Vernon Davis holding out for new contract?!?! Post Rating (1 vote)

Just reported by Matt Maiocco.

http://www.csnbayarea.com/49er...ks-new-contract

If true, pretty disappointing development.  Among all the other distractions, the last thing this team needs is one of their key contributors feeling disgruntled.

From a larger perspective, doesn't this situation highlight an inherent flaw in front-loading contracts?  Players sign a big deal, get the majority of money on the front end, then when the lean years start kicking in, they hold out for a new deal.  Seems like a bad situation to be in.

Re: Vernon Davis holding out for new contract?!?!

*sigh* yup. well he's given no indication he's going to hold out but it's clear he wants an extension if he's giving up $200K to sit out OTAs! it's a strange tactic IMO but I don't know what's happening behind the scenes. I know in today's world of sports it's 'every man for himself' when it comes to contracts. but there's only so much we can do under the cap.

one would hope this situation is resolved before too long. baalke and marathe have their work cut out for them this offseason between CK, davis, staley, boone, and the impending FA status of c-tree, iupati, and then aldon's situation.

Can't pay them all and last I looked VD is still under contract for another 2 yrs.  All that matters is he get his a** in camp when it's mandatory.

Vernon Davis is my favorite player.  However, the fact that he's holding out despite his 6 yr 46M contract being the 3rd highest AAV among TEs, makes me just want to trade him.  I'm very disappointed by this.

Usually I support players wanting to holdout, but when you're being fairly compensated I can't abide.  He signed a front loaded deal knowing that the last couple of years he would make less money.  Boone is a different story as he's clearly playing above his paycheck.

Also, apparently VD has let it be known he wanted a new contract as far back as February according Maiocco I think.  So just a surprise to the fans really.

First, his deal was 5 yr, $36 million, which is still a very nice contract, but not quite as big as your number.

Second, he's not holding out. He's skipping OTA's (voluntary workouts), which is entirely his prerogative and not in violation of his contract.

Third, he's not making 'less money' over the years. It's not unique to him that nearly all contracts are front-loaded due to the way NFL contracts are guaranteed. He had a signing-bonus that was pro-rated over the life of his deal, just as most players who sign new contracts have (that or roster bonuses that eat up cap space in earlier years on a contract).

Until we learn more, I think it's very early to speculate on what his motives are. I'm a little disappointed, too, but hardly to the point where I'm going to throw him out. Davis will be the 4th highest paid TE if/when Jimmy Graham gets his contract. Graham should get in the vicinity of Gronkowski ($9 million per) if not much more. With guys who've not had near his produciton, like Jared Cook and Marcedes Lewis, having cashed in on very similar contracts to his, I could see why he might feel he deserves a slight bump up in his salary. Not saying the 49ers should cave in, but he has been a very important part to the offense (the steady performer amidst the inconsistent production at the WR spot).

As I said in another thread, the challenge for the 49ers now will be how they compensate everybody. I think they will try to take a Patriots approach of not overpaying except for a few essential positions, but this is where the front office will earn their money in finding a way to keep as many people under the cap as possible while keeping those that remain happy.

It would be a huge mistake if we didn't give VD this contract. He is one of the team leaders.

Re: Vernon Davis holding out for new contract?!?!

Vernon already has a signed contract for the next two years.  He's only hurting his own bank account at this point. The Niner Brass are smart enough to ignore his contract talks at the time being.  If and when they feel they are ready to pursue a new deal then one will be made.  They simply can't have guys with unhappy contracts dictating terms or whining about new deals.  If so, what type of precedence would that set?  Pandora's box would be blown up..  VD needs to STFU, worry about catching and gaining positive yards especially against Cam Chancellor and the Seahawks, play out his contract he already has in place.  I'm so tired of reading and hearing about how unhappy he is.

this whole thing where he sold stock on his future earnings is turning him into a bit of an idiot. ok- maybe that's harsh.

but perhaps his shareholders are pressuring him into this. lol

We all love the guy from a playing perspective, but he's had his moments.  If Vance steps up, and VD holds out, that will lessen things.  The Front Office is really doing a fantastic jobs of lowering the importance of any one guy:

Iupati/Boone upset, go talk to Martin, Martin and Thomas
Gore getting old, see Lattimore AND Hyde
Crabtree wants to play tough, we have 4 guys in the wings.
DL guys getting old, we have how many (including Okoye) in the queue.
Smith is a risk, we have two guys who could step in.

