I like where you have us drafting.  As for who you have us drafting, I don't know much about him, but holy cow what a mountain of a man!  6'8", 360. Would he instantly become the biggest player in the NFL?  Not sure if 6'8" is too tall to be an effective NT, but I will definitely check this guy out this season.

He actually does have pretty good leverage & movement skills for a man that size, and he caries the weight pretty well.

As for the Mock Draft, I do get why the Jags would select a QB (if Gabbert doesn't improve drastically & there's picking first), but I don't think there's any way that the Raiders would pass on Jadaveon Clowney.  The Raiders love those big-name, freak athlete type guy; and I think they'll give Flynn a chance this year but then give Tyler Wilson a go, if that doesn't work out.

Re: New 2014 NFL Mock Draft

I think that unless Bridgewater goes absolutely nuts in 2013, no team will pass over Clowney for him. As things stand, Bridgewater is a nice but not amazing prospect...whereas Clowney is one of the best prospects for his position in recent memory (probably one of the best ever). And it's not like Clowney is a punter...pass-rushers are arguably the second-most important position to fill after quarterback (perhaps offensive tackle might be ahead).

Now, if Bridgewater elevates himself to a Luck/RGIII type of prospect through his play in 2013, then yes, he'd go ahead of Clowney. But right now, I can't see it. You don't take need over once-a-generation talent at a key position.

Agreed.  In semi-recent memory, I'd say Clowney's the best prospect at his position since Julius Peppers.  The only way I see anyone but Clowney going first is if Bridgewater or another QB has a stock-soaring senior year and a QB-needy team wants him bad enough.  That's exactly what happened with Peppers when Houston passed on him for David Carr.  Turned out to be a mistake and I think passing on Clowney for a QB would be too.

Re: New 2014 NFL Mock Draft

I was looking at the Jacksonville roster and they need quite a bit of work.

There are different philosophies in building franchises.  At this point, it looks like the Jaguars are already on the clock with a decision between Teddy Bridgewater & Jadeveon Clowney.

Should Bridgewater go on to have a solid season, I'll be leaning towards the QB.  The analyst always point to the playoff teams and their QBs then the defense.

Re: New 2014 NFL Mock Draft

Way too early to figure out where we draft as we've not even penciled in the roster.  And sitting here today, I could see a lot of positions that may be of higher need than NT.  As of right now, we could need a WR or S significantly more.  I think our offense is relatively tight (we have good depth at OL, including young guys likely to make PS, RB, and QB) other than WR.  Assuming Jenkins performs up to his draft (I think he will), Crabtree comes back (ditto), and Patton is the sleeper of the draft (I think), that still leaves us 2-3 WRs down.  We have guys who might step in and if the first three hit, then 1st R isn't necessary but if not...

As for D, I think we have great depth at LB  (especially with the young guys).  After that, it is a total crap shoot.  We don't know who we have at CB or S, even with Reid.  I think as between our DBs and Dl, though, we have much better depth at the latter (we have our starting DEs, along with Dorsey, Williams and Tank--I think we'll be fine at DL).

Bottom line is dude may be a handful but a lot of chips will need to fall before we draft a NT first.  IMO, that would mean somewhat improbably that each of the following happens--Culliver matures professionally and personally, we extend Cox, Reid is the real deal, and Robinson is a worthy replacement of Whitner.

They'll probably pick up a couple of WRs and CBs in free agency also.

No kidding!  Injuries & FA will take a toll on these two positions in the off season.

This week I'm feeling like 1st & 2nd round CB.

My August 13th "way-too-early" top 2 picks would be:
1st - Loucheiz Purifoy or Marcus Roberson (both crazy good Florida CBs)
2nd - Jordan Matthews, WR Vanderbilt (leading returning SEC WR & Jerry Rice's cuz)

At his point, we are set at rb, te, qb, ol, dl, and lb. better yet, lots of young guys and guys coming up. While in jest, cb, wr and safety are really only positions of need.

Re: New 2014 NFL Mock Draft

I am sorry, I think it will have to be a WR in the 1st, or at least if it was up to me. I would take Brandon Coleman if it means we will need to trade up. I believe we will draft 2 WRs, may be one more in the mid-rounds.

RE: New 2014 NFL Mock Draft

now we could have 13 picks in 2014. I think our most obvious need is CB and possibly WR- although we could be developing some players there- patton to me looks like a future starting quality WR.

SS very well could be a need too as well as backup QB (will be interesting to see how daniels develops) and backup OT.

as always, I hope some of those picks are flipped for future picks in higher rounds in 2015.

Michael Thomas might be an interesting contender for Whitner's spot next year. His coverage skills intrigue me.

I think if the 49ers see a corner or safety they love, they'll target him and trade up or down to get him (like they did with Reid) but at any draft slot they actually use, they'll probably go BPA.

we'll have an abundance of picks, again, to do just that should we so choose!

Re: New 2014 NFL Mock Draft

Speaking of WR prospects, some bad news:

Malcolm Mitchell

He is rated by CBS Sports as a round 2-3 prospect (and the 49ers will likely have four 3rd rounds picks).

He pulled a Gramatica...
