Montana: All-time Overrated player

No, not trolling.  Saw this little gem of a post on NFL.com.  Lumping Montana with the likes of Barlow, Floyd, and Dexter Carter.....classic.   Pretty sure the guy is a Bengal fan.  What a clown.  LOL.

Too funny.....I'm sure he wrote this article just to drum up some interest during the down cycle of professional sports.  Not much going on nowadays   eek1

Exactly. A lot of columnists include outrageous propositions just to rile readers up and get them to spread the link and talk/argue about it.

Columnist trolling. tongue

Re: Montana: All-time Overrated player

I agree that this was likely done just to get more eyeballs and stir up debate, but that's pretty much what any columnist does. Some do it more deftly than others, but getting people talking is sort of the job of the columnist. This writer obviously lacks in subtlety.

As for the points he made about Montana, it's also not anything that hasn't been written before. He didn't say Montana was a bad QB, but his point was to talk about all the talent around him (a point people make repeatedly to try and ding him and Walsh). Same old debate rehashed for the purposes of this article.

Bottom line, I think it was a poorly conceived and written piece overall, but.. hey.. they need to write something during the slowest part of the football season.

Amazing that Elway somehow ends up on the Most Underrated side, really? If there ever was a QB like Farvre that was completely overrated it's Elway!

No other QB of that era is listed as overrated?

No mention of the fact that Montana's cool and accuracy made all the OTHER weapons around him better.

This guy is nothing more than a shock writer.

Yep, just stirring the pot.  Trying to believe his own peterking.gif.  Complete tool.  But he did succeed in getting me a little riled.

Jim Kelly had quite a bit of talent around him and he and the Bills just breezed through all those Super Bowls too.

Re: Montana: All-time Overrated player

What makes this column so ignorant is the fact that Joe Montana won two Super Bowls (81, 84 seasons) without Rice, Jones and Craig. What was this guy born in 1981?

RE: Montana: All-time Overrated player

yeah i read this yesterday. what a dumb writer this guy is. not to mention his logic is extremely flawed.

another one that jumped out at me was him calling william floyd overrated and then proceeding to compare his rushing stats to mike allstot's. how illogical and stupid is that? flloyd was never a featured ball carrier while allstot was. floyd was without questions one of the top FBs in the nfl (bar none) and was versatile if not an accomplished runner. he was a FB you moron and a really damn good one. i don't get that criticism by him.

What was amusing about that was that it was essentially reversed logic from his "underrated Rathman" argument. Rathman didn't pile up impressive stats but his value could be seen by his efforts within a very productive offense. William Floyd was part of a very productive offense but he didn't pule up impressive stats, so clearly overrated.

Granted, this doesn't have to be a contradiction; he could believe Rathman was one of the causes of that productive offense while Floyd wasn't. But with no analysis, just content-free assertions, it comes across as lacking consistency, IMO.

But this article was obviously not intended to make reasoned arguments for the sake of debate (as good columnists are capable of).

Good thing you did. Dea49 would have ripped your still-beating heart from your chest and shown it to you if you had completed that thought. tongue

My thoughts exactly. These guys writing this need to turn in their man cards and never write or talk about football again.

Speechless!

Joe Montana would be my #1 overall pick if I had to assemble an "All-Time" team.
No play is too big for Colin Kaepernick!!!
