TEMPLE OWLS

Posted: 8/27/2014 11:32 AM

TEMPLE OWLS

Don't sleep on Temple tomorrow night folks.

I don't think they win but they have the capability of keeping it interesting for a while.   With the experience they are returning and the changes at Vandy, this could be a game into the 3rd qtr.

Re: TEMPLE OWLS

Vandy is going to unleash a defense 'unlike anything that's ever been seen before in the SEC' (paraphrasing Coach Mason) and all that's left on the installation is tweaking.

Then there's the 'new' West Coast Offense that will take the SEC by storm.

I'm sure the entire SEC will be taking notes.  cool

edited to add: Vandy has more SEC level/caliber Redshirts than Bama has National Championships (according to Vandymania) ...so there's that.

I think it will be interesting to see the changes and how the players have adjusted.

Usually a scheme change take way longer than one offseason.

Vandy will destroy Temple.  Blackman High would give them a better game.

Re: TEMPLE OWLS

You may very well be right.

Here is my thought on this.

Temple returns a good bit of the starters that played every game really really close..

-They played Notre Dame fairly tough in the opener last year
-Lost to Houston by 9, same one that almost beat Vandy in the bowl
-Lost #7 Louisville by 23
-Lost #15 UCF by 3

Their avg loss was 8.9 pts...   Thats counting the 23 point loss to Louisville, 22 to ND and 18 to Cincy.

They return a QB (soph) that threw for over 2000 yds and 20 TD's lst year as a freshman.  He also rushed for over 300 yds.    I just think he will be able to keep Temple in the game if the line can give him time.

I could be totally off base...  Just have a hunch that it will be close.

Temple ended the year trending up lost @ Rutgers by 3,  @ home to a BCS, UCF by 3 and beat Memphis on the road by 20. Would not surprise me if they keep it close or pull it out. They play Penn State later this year so they were destined to face Franklin this year.

Re: TEMPLE OWLS

Temple is replacing 4 starters on the OL and lost their top 2 WRs due to graduation and their 4th leading WR last year Christopher is out for the opener with a foot injury, also lost another WR due to suspension. Their no. 2 RB Zaire Williams (rushed for 500 yds last year) is not on the depth chart and unlikely to play tomorrow night. 4 new starters in the secondary (which as bad as their secondary was last year may be a good thing) and a few new guys in the front 7 as well.

PJ Walker is a dang good QB though need to make Temple 1 dimensional by shutting down the run game and forcing him to throw it to some untested WR targets.

You could all be right... I just have a hunch. Umass was worse and it was close for some time.

Re: TEMPLE OWLS

VU was a pretty disappointing 1-2 heading into that UMASS game after the craziness at the end of the OM game and what ended up being a pretty wild 2nd half against USC. VU walked into Gillette Stadium in front of a crowd of 16,000 that looked for like 5-10K having been there (might have been the smallest crowd to see a D1 game last season) flat as a pancake. Played easily the worst game of the year that day, would have lost to UAB the next week with a similar effort.  If Vandy were to play that poorly against Temple or Old Dominion this year they would lose.

To me that was the low point of VUs season last year 2 deflating SEC losses and the news of Chris Boyds involvement in last June's events coming out the day before the team left for USC. Thankfully for VU fans they bounced back and played much better after that with a few hiccups (the 2012 team was a much better squad overall).

I would think that the home opener with a new coaching staff and players wanting to prove themselves after Franklin's departure would not be comparable to where that UMASS game fit in last years events.

Re: TEMPLE OWLS

I agree that Temple will keep it close. Vandy has limited playmakers on the offensive side of the ball and will look to grind it out with a running game and short passing game relying heavily on the TE position. Seymour is a good back but has been hurt so they will start an undersized freshman as the feature back. The defensive side of the ball is dependent on youth and inexperience with an entirely new secondary; this normally leads to a bust or two in assignments leading to a few splash plays that could keep Temple in the game. Temple doesn't look very good but is the only OOC team Vandy plays with a pulse this year; their schedule is a complete and utter joke...thank you James Franklin.

Re: TEMPLE OWLS

I don't doubt that vandy SHOULD beat Temple.

I just think it will be a game for most of the contest. I think Vandy will have some rust and will also have all the pressure.

Think about it. D Mason's first game after a highly successful run by Franklin, new schemes, Temple has nothing to lose. Veteran center to call line checks, VERY GOOD QB, SR RB and Zaire Williams is on the roster (had over 500yds as a freshman).

Don't get me wrong - Vandy has the horses to come out and take Temple to the woodshed...they may do that in the 4th qtr. I am just saying it will be close in the 3rd. I have been wrong before.

Re: TEMPLE OWLS

It could be interesting. They will not be much of a home field advantage.  There is a Titans home game (pre-season) and a downtown outdoor music event at the same time as the Vandy game.  Add that to the fact that the Vandy game will not start until after 8pm central and there are other good SEC games on TV and there may not be 10,000 - 15,000 people in attendance.  That has got to be a downer for the players.  New offense and defense for Vandy and it could be fun.   Having said that, I think Vandy wins.

Temple nearly beat UCF before Top QB in Draft made some plays late last year.

Re: Vandy Game tonight

Huge difference between a 4th preseason game...then most boring and useless game in all of football...and a home opening game with a new coach. Vandy fan support is embarrassing.
