AJ Jenkins bulking up

The skinny on A.J. Jenkins: The former first-round wide receiver isn't as skinny anymore.

That, of course, was the one concern general manager Trent Baalke raised on draft day last year. Circumstances -- injuries and otherwise -- prevented Jenkins from a full offseason in the weight room while at Illinois, and as a result his strength and power weren't ideal last year. Indeed the slender receiver, who is listed at 192 pounds, seemed to spend a lot of time on the ground during practices last year.

"If there's an area where A.J.'s got to get better in, it's called the weight room, and he will," Baalke said. "He's had some unfortunate situations that haven't allowed him to fully attack the weight room in the offseason. Once he gets in there and figures out how to be a pro receiver - which we're very confident we can help him along in that area - we feel we've got a very good player. A very good fit for this system."

Nothing inhibited Jenkins this offseason. He spent six weeks with quarterback Colin Kaepernick and fellow wideout Ricardo Lockette in Atlanta where they concentrated on strength and speed training. It remains to be seen whether that work will translate to the field, but recent photos of Jenkins show a more bulked-up receiver, and the reports from Atlanta were positive as well.

This is good news. Beyond normal "best shape of his life" off-season cliches, the biggest red flag for Jenkins was his size and strength. A wide receiver with little strength can't play on the outside, because they'll get jammed so effectively that they won't be able to get out into their routes. If Jenkins has actually become materially stronger, he does stand a chance of making an impact.

RE: AJ Jenkins bulking up

he strikes me as a kid who may not have the frame to be bulky but he could be wirey strong. it sounds like he's worked well in the weight room. i'll be curious to see how much weight he's put on and how much he's just strengthened his previous frame.

excited for OTAs and eventually training camp!

I just want to see Jenkins play.

He didn't get much playing time last season, and now with Mario and Kyle taking care of knee injuries, hopefully Jenkins can see some action on the field this year.

I also loved the Patton pick. great pick.

With pick No. 36 in the 2011 NFL, the San Francisco 49ers select...Colin Kaepernick, QB, Nevada

Kind of curious what he got his weight up to.  Not too worried.  I'll start worrying when AJ Jenkins wants to start his own music label!tongue

It seems like AJ Jenkins has the right attitude & approach to the off season.

Jenkins & Patton kind of give me that Antonio Freeman & Robert Brooks duo type of feeling.  I wish I could say Rice & Taylor!
No play is too big for Colin Kaepernick!!!

I would be very happy with a Freeman-Brooks type of duo.  Rice and Taylor type of duo's only come around once in a generation

According to Ancestry.com, there are three generations in century or roughly 33 years.  Rice was drafted in 1985, 28 years ago.  We are coming up on that generation mark tongue

Apparently, he's been working with Kaepernick and is being mentored by Boldin so if he doesn't contribute this season, I'd say it's all on him

Perfect, Joe Montana was drafted in 1978, CK in 2011.  My math tells me that is 33 years!  Montana needed an 11th round WR, a track star playing WR and a 10th round RB to win the 1981 Superbowl.  Steve Young was an anomaly.

By any chance Ricky Patton is related to Quinton Patton?  I guess that would have came out by now!

Back to AJ Jenkins, I still have high hopes for him.  He still has a chance to make his mark on the team and he seems determined.  As a fan, that's all I ask, for him to give his 100%.  Working with the QB is a great start.  Alex Smith had a hard time trusting Crabtree and it showed.

I think Jenkins & Lockette have a chance at making some noise this season working with CK in the off season.  Not a perfect science but I feel it counts for something.
