Baseball Vols

Baseball Vols

Throughout the season, I was a little disappointed at the lack of talk about our baseball team on the premium board, so I'm going to try this post here. Coach Serrano really has things going in the right direction. Today, we found out that the Baseball Vols got two HUGE additions to the program, both of whom will be immediately eligible.

Chris Hall was an NAIA All American at Cumberland (2014 NAIA National Champs) who graduated early and is transferring to UT with 2 years of eligibility remaining. He's an Outfielder and leadoff man who gets on base a lot. His game has been compared to that of former MLB star Brett Butler.

Zach Warren is a big-time LHP who originally signed with Tulane. Not sure how he got out of that LOI, but he was drafted in the 23rd round. He very well may be an immediate weekend starter.

Here is my projection for the lineup and pitching rotation next season. I think it'll be a breakthrough year for the Vols:

Projected Lineup

Chris Hall RF

Vincent Jackson DH
Christin Stewart LF
Nick Senzel- 2B

Benny Santiago C
Nathaniel Maggio 1B
AJ Simcox SS

Jordan Rodgers 3B

Johnny Youngblood CF

Pitching Rotation:

Andy Cox- LHP (Jr.)

Hunter Martin- RHP (So.)

Zach Warren- LHP (Fr.)

Midweek/Middle Relief:

Kyle Serrano- RHP (So.)- midweek starter/middle relief

Peter Lenstrohm- RHP (Sr.)- midweek starter/middle relief

Andrew Lee- RHP (Jr.)- midweek starter/middle relief

Trevor Bettencourt- RHP (Jr.)- middle relief

Drake Owenby- LHP (Jr.)- middle relief

Closer:

Steven Kane- RHP (Jr.)

Re: Baseball Vols

To be clear, when i said I was disappointed in the lack of baseball talk, I meant response from posters. Danny is doing a great job over there posting content and keeping us up to date on the baseball goings-on. I just wish we'd get more fan response from fans on these boards.

Re: Baseball Vols

1B Maggio

2B Senzel, Moberg

SS Simcox

3B Rodgers

C Schultz, Houser, Santiago, Bramlett

CF Lance,  Jackson

LF Stewart, Hall

RF Hall, Wormsley

DH, Senzel, Lance, Stewart, VJax, Hall

Andy Cox
Hunter Martin
Andrew Lee
Kyle Serrano/Zach Warren/Kane

I can't make myself throw freshmen into the line up sight unseen. That said, if Santiago is as good or better than Houser defensively and can hit better than Schultz, he could get the starting job. CDS has said that getting good offensive numbers is a bonus at the catcher position, so Houser is going to be tough to beat out. I think he had one passed ball charged to him last season.

If Hall can hit SEC pitching like he hit NAIA pitching then this is a good get and it could be the magic bullet for replacing Maddox. He can play any outfield position so between, Stew, VJax, Lance and Hall I think you have the outfield and the DH covered. I haven't given up on Plunkett, though he's not exactly "killing it" in the Hamptons League this summer. Personally, Plunkett is a big kid and I might give him a shot at 1B as well as the outfield.

As for the pitching, Andrew Lee has been impressive as a starter in the Cape this summer. He ended up being the closer this season, but I don't think that is where he will stay. With the new guys coming in we should end up with a solid rotation AND a mid week starter, i'm not sure who will be where, but for the first time in the CDS era, we should have the depth necessary.

For the first time, I'm more worried about the offense and defense and less concerned with the pitching. Losing Maddox and Smart hurts defensively and offensively. Senzel hasn't shown the defensive skills Maddox had and Rodgers hasn't shown the offensive production that Smart had. Not getting Lane Thomas didn't help us in the offense department either.

I forgot to mention Kevin Steen, a pitcher out of Oak Ridge who was drafted in the 9th round by the Red Sox has yet to sign with them, if he ends up at UT it would be big. Crossing my fingers on this one.

I miss The Dugout...

but can totally understand the reason that a separate baseball board wasn't continued. There was just so little traffic on it - even during the season. And in the offseason? It was a complete ghost town. I'd post something, and two weeks later my post would still be the most recent one on that board.

But I wonder what it might have been like now that Serrano is coach instead of the tail end of the Delmonico tenure and then the Todd Raleigh disaster.

Slightly off-topic.
Anyone paid attention to VFL R.A. Dickey this year?
Is he out of shape?  Or is just not as effective later in the game?
Looks like he should only pitch about 60 pitches per game....his stats are ugly from pitch 61 onwards...

There were two really good baseball guys on the Dugout. Mitch Martin and Perry Paris knew their college baseball. Then we had Frye to heckle Clemson and Vandy.

Tulane had a coaching change. Warren asked for and was granted his release.

Is Santiago a catcher only or could he play 2B or CF?

If Vandy can win it all with their stadium, then we can't blame ours for anything.

Re: Baseball Vols

Few players taken in first 10 rounds don't sign these days. Steen is an athletic kid with tremendous upside. It may take years for him to truly take off. The BoSox will be a solid organization for him as it has been for Mookie Betts and Casey Kelly (before trade).

I agree. However, if he wants to sign above slot, i'm not sure he'll get it just based on what has happened so far with the Red Sox's signings. You certainly would have better insights than I.

Simply never was enough traffic. For example, this thread would've taken 4 months to get this many responses and views. Also didn't want premium members to search all over for news, notes and updates.
