Why the fear over Utah State?

Why the fear over Utah State?

Everyone knows that we will be a young team this year.....but so will Utah State.  Everyone worries about our offensive line, but their offensive line has problems too....and even worse ones than ours because they are trying to rebuild with far less talented players.  Heck, they are not a talented team at all.  Their receivers are green, and their QB is coming off of a major injury.  To me this looks like a game where we could just hand the ball off about 80 percent of the time and win with ease.  Besides Keaton, who do they have that we should fear?  Honestly?

The fear is there because we have absolutely sucked for 5 years.

I think we definitely should win. They do have a very good defense and Quarterback. Their offensive line is new and their secondary is inexperienced.  I think we'll be so fired up they want be able to compete with our energy. I am looking at us getting a 42 to 17 win.

I hope those are not famous last words....
I think we win, but I am concerned over the question marks we still have.  Great WRs are not as effective if our QBs can't make the pass.  RBs are not as effective when a young O line has trouble opening holes.

The day I worry about a loss to Utah State is the day I give up on UT football all together!!!! There is NO WAY that this team should be within 17 points of us. Goodness gracious, DOOLEY beat a good NC State team on a neutral field!!!!!! DOOLEY!!!

If Butch doesn't whip this teams ass IN NEYLAND, he may not be the right guy. I don't give a rats ass about Chuckie whatshisname... One great player should NOT beat this team, period!

Utah St has been really good the past few years and we haven't. They are a dangerous team and have gotten some quality wins recently IIRC. I do expect us to win, but I don't think it will be a cakewalk. And I wouldn't be shocked by a loss.

Re: Why the fear over Utah State?

Let's all be honest.  We should handle this team.  One comment stated, Utah St has a good defense; they gave up 34 and 31 to slightly above average BYU and Boise St teams last year.  Another comment stated, they have beaten good teams.  Best wins in the last two years, N. Illinois (2013) and LA Tech (2012).  So while I will not group Utah St with Ark St, this is a game we should win and win by more than 2 TDs.

They return only 3 starters off the defense. I think it was 4 on offense, only 1 OL. The 1 WR they return will probably be suspended for a DUI. I enjoy watching Utah State, but they are going to get blasted this game. Lane and Hurd should both go over 100.

Because Derek Dolittle left UT 5 years behind in recruiting.  Because of South Alabama last year.  Because this team is still trying to find it's killer instinct.  Because Utah St. will be more than happy to be an underdog coming into Neyland Stadium on a Sunday night in front of a national audience and beat the crap out of the Vols.  Because UT CANNOT afford to take any team lightly this year.

You're right. I went back and looked at their record the last few years, and those are their best wins. But I don't think that tells the whole story. Last year they lost by a field goal at USC and by a touchdown on the road against a top 25 Fresno St team. Two years ago they lost at Wisconsin by 2 points. Three years ago they lost at Auburn by 5. Would UT have been able to play any of those teams that tight on the road in those years? I doubt it.

But the main point is that Utah St. has shown over the past few years that they are capable of playing on the road in hostile environments and providing a serious challenge to teams that, on paper, should be better than them. Again, I expect us to win, but I don't think it will be easy.

We are not good enough yet to overlook any team on our schedule.

I don't know which Utah State team you've been watching recently.

Last year, they went 9-5 and 7-2 in the Mountain West conference. This includes a win over then 24th-ranked Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl.

In 2012, they went 11-2 and beat Toledo in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. They also scored a victory over Utah and fell two points short at Wisconsin and a field goal short at BYU.

In 2011, they went 8-6 and 5-2 in the MWC. They nearly won at Auburn and lost by one to Ohio in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

And all of this after a 4-8 season in 2010.

This team can scare some people. I don't think that they can win at Tennessee, but their chances are much better than we would like to think.

Utah St is far greener than we are and much, much less talented.

Re: Why the fear over Utah State?

Because any game can be won or lost due to turnovers and great QB play in sustaining drives can lead to ball control. If you take away bad penalties and turnovers then fully agree but this is part of the game so I will personally be concerned until the game is over.

Fine. But that doesn't mean that they won't give their opponents a game.
