The #57 & #60 players on Scout's top 100 list and they were recruited while Pearl was on a show cause, something that I was told wasn't possible by some. Oh well, the Auburn folks are sure glad they have Bruce.

Pearl had the no 6 class in the country with three top 40 guys his first full recruiting class at Tennessee. The guy absolutely can recruit like no one at Tennessee since Stu Abedeen. I laughed at the folks who thought the show cause would somehow hamper him.

Even more alarming, supposedly he's focusing on Dwayne Bacon.

the anti-pearl arguments on here (when he was still the coach) and you folks know who you are, were some of the dumbest arguments in the long and storied history of dumbness.

Yeah, it sucks that he is after a guy we are after.  He will have them top 3 in the conference within 3 years. But what are you gonna do.

We could have done alot worse than DT after Martin couldn't find a place to bail to until after the prime time portion of the coaching search season was over.

Barring major coaching changes, the top 4 for the foreseeable future should be Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, and Auburn, in some order.

I can live with that.

This thread can be filed under "shocking news".

I don't know how Mike DeCourcey, who is one of the better basketball writers out there, is surprised at how quickly Pearl was able to get talent to Auburn.  What are some of these guys thinking?

I had no doubt he would get players in there and win real soon. I guess the hope is he will get so many offers after about year three he will leave Auburn and go somewhere else. We really don't need Auburn being a powerhouse in SEC basketball. They have always been for the most part a program you could count on to get a road win and were automatic win at home.

I don't know if I completely agree. There are so few good teams in the SEC right now (consistently, there's really only two: UK and Florida) that UT could probably use another tough conference game on the sked. It's not like in football, where an Ole Miss or a Mississippi State gets good and you say, "Damn, can this conference slate get any harder?" Adding one more really good team to the schedule helps UT's RPI whether they win or not, and helps prep you for the NCAAT. I'd rather that than to just keep playing SEC bottom feeders who do nothing for you either way, other than either an expected W or a deeply damaging L.

we actually need 5 or 6 teams to be good in this conference. If we are one of those teams, that is.  Then all we have to do, most years, is finish in the top 5 or 6 to get an SEC bid.  Unlike the past couple of years when finishing second could leave you on the wrong side of the bubble.

Exactly. It's good for UT if the SEC is perceived as being good, and having several NCAAT contenders. If Pearl can make Auburn into an upper-echelon squad in the conference (and he can, and he will ... mark it down if you haven't already), there's really almost no downside in that for UT. Sure, they lose an easy W or two to notch on their resume, but those are hollow victories the committee will probably pay little attention to. You're better off losing on the road to a Top 30 team than winning at home against a 200+ team.

Or maybe I'm just making a case for why you can be justified in rooting for Pearl again. cool
