2014 Free Agent QB's

Time to take a serious look at the future, Kaepernick may not be our future guys.  Can't waste too much time with the current team we have also.

Cutler or Vick?  I'm sure Vick has lost his job forever in Philly. Hoyer looked pretty good before he was hurt or maybe we package some of picks and draft one...This years draft will be loaded with good QB's.

a little too early to give up on kaep....

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Vick would get killed playing the pass rushes of St. Louis, Seattle, And Arizona.  At least we can put off the contract extension now.

It's never too early to look in the future, besides we still need a solid backup and who says a little competition isn't a good thing.   Keeps guys on their P's & Q's. wink

It is supposed to be a strong draft for WR and QB so I can easily see additions at those positions early in the draft.

Getting potent backup QB is the only thing I wholeheartedly agree on. Only so Harbaugh can give Kaep his legs back and not wet his pants every time CK takes off. At least presently, without the legs Kaep is  mediocre Alex Smith with a cannon arm. That in turn is currently obsolete because:

Still poor decision making with his secondary reads, especially under duress

Absolutely no one to throw to over the top, resulting in total distrust to throw long ball.

Here comes hesitancy, indecisiveness and often “deer in headlights” look.

Long way and lack of personnel from pure passer. And no legs to complement his arm that initially made him dangerous.
But to give up on him is way, way premature.

I think this thread is the forum equivalent of a passive aggressive tantrum. tongue

Kaepernick--great in his first 11 games, mediocre in his next 9. Clearly time to give up, especially when most coaches believe that you get your truest read on a quarterback's NFL future after he has 32 games (two full seasons) of starting under his belt.

It's fine to be frustrated, but let's not get too silly.

Sign up BJ Daniels to the practice squad. Not saying he is the answer, but still would like him given an opportunity to grow more.

Definitely

We've become a little spoiled.  I like that in a sense because it's better than when we pretty much sucked every year.

Kaep's play has regressed a lot and a fair amount of that is on him.  But I think we still need to remember that our offense often looked less than beautiful with Alex Smith at the helm too.  Much better than it does now, I'll admit.  But they still struggled to get things done even in 2011.  Or at least they struggled to finish drives in 2011, when David Akers set the NFL record for most field goals in a season.

I think part of Kaepernick's problem is he thinks he's got to do everything himself, especially when we are behind.  Add to that the fact he's had 1 WR he can trust this year and that's tough.

I'm not trying to make excuses for the mistakes he makes that are on him.  But I in no way think we should be looking for a new QB because our guy in his first full year as a starter with next to no one decent to throw too isn't fairing too well.

That said, I wouldn't object to drafting a QB or bringing in someone with potential or experience fairly cheap.  Vick and Cutler don't fit into that mindset.

I still want to see what happens when he has Crabtree, Boldin, Davis and Manningham to work with. If he sucks then, well, I might even hit the panic button.

Last year even when Kaep struggled at times picks or whatever he was still exciting to watch play. Not exciting this year aside from the GB game.

On Second & Third down defenses are playing more zone now to keep all eyes on Kap. On first down we are getting man coverage and we have to take advantage of that. Once Crab & Manny get to full speed we should ok.

Talk about bi-polar/fair-weather fans....don't we have another thread on here, proclaiming Kaeperick's infallibility?  Now we're already talking about replacing him  rolleyes
I think the reality is somewhere in the middle...

That said, I would like to draft a backup to groom to be a reliable #2, and not have to rely on McCoy or McBT.  Carr would be an interesting prospect in the 3rd-4th Round area.

I still think Kaep is our QB for the next 10 years but I agree we need to draft a QB that Harbaugh can develop into a solid backup. I thought Daniels was that guy.

Re: 2014 Free Agent QB's

BJ Daniels is available again, after Seattle released him to bring Okung back to their active roster. Ultimately, he's proven too much of a project for a team to carry him on their roster, but it might be a different issue after another off-season and training camp of work. I'd still like the 49ers to reacquire him, but I certainly wouldn't be against drafting another developmental quarterback. I probably wouldn't use a pick in the first four rounds, though.

Re: 2014 Free Agent QB's

Seriously?  Get rid of Kap for a FA?  That makes no sense.  I'm fine signing ol' BJ, as that allows us to get rid of McCoy and have someone who can play the same game.  As for a draft, that's fine too.  As for getting rid of Kap, before we do that (in addition to giving him good WRs), how about a game plan that doesn't have us running to the middle when they've stacked the line with 7+ guys. Horrible.

Kap needs to do better on his reads.  He also needs to be a bit more decisive.  I get that.  Frankly, some of that is on the OC for not letting him roll out, use his legs more, etc.  This is after all the same guy who blew up the Packers at the begining of the season.  The one other thing he needs to work on his touch passes.  The miss by Gore late  the game (could also have been a game breaker) was in part on Kap for throwing a laser.

Guys is a third year QB.  Give him time.
