The next 5 games are quite winnable
Okay lets not focus on the negative... I've decided to be a bit positive....
The next 2 games are at home.. and the next 5 look like this...
Vs Titans Vs Chicago @ Green Bay Vs Jacksonville @ Seattle
We have been great at stopping the run this year and I really think we'll take the Titans at home.. Chicago have Cutler but have weak receivers and their strength is still running the ball.. Green Bay might be the bigest challenge and it will suck not having Clements.. They do however look quite average today against the Vikings. The Jags strength is running the ball and their D isn't what it used to be.. And Seattle is beatable and we can definitely take them...
I'm not predicting 5 wins but if the coaching staff can make some tweaks and fnally have some faith in the passing game there's no reason why we should lose any of these games..
There might be a miracle brewing in Arizona as they are losing 21-7 against the Panthers.. Hopefully they have the running game to close it out..
If we can somehow win 4 out of the next 5, then I say the fights still on for this division...

27-7 now!! i am watching the Titans/Jags game... Titans so far look different with Young as QB... so we have to be cautious about them IMO
If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

we really need to take 4 out of those 5. We also have to beat AZ at home to get the tie breaker.

i honestly want to believe that they are all winnable, but knowing this defense and Jimmy Raye, we'll be lucky to go 3-2 in the next 5 games. so that puts us at 6-6 after 12 games.

If the defense plays the way they did today and somehow find better rythym on offense, no question.

see, there they go again.
showed up?
Manning 32 completions, over 300 yards passing, Colts 8 of 19 on 3rd down conversions, over 33 minutes TOP.
who allowed Favre to hit Lewis in the end zone? who allowed the Texans to roll up 21 points in the 1st half? who allowed Manning to pickup apart the 49ers? who allowed Reggie Wayne to get so wide open?

i've been a diehard 49er fan since i was 8 years old, and Defense wins title games. This defense is mediorce at best, and that's why we are 3-4.

I agree with you to a point... The defense played exactly what the coaches wanted them to. The pass rush was a little better only because of the confusing alignments. 1 TD and 4 field goals, pretty good.
If Raye would have "allowed" Smith to do his job we would have won!

We held Peyton to his lowest QB rating of the year, We held Peyton to his first game of the year without passing for a TD (he's passed for 15TD's this year and averages over 2TD's per game)....
And this is the kicker (pardon the pun) we forced Indi to punt the ball 7 times today.. The next best team has made the Colts punt 4 times.. In fact the Colts have only punted the ball 19 times all year before this game which is an average of 3 punts per game...That is a MASSIVE difference.. If you look at the stats or the film we have put up the best numbers and performance defensively against the Colts, by far...
We also made them kick 3 field goals, 2 of which they made because we turned the ball over in our own half twice... The defense deserve a LOT of credit today. You can't just say we did bad because we conceeded a a certain amount of yards. You have to look at those numbers relatively against the other teams in the NFL to be fair...The Colts have the most elite Offense in the NFL, you can't just say we did bad because they put up yards...
If you watched the Vikings game and not just the Favre highlight you'll know that our defense owned them for the majority of gthe game and they made a lot of huge stops.. The Vikings have also been very hard to stop on offense all year.. THEY AVERAGE 29.4 POINTS PER GAME!!!!! They took a miracle Favre pass to beat us and that was after consecutive 3 and outs by our offense and hardly any offensive yards in the 4th quarter.. A great D can only hold on for so long against a great O.. Our D was exhausted by the end because our O litterally couldn't stay on the field...
Agaisnt the Texans we also held a 5-3 team to 3 total points in the second haf... We once again fumbled the ball in our own redzone for a turnover which turned into a TD and the Texans are a very competant Offense. You keep them in check by beating up on their horrible D..
If you thnk we're losing because of our D you're really not watching.. CLEARLY it is our O that is losing the games for us... I don't know how you can possibly be watching the games and think the D is more at fault.. It's not even close..

RE: The next 5 games are quite winnable
I agree with dea49. I agree with defense wins titles but the offense was using the defense as a crutch and couldn't quite balance out the team. Not much more to say. Special teams had a so-so day as well. Andy Lee was great winning the battle of field position majority of the day. dea49 wrote: I agree with you to a point... The 3rd qtr killed us. In the shadow of the goal post most of the time the coaching staff went ultra-conservative to the point, they lost.

