So who else gets cut?

Posted: 11/01/2013 9:55 AM

So who else gets cut?

Chris Harper for Quinton Dial
Jermaine Cunningham for Tank Carradine
Marlon Moore for Aldon Smith
?? for Mario Manningham
?? for Eric Wright
?? for Nick Moody
?? for Michael Crabtree

I would say it's not looking good for Nnamdi and McLeod Bethel-Thompson for Mannigham and Wright. Still need two more. Who comes off for Moody? Dobbs who is a RFA next year? Dixon who is a UFA? Quinton Patton to IR or release one of Baldwin/Williams for Crabtree?

I think Patton goes to IR.
Nate Stupar
Nnamdi

You still have time to decide on what happens when Crabtree comes back.

Re: So who else gets cut?

Since Patton was apparently still in a walking boot last week, I'd say he's going to hit the IR. I'd guess Dobbs is also cut. They'll have a solid six-man line depth chart of McDonald/Dial/Smith backed up by Carradine/Dial/Tony Jerod-Eddie. Jerod-Eddie supposedly has the advantage on Dobbs because Dobbs can only play DE while TJE can play DE or NT.

I think guys like Dixon and Stupar will be kept around because of their work on excellent coverage units in addition to being able to play positions. Moody will hopefully improve that.

I agree with you that Asomugha and McBLT are likely cuts.

I feel bad for Nnamdi...intelligent, successful guy.  Great ambassador for Cal football.  He had a good NFL career but things are winding down for him now.

True dat...but he played for losing teams all those years and finally a shot at the playoffs but chances are it will be cut short.

Re: So who else gets cut?

I'd agree on the next two that seem likely:

Mario Manningham --> Quinton Patton to IR
Eric Wright --> Nnamdi Asomugha waived

After that, it gets murkier. Crabtree may not be officially back for 3-4 more weeks, so it may be premature to start assigning someone to pull for him. A lot can change (players can get injured, etc.) that might change who that player might be.

For Moody, I'd be inclined to say Bethel-Thompson, but, as Moody is primarily a ST contributor, it's not entirely out of the question that someone on the ST units could be moved to add Moody. The ST have been stellar, so I can see why they may not want to move a guy like, say, Bubba Ventrone, but it may come down to how much they value having a 3rd QB on the roster.

Re: So who else gets cut?

Patton to the IR for Manningham, Asomugha cut for Wright, Williams cut when Crabtree is back. I thought Asomugha would partly recapture the form that made him so valuable for the Raiders, I was wrong. When Crabtree is ready he will provide a HUGE UPGRADE over Williams and James should be the return man so I don't see us needing Williams. That leaves us with Boldin, Crabtree, Manningham, and Baldwin for the playoffs, not too shabby if healthy. Next season Patton should easily be able to replace what Williams can do plus I expect us to draft a WR early.

Re: So who else gets cut?

First two are easy. Candidates for Moody are:

Dobbs (UFA).  Really depends on how Tank plays and whether anyone else is hurt on the DL.  We learned in the playoffs our DBs are made by our DL.

Ventrone.  I agree our special teams are out of sight; the issue will be whether Moody > Ventrone.  If so, b/c Moody also plays ILB, maybe Ventrone is out.

Dixon:  See Ventrone.  If Dobbs can play FB behind Miller (which Dobbs might, given he is also a blocking TE for us), then it comes down to Moody > Dixon on ST.  Dixon was being shopped.

Agree on Crabtree but one thing to watch is how LMJ plays punt returner, etc.  Especially if Patton goes to IR, that means Williams is a key guy there.  BUT if LMJ takes that spot, I wonder if Williams is the guy let at that point.

RE: So who else gets cut?

yeah and let's not forget moody is an outstanding ST player himself, so I think it's quite possible maybe even likely one of those 2nd tier ST players gets cut.

Along with huge upgrade comes huge contract, right? I believe he's a free agent next year.

After next season, yes. So the 49ers will have him for a month (plus playoffs) this year and then (barring injury) all of next year, before they either have to commit a large salary or let him go.

Only one 1,000 yard season, no pro bowls, no all pro's, and coming off an bad injury. He will have to do quite a bit to get what he is probably going to want.

He will probably demand more than he is worth and even holdout or test the waters elsewhere. His "prima donna" attitude is what scares me. He as had it since we drafted him.
