Re: Great Article on The Genius!

that is an AWESOME read roger, thanks for posting that. i wish you had warned me about the shorts montana was wearing in one of those pictures of walsh at practice though- LOL, my goodness how styles have changed!

but seriously, i've read stories on the 'walsh tapes' before but this is an outstanding writeup on it. an absolute treasure trove of walsh's wisdom all on tape. that shouldn't be in the HOF, it should be locked away in fort knox, only available to 49er coaches! lol

i really enjoy seeing his personality come through in those excerpts though and the confidence he instilled in his players. walsh had such an eye for detail- knowing every single aspect of every player's responsibilities on a given play and how they should execute with such precision. THAT was his true genius. it was a beautiful thing watching how harmoniously a walsh coached team played.

I haven't read the article yet, but the few clips I've seen of the Walsh tapes (assuming that refers to the tapes of him talking to the team in meetings) really show the sense of humor he had that belies the "dry academic" image many people have of him. I remember one clip about him telling the team to do what they had to do to be ready for an important game the next week, saying, "For some of you, that may mean lots of sex. For others, none at all" accompanied by the laughter of the team.