None of these are perfect (even Vance), but the point is when you have a team, if you've got the right personnel, no one guy makes or breaks you.  We had only one guy in that mold--Kap.  That is now resolved.

Hopefully, they make peace with Davis and Boone, and have a little money left over for one of Iupati or Crabtree (I'd prefer the latter, since I think he is much more important given the depth at OL), but nice not to be biting your nails off waiting.

Re: Vernon Davis holding out for new contract?!?!

Davis isn't holding out, from what I can tell. Again, these are voluntary workouts right now. Him not attending is certainly sending a statement (and, despite this claim that it's about improving his brand, I think it's damaging it more than helping), but he has basically said he will be at the mandatory workouts because, in his words "they are mandatory."

Davis has had his moments of brilliance and had his moments of immaturity over the years. The good thing is that, so far, every questionable decision has typically been followed by a more mature, more focused, and more productive version of him shortly after. I actually met him last year at an event held in his art gallery (Gallery 85), and he was very polished, well spoken, and a far cry from the player who fumed off the field after Mike Singletary sent him to the showers.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt at this moment. I don't think his asking for a contract extension now will result in much, but I think he may understand that. We'll see how it plays out.

Re: Vernon Davis holding out for new contract?!?!

Let's not forget about Trey Millard, although he played FB in college he also can play TE and he would be just as explosive as Davis....Ok maybe that's a reach but he was a true 4 yr starter at OU.  Dude is a beast and we'll stash him away on the IR until next year while he rehabs his ACL.

Delanie Walker 2.0...watch out for this dude.

Re: Vernon Davis holding out for new contract?!?!

According to Kevin Lynch, free agent Kevin Greene (6'4", 255) looks very good at TE.  This is a surprise as he was a defensive star at Stanford, where he played in 53 games and tallied 229 tackles, 50.5 tackles for loss, 27.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and two interceptions for the Cardinal.   He apparently is very tough and a good blocker.  Here is his report:

"USC tight end Kevin Greene caught the ball effortlessly and looked elusive at 6-4, 255. Greene side-stepped a tackle from Borland in a pursuit drill. Greene was born in Oakland and played mainly basketball at Sacred-Heart Cathedral Prep in San Francisco. After gaining a BA in communications, Greene is now working on a Masters’ in communication management at USC. He certainly did not look like a offensive novice."

Sounds like a Bruce Miller, Demarcus Dobbs, or Will Tukuafu -- defensive players with athletic skills that translate to offense.

No rookie is a beast at this point.  In fact, from reading all the forums there are thousands of beasts in the league.

I think you're mixing up data on Chase Thomas with Kevin Greene. Greene, as the report (which we noted over a week ago, btw, in the 53 man roster thread) was a TE at USC. He never played for the Cardinal (Stanford). The stats you cited are for Chase Thomas, who was brought in to compete, presumably, at OLB. He replaced Morgan Breslin, the undrafted/FA from USC that was signed after this year's draft, on the 90 man squad.

Seems like Davis has fallen off the reservation again, LOL! His "brand"? What brand would that be? He is a TE in the NFL. We need Singletary back ASAP to slap the **** out of this guy. No doubt he is a great TE and one of the top 5 in the league (he is already being paid as such too so I don't see the complication), but the only "brand" players in the NFL are pretty much QBs (Manning, Brady, etc.). I never knew TEs were "brand" players.
