Beat UGA, UF AND USC this year...

Beat UGA, UF AND USC this year...

So while having coffee this morning I was looking over the schedule and thinking about the games.  I am not saying we definitely will, but this is the best I have felt about this possibility in a LOOONG time.

My reasoning...

UGA - By time we get to them we will have played a good team, a great team and a decent team.  No REAL cupcake. Not to mention we have a bye week the week before.    They play Clemson, SC and Troy.   I think they come in 2-1 or 1-2.   They say Mason (QB) looked good... I have heard that about others before they actually started a game too.

UF -  We will have just played UGA away and UF comes to Neyland.  They will not have played anyone other than Bama.  Who knows how they will adapt to a new OC.   Their D will be good... but not better than last year.   I feel we break the streak.  They do have a bye the week prior so that is a plus for them.   Also we will have been battle tested by time we get here.     (could be good or bad)

USC - This is actually the one of the 3 that makes me the most nervous.  Going there, Spurrier mad about last season.  They return D Thompson at QB.   However - they lost A LOT of people.  Shaw made things happen with his legs, Thompson will not, Clowney always made a huge play against us...he is no longer there.

If we win 2 of 3 here we have a shot to be on top of the East.   I feel this year is more wide open than last.

Thoughts?

(note - I did not say all this would happen, just saying it's our best chance in years at beating  all 3 based on schedule and departures.)

May I ask what you put in your coffee?

I think we could upset UF. The others will be a stretch.

Love your positive attitude, though.

Re: Beat UGA, UF AND USC this year...

I like your thinking........

Here are some things to consider......

Jeremy Pruitt was a huge hire as DC for Georgia, the style of defense he runs is perfect for the type of players they have. Their running game will be tough to stop. For me the 2 biggest issues we have are the OL and the DL. I have several friends who are ex-Vol lineman and have stated we will be in big trouble this fall, unless both lines improve between spring and fall camp.

As for the Florida game, they bring back the 2nd best Total Defense in the SEC, their new OC has improved his abilities since he was here several years ago. DC felt confident in him running Dukes offense, and he will have a upgrade in talent to work with.

Haven't decided yet on the SC game, I want to wait until I see how we do with our first 5 games.

I am excited about the possibility's for this fall.

The big unknown will be injuries with all our tough games.
Battle tested --yes, but possibly worn out also

Re: Beat UGA, UF AND USC this year...

I just can't see this team beating any of the high end SEC teams with the youth and inexperience we will be depending on in the OL and DL. Being an optimistic person by nature, this is difficult for me, but historically controlling the LOS in the SEC wins games and these are our two biggest question marks in my opinion. Our real shot in these games similar to the Bama game is to create turnovers defensively and hit some big plays on the offensive side of the ball since our skill position talent will be extremely talented, albeit young. I will be cheering like a banshee as always and hope I am wrong....I definitely like your outlook better than mine.biggrin

I hope we win all of those games, but I wouldn't count on it. Georgia and South Carolina on the road will be tough. We could easily go 1-2 or 0-3 in those games, even though I believe the Vols will be competitive.

Re: Beat UGA, UF AND USC this year...

I'm thinking we are competitive with all three of these teams and have the talent to beat them. What I like about our youth is they haven't gotten use to losing. With CBJ leading these guys, I expect they won't. I'm also thinking Dobbs is our QB from the beginning of the season through the end, short of an injury. This bodes well for the inexperienced OL, as he can be very mobile when he needs to be. I think that deflates a defense more than anything. Getting a good rush on a QB, only to miss the tackle, its like throwing a punch and missing. It takes more out of you. GO VOLS!

I agree on all points... Are any of you more optimistic than you were last year at this time?

Re: Beat UGA, UF AND USC this year...

Actually I believe Mason started 3-4 games last year after Murray tore his acl . Completed 61% of his throws too . He didn't look great , but better than anyone we had last year looked . i DON'T THINK WE BEAT uga OR usc on the road and would take 1-2 against those three teams in a heart beat.
With the running game they will have next year with Gurley , Marshall and the two stud freshman . Mason won't have to be great , he will just have to manage the game and not turn the ball over

Re: Beat UGA, UF AND USC this year...

Re. the OP, Chris Lowe has ranked our O-line unit at 13th out 14 SEC teams. And that is the good news. He ranks our d-line dead last. Lindy's also ranks both units as the worst in the SEC. We might pull off an upset somewhere along the way, but realistically, we should expect to lose all of our games against top SEC opponents this year.

In 2015 I think we start to turn it around.

I'm more optimistic than I was this time last year about the big picture and the long-term future, yes. Butch is killing it in recruiting, and by the time our current freshmen are upperclassmen, we should be very stout.

Optimistic about winning a bunch of games this year...not so much.

I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment.    We always stress the importance of winning the line of scrimmage.   That is where the rubber hits the road.    Think about it.    Both lines totally inexperienced facing a schedule of the nation's best football conference.   I wish you to be right and me totally wrong.

Ole Smokey has it right. We have a legitimate shot in all of these games. What a sad state Tennessee fans are in worse. Worse than the actual program honestly. The program hasn't been this healthy since 2006. Defensive line will show this board what speed actually does when it is present. Our defensive ends are vereen, Jacob johnson, and Curt maggitt. When is the last time we have defensive ends of this caliber?

Lofton, add the likes of Mixon, Sawyers, Mosley, Hendrix, Barnett; mix that in with a group of quicker, faster lb corp, you could have a D that could stop a few teams enough to stay fresh and keep the O on the field.

Are you an expert? What's up with the condescending comments about anyone who doesn't share your opinion?
