Green Egg

Posted: 6/8/2014 6:32 PM

Green Egg

I know it is the time of year when sports new slows down and charcoalers who have the Green Egg begin telling of its virtues.  I have not seen one but I saw a very heavy ceramic charcoal grill at Sams for about $570.  Has anyone tried it?  How does it compare to the Green Egg?   Is there a way to get a good price on a Green Egg?  I have a small "Australian Walk About" grill, a very large metal charcoal grill, and a very, very large gas/charcoal grill combination and the latter two have almost never been used because I can get 7 or 8 ribeyes on my AWA grill.  Do I need a ceramic charcoal grill?

Re: Green Egg

Would have to believe that the "no name" ceramic grills would produce similar results.  That said, I've got my Egg cranking up for a couple of ribeyes as I type.  The Egg really stands out for long burns.  I was sold when I saw someone comment that they could put ribs on, go play a round of golf, and have them ready when they got back.  Having a charcoal grill (lump charcoal) hold temperature for enough time to smoke a butt (8 hours plus) without touching it is what makes it worth the bucks.

BGE will hold an Eggfest all through the summer.  They will sell the eggs at a discount as they were used during the fest.  The bad part is you have to go to the fest and pick it up.  Look on the BGE site for a list of all the fest's and there are quite a few.  I've had a BGE fund going and I'm getting pretty close to my goal.

Got a Holland Grill.

Friends were downsizing and moving back to Cali.

One wheel caster was busted and the igniter didnt work.  Repaired the caster right away and just replaced the igniter today as wife doesnt like lighting it with one of those long lighters.

Cooks everything great.   Have done Steaks, Turkeys, veggies including corn. The Corn was special today :)

The price was perfect.

The guy who sells Big Green Eggs in Memphis has the most annoying commercials.  Really he does.

Love my large Green Egg. Best Gift I ever gave my wife! Check out the Barbecue guru. It will keep the temperature steady for all your Barbequing.

Amen!  But I'd still love to have a BGE!

Get a Primo. Bigger grilling surface, and the oval shape fits more stuff lik ribs.

Re: Green Egg

I bought the grill you asked about from SAMs a few months ago. I love it. I cooked ribs (5 hours) and it held the temperature steady. It's pretty easy to control the temperature. I haven't tried anything that takes longer to cook. I can't compare it to the BGE, but I am very happy with my purchase.

Re: Green Egg

I have a BGE and I saw the ceramic grill you ate talking about at sams about a month ago. In my estimation the sams ceramic would easily do 90% of what the BGE would do. The test would be when you do a shoulder. The beauty of the BGE is you can walk way from it for 8-10-12 (and longer) hours and never have to change charcoal due to heat retention and air restriction. As for steaks, no different than a weber kettle. For some reason I think it does a better job on chicken than a kettle or gas grill. The difference for me is long cooks and is the main justification of the price in my mind. I only have the BGEwith a nest. The plate setter is a must. Other than that you don't need any other accessories I have also heard Primo was a good grill.

I understand that the Primo rusts and tends to not hold heat as well as the Egg.  The Egg has a lifetime guarantee, butI am not sure the length of  the Primo guarantee.  I have had an Egg for 40years and would never have anything else.  I currently have two different sizes, one for my wife and me and the largest for large groups.  Them most I have cooked for is 84.

Re: Green Egg

My brother got the one from Sam's, it is good but does not hold heat like a BGE. they do not discount BGE, but you can find a used one from an egg fest or someone that is moving a long distance and doesn't want to move it. They last forever, Just make sure they have not used lighter fluid!!!!

I have an XL BGE and it is the best present my wife ever gave me,

You can cook anything on a BGE!

Re: Green Egg

Long cooks - you can do the same thing with a weber smokey mountain using the minion method plus you have a larger cooking area.

short cooks for steaks, just use the bottom rack of the WSM.

save yourself some money.

I'm just glad Hamilton Fireplace sponsors UT football in the Memphis area. Their commercials are hokey.

Re: Green Egg

Check out barrelsmokers.net

They do fire brick lined smokers, I've bought one a few years ago and love it. Long burn times, maybe not as long a a BGE, but I get 8-9 hours on a full basket of lump charcoal. Plus its up to temp in 15 mins at half the cost and has much larger capacity.

I have a large and an extra-large BGE and they are worth every penny.  That is not saying the others aren't good too but I am totally satisfied with my Eggs.

Re: Green Egg

I have owned grills and BGE is the best one hands down!  I have an XL BGE. Smoker, grill, brick oven...all in one! Bought it as a package deal which includes bags of charcoal (lump), plate setter, starter, tool, and some accessories.   Easy to install. Great cooking results with the control of temperatures. Great stone oven pizzas. Not difficult to shut down to save charcoal. Never use lighter fluid with the BGE!!!  Set up three 4.5 pound chickens vertically with beer cans...fabulous. Trick is measure interior temperature of the meats/poultry to know when it is done.

There are usually two times during the year when the Eggs are on sale.  The week before Father's Day and the week before Christmas.

I used to make that statement before I ate food cooked on the Egg.  NOTHING cooks like the Egg.