Sure there are other factors but none as glaring as the uncreative play calling. Utilize your players according to their strengths and success will come. Today our D was bend but not break. Plus we sacked a QB 3 times, who previously before this game was only sacked 2 times.. WITH 4 linemen!!!! <= wow .. so to say our D is bad, you must be smokin something real good.

RE: The next 5 games are quite winnable
WestsideConnection is much more on point here than Stokes83. He can look at the numbers all he wants and say the defense is mediocre. How bout the sack numbers? Pass rush showed up today in a big way.
If you watched the game, Stokes83, you would see that the defense was very good, even when Nate Clements went out of the game. I think we did miss him a little in the second half but we still did a great job. When the Colts are turning to trick plays to beat you, then your defense has done a great job. Aubrayo Franklin was masterful today. He's the best unknown DT in the game.
Alex Smith showed that he has learned from these 2 years of sitting. He has the talent to be very good and Singletary said that he was making calls himself because they were having headset problems. That's pretty impressive considering the situation he was in. This kid has a real shot here. 300 yd day against the Titans is not out of the question.
Why stop at 5 games though? The entire schedule from here on out is winnable. We just need to focus on one at a time and hopefully we start winning again. This team is capable of putting together a playoff push here. The Cardinals are only going to be 1 game ahead of us with their loss to the Panthers. We need to stop panicking on here right now. If we lose to the Titans next week, that's when panic mode will be right for us.

If we were a mediocre D those numbers would be closer to the average.. In the past two weeks we have had at least 3 turnovers in our own half which have lead to scores by the other team.. This is why i'm shocked that you actually believe that our D is the reason we are losing....
Despite our complete meltdown against the Falcons we are 10th in the league in yards conceeded... You'd have to agree that better playcalling and not turning over the ball in our own half would lead to more time of posession which would decrease the opponents yardage and thus making our D ranked even higher, prob top 5, and we've played the 2nd and 3rd best Offenses in the league and the Cards..

RE: The next 5 games are quite winnable
I agree Westside I think we are loosing games because the Offense isn't doing its part to win. The defense is closer to elite with the way they have played some of the elite offenses. That average for the vikings is that before or after they jammed 38 on the packers?

Re: The next 5 games are quite winnable
I'll go one step further: Look at the niners schedule, and look at the four teams they've lost to:
-combined record of those four teams: 22-6 -three of those teams were playoff teams a year ago (minny, indy and atlanta) -All four of those teams are looking like playoff teams this year (with the ravens falling off, and nobody out west except the broncos, and out east except the patriots, this looks like the year the texans make the post-season). Add in the cards, and the niners have faced five "playoff teams" in the first seven weeks. To look at the rest of the niner's schedule, I'd say the game against GB is the toughest game of the next five. GB had a top three defense, before the vikes shredded them for 38 points (not sure they rank right now) and they have a decent offense. I definitely think the pack are at the top of the NFC WC picture, right there with the falcons, the giants and the cowboys. However, of those five teams, only the titans were a playoff team, either this year or last year, and, their win against the jags notwithstanding, tennessee has played pretty horribly this year. Here's what that five game sched doesn't show, though. It doesn't show the two "playoff teams" left on the niners schedule: the cardinals, and the eagles. It also doesn't show the two utter doormats left on the schedule: the rams and lions. If the niners are 7-7 after 15 weeks, they have an excellent shot at finishing 9-7. If they're 6-8 after 15 weeks, they have an excellent shot at finishing 8-8, you get the idea.

I think the defense is playing very well! I still think that the pass rush needs to improve and that yes, the next five games are winnable. The problem is the O. I don't care if you have the '85 Bears defense, if the O keeps 3 and outting they will wear down and get tired.

RE: The next 5 games are quite winnable
We passed the ball 70% of the time in this game. Raye was more than generous to Smith. Either Smith failed to get the job done or the OL failed to give Smith enough time. I remember once upon a time when Gore would get 13 carries and people would complain he's not getting it enough. He gets 13 carries today and everbody acts as if it was 13 carries too many. Have we suddenly idolized Al Davis and I wasn't notified? ****!! dea49 wrote: I agree with you to a point... The defense played exactly what the coaches wanted them to. RE: The next 5 games are quite winnable
good defense won this game. Colts
average defense lost this game. 49ers
bottom line
you cannot allow over 300 yards passing, zero turnovers, 33 minutes of possession, and allow 8 of 19 third downs to be converted and win.
the Colts defense didn't allow those numbers and they won.
it's that simple.
yes the Colts weren't super today, but they won because their defense did it's job. Had the 49ers done theirs, we would be 4-3 right now.
