yahoo says Tennessee is the worst state to live in

CNBC on Yahoo says Tennessee is the worst state to live in

Considering the source I am not surprised. Unbelievable that some liberal journalist that calls NYC or Jersey home thinks Tennessee is the worst place to live.  Where do these people come from ?  Funny the top ten are either from the south or midwest.  Flyover country for the progressive elitists.

Good. I don't want to see a lot of people in Tennessee.

You know what I tell people about how we live

in Tennessee when asked (especially by Yankees)......

Did you ever see that TV Show The Beverly Hillbillies? Well that is exactly how it is....hog jawls, possum and cement ponds....don't move there you would hate it...

Seems to work every time!

Even Memphis ain't that bad. $0.60 oysters at Mortimer's tonight. Sounds like a win to me.

Re: CNBC on Yahoo says Tennessee is the worst state to live in

There's really no need to politicize it. It's not a result of "liberal elitism," much as it supports one's own biases to blame that phrase, even with zero supporting evidence. There were objective factors taken into consideration: crime, obesity, education, etc. Objectively, Tennessee ranks very poorly in these areas. That's just a fact.

But lists like this are silly. First, they attempt to encapsulate an entire state as being the same, which can't be done. Living in Nashville is different than living in Knoxville is different than living in Memphis is different than living in Bull's Gap. Second, they presume to know what people look for when they choose where to live. Or that those factors affect everyone in a particular place equally. The notion is absurd.

I love living here in Nashville. I think I'd love living in Chattanooga, from what I've seen of it. On the other hand, there are parts of Tennessee I definitely wouldn't want to live in. So I don't.

I would agree Greg, with the exception that it is a politicized argument to begin with. Kind of silly to blame a responder to such and say, no need to politicize it. I have lived in New Jersey. They are very liberal and their views are therefore slanted towards their liberal utopia.

And believe me, you would not be happy there, regardless of your political bias.

Smoking, crime, and obesity statistics are necessarily political? How so?

I guess if you wanna see something a certain way bad enough, there's no need for evidence.

I don't know that this assertion is political necessarily...

but I would point out that while smoking, crime and obesity statistics aren't political per se, the decision to focus on those, and exclude other statistics, might well be done with some kind of political bias. I'm not saying it is (I have no idea how anyone could know that), but it's certainly possible that the group/person that chose those stats as the random barometer of what makes a place a good place to live (I agree with everything you said about that above) COULD have done so knowing well that those stats were likely to make a southeastern (and therefore likely red) state show up high.

But that's just speculation of course. What I think leads some to the conclusion of bias is the same thing that leads others to a presumption of bias whenever Fox News broadcasts anything. It comes from a network (CNBC) that a segment of the country sees as very biased.

Re: CNBC on Yahoo says Tennessee is the worst state to live in

The crime stats are misleading. AS has been linked previously  in TN the crime is reported to the FBI for every category that fits and these stats reflect that inflated rate as most states only report it as one type

http://www.wate.com/story/23630435/law-enforcement -say-report-ranking-tn-most-dangerous-may-not-be-a ccurate

Darrell DeBusk with the Knoxville Police Department says Tennessee tracks crime by the number of incidents. The FBI uses a different system called Uniform Crime Reporting. Therefore, when comparing Knoxville with other cities and states, DeBusk says the odds are stacked against us.

"Basically if you have an incident where you have five different types of crimes that occur, all five are marked in Tennessee. Where in a state that uses UCR, they're only going to report one being the most serious," adds DeBusk.

Law enforcement officers in the Knoxville metro area say the violent crimes encounter are robberies, aggravated assaults, and homicides.

So you ask is it a political ranking, the obvious answer is yes

Would Liberals claim Conservative bias if Fox News claimed New York or California were the worst state to live with the selectors being strong anti drug laws, lax gun control laws, low taxes and quantity of churches?  These are objective  factors. Objectively,  New York and California rank very poorly in these areas. That's just a fact.

Good point.

And many libs would claim conservative bias if Fox News said that water is wet. tongue

Over the years, I have heard so many complaints about bias from Fox News (which I will not deny), but you can almost never get those same folks to acknowledge the same from CNBC, MSNBC, PBS, NPR.
