That is pretty big, small signing.  That makes 5 WR under contract for this year.  I wonder if the team still plans to draft a WR.  I thought that the niners could target Fleener instead of going 6 deep at WR, but after  his pro day today i would be surprised if he made it to 30.

RE: 49ers re-sign Ted Ginn

awesome move. we showed patience in waiting it out. he obviously realized that no team sees him 'primarily as a WR' and so we get him back for 1 year. i think we're basically set at WR although drafting one to develop would be nice. roster space would be limited though with moss (assuming he works out and sticks around), c-tree, manningham, williams, and ginn.

i'd like a big young WR in there somehow especially with moss on a short deal. but could we carry 6 WRs? williams i guess would be in competition for a roster spot if we don't but i think he's shown enough that he's a solid young piece to have around.

anyway, will be interesting to see how we approach the position in the draft. amazing that we don't have any gaping holes on this team and will essentially be drafting for depth across the board.

OG, CB, S, WR, and OLB are positions that we could seek to add depth. great offseason!!!!

Re: 49ers re-sign Ted Ginn

Actually, I think the 49ers have like 7 or 8 WR under contract for this year, as they also have Dontavia Bogan, Joe Hastings, and John Matthews under contract. It's unlikely any of them make the final active roster, though, especially if they do add another player through the draft.

There's been some speculation already that this could spell trouble for Kyle Williams, although I'd be surprised if they just cut him outright without giving him a chance to come back and compete. Williams definitely showed more promise in the passing game than Ginn did, but the scars of his NFC Championship game fumbles may be hard to erase completely.

Absolutely love the signing.  He was a key part of our return game and a healthy Ginn would of put us in the Super Bowl.

eek I thought this had no chance of happening after his comments about wanting to be known as a WR, but I am thrilled with this news! Now how to we switch Grants tender from a 7th round to a 2nd round pick so we don't lose him?tongue

Hopefully Williams can keep progressing as a receiver and work on his return skills in practice. That way if Ginn gets injured again, Williams will be prepared to redeem himself.

very happy i think ginn is an important part of the special teams that helps us win the field position battle. being a fan that watches to ratio, penalties, top, and conversion % i appreciate the impact akers, lee and ginn have on our success. wish we could have kept costanzo seemed like he had a part in every big special teams play.

Re: 49ers re-sign Ted Ginn

i think even in a weak WR FA class ginn would've had a hard time finding a team that viewed him as a WR first and foremost. but particularly in a year like this, i am not at all surprised that nobody bit. he made a good decision in coming back to a team where he is valued and familiar with what we're doing. he can still get touches on an occasional pass here or there, not to mention those end arounds now and then.

Ginn and his fly sweeps are the real deal. Higher, found this clip and suspect we'll run it next year

Imagine, Kaep in the gun, fakes the fly sweep to Ginn in motion and runs up the middle for 50 yards

Re: 49ers re-sign Ted Ginn

I actually think this might be an issue for Randy Moss, not Williams.  I don't trust Moss, and he and everyone knows he's on a strict audition now, no slack.  He needs to come in, get to work, and dedicate himself, or I think he'll be gone in camp.  If the niners draft a WR, which they will, that's six players.  NFL teams don't keep six, someone's gonna get axed.

Im reaaally glad we resigned Ginn.. Hes such an electrifying player that everytime he touches the ball it could go for 6. I still remember that one play where his TD was called back against the Ravens.. he is the type of player that can score at any moment whether it be KO/PR/WR.. his speed is godly.

Ginn is one of the best returners in the league this is huge for us. Just keep the band together and keep moving.

RE: 49ers re-sign Ted Ginn

I don't know that this spells doom for Williams.  We only have Moss and Ginn for a year, so we're going to need WRs next year too.  Williams actually showed some potential later in the season once he got PT.  He had a horrible playoff game, but everyone deserves a second chance.  Not that I'm comparing him to Jerry, but I remember some early games (I believe Minn in particular) where Jerry was Mr. Fumble (I have the vague recollection of him kicking the ball down the field and just shaking my head).  Williams was effectively in his rookie year, and only started PR/KR duties late; it was horrible weather, etc.  I understand sometimes you can't past things like that, but I like the kid and hope they give him a fair shot and not hold it over his head.

We still need a WR in the draft.  Even if Willaims sticks, we need one more so we're not in the same stiuation next year that we are this year.  We can carry six WRs, especially when two can do return duties.

Any chance Ted Ginn Jr. can turn into Mike Wallace?biggrin

I'm glad Ginn Jr. is back.  He solidifies the return game.
Regarding expanding his WR role, I hope he can do his best Mike Wallace impression.
No play is to big for Colin Kaepernick!!!
