Updated: Niners quest for CB = Resign Rogers

Schefter is reporting we're in on Eric Wright and Brandon Carr.

I would like either one, would be extatic with both (if possible).  I think other than WR, our secondary needs the most improvement.

Re: Niners quest for a Starting Corner

I thought Eric Wright signed back with Detroit...guess not.

Brandon Carr at Carlos Rogers money would be ideal, but it will cost more than that.  Paying 8+ million for a CB will be a borderline cap buster.

At over $30 mill to spend, seemed like we had a lot of flexibility...

Re: Niners quest for a Starting Corner

Thing is Brandon Carr is 25, so it gives the 49ers a young starting CB I don't think they'll over spend on a CB but I think that they're looking at not only adding depth but young starters.

Re: Niners quest for a Starting Corner

Hopefully Carr will want to raise his profile as one of the young premiere CB's in the league, what better way than to come be the #1DB on a top 5 defensecool if he is out of the price range how about trying to go after Wright and Marshall for the price of Rogers/Carr and add nice depth in the secondarybiggrin

Re: Niners quest for a Starting Corner

Hearing now that Carlos Rogers is about to resign, and at $7.3 million a year. Curious to see how the guarantees and everything else works out, but if it's literally that high, I'm a little surprised that they jumped so much over their originally quoted number.

But if it means he's coming back, I'm ok with it. I like him more than Eric Wright. Carr's intriguing, too, but I liked how well Rogers fit into the system and how he approached game prep.

RE: Niners quest for a Starting Corner

it's hard to say we grossly overpaid for him. that's a pretty fair deal IMO. it's not cheap but it's 4 years of a guy at his prime who played excellent football last year. it's hard to argue against this deal.

RE: Niners quest for a Starting Corner

Probably voidable after 2 years.

So after rookies, I thinks that leaves us with about $6 mill to play with...assuming Alex is at 10 mill per

WR, OG, PR/KR, OLB, and overall team depth look to be the holes we have to fill. i feel pretty good about that, given how early we are in the offseason.

Re: Updated: Niners quest for CB = Resign Rogers

base value of the contract is 29.3 million, meaning rogers signed for, essentially, 300k more per year than what Terrell Thomas got, but also signed for a huge sum less per year than what Cortland Finnigan got, and also got a deal with a per year average less than he would have gotten under the franchise tag (which is what Brent Grimes is probably looking at).  I think this is, at first glance, a solid overall deal, but I won't be able to comment further until I see the numbers breakdowns, the per year average (ie, is it backloaded), the guaranteed money, and whether any of the deal is voidable (that would be tough to fathom, considering Rogers is 31).

I guess this means at draft time, it's WR or best player availble

Re: Updated: Niners quest for CB = Resign Rogers

Hey, quick question, have the niners cut Spencer yet?  Because doing the math, Cap savings from cutting Spencer + Roger's old contract (4.5 million) = Roger's new contract + 500k to spend.
