Dawson signs with the 49ers

This was kind of buried in the FA blotter and thought it would be a good topic to kind of single out from the 10 pages of banter.

Top kicker on the market coming to the Bay.  Nice move Baalke and staff!  They just keep making the non sexy moves but we are filling up a roster with quality players.

Wow.  A 38 year old kicker.  I guess we won't be drafting one now!

Re: Dawson signs with the 49ers

This seems somewhat akin to the David Akers signing, in that they're going with an older kicker with a long, relatively reliable history. The main difference is that Akers was coming off one of his worst seasons while Dawson is coming off one of his best, in which he was selected to the Pro Bowl.

Also of possible relevance: 49ers' special teams coordinator Brad Seely knows him well from his days as a Browns coach.

Edit: Correction--2010 wasn't one of Akers' worst years, I just recollected talk that he was let go because the Eagles felt he was in decline. But his numbers were in line with his better years and he made the Pro Bowl

I think the Seely connection coupled with "Phil Dawson, who thrived in a wind-swept, lakefront stadium in which his team so often failed, is no longer a Browns kicker."

While we're moving soon, that's not soon enough and who better to navigate windy terrain that someone who's already used to it.

I think they didn't want to settle on a rookie from the draft due to the amount of games that we lost last year because of poor kicking.  Do you think we still draft one??

It's even more impressive than that...the last two seasons:

Eric Branch ‏@Eric_Branch
Wow stat: Since 2011, Phil Dawson has made 14 of 15 FG attempts from 50-plus yards. #49ers

And that one that wasn't made was a blocked kick, not an inaccurate kick.

This guy is money. One of the top 5 kickers in all of football. Only question is how much longer he can do it. But there's plenty of precedent for kickers being effective in their late 30's and even early 40's. Love the move.

YES!   The draft is deep with kickers and although I don't believe we'll run with two on the active roster the draftee will be joining our practice squad. I watched the Brown's reality show last year and Phil is a standout guy and very well respected plus he was clutch for the Brownies for 14 years.  Solid pick up and a local fellow Texan, he went to a rival school of mines in Dallas.  biggrin

With this many picks, I'm sure we'll draft one way later and see how he develops.

Suffering and rejoicing 49er fan since '69!

I can't tell if this is a good signing until I go back and look at the film.

Oh God, bad flashback.

Re: Dawson signs with the 49ers

The only problem I have with this guy is that he's too good. The team depends on him to make those long FG's and miss the opportunity to go for it on 4th and 1 and miss out on some td's. All that aside he's the best in any condition. He even kicked a 48 yd. in a blizzard.

Re: Dawson signs with the 49ers

I think if Dustin Hopkins is available in the 7th when the Niners pick, I think the Niners pull the trigger.  Not sure if it would make sense to keep him on the PS.  I'm sure with in the next few years there will be another solid K that comes along.

There is only one kickier that got a lot of fanfare that I remember is Sebastian Janikowski.

Dawson is 27 for 29 from 40+ the past 2 seasons while Akers was 9 for 19 this past season.
Not sure what the $$$ look like but I am sure it is a reasonable one.

Edit:  I believe I have repeated some of the same sentiments as others.
I will learn to read first.  100 times on the blackboard!!!
No play is too big for Colin Kaepernick!!!

AP had the best quote ever from an athlete:

"even for an idiot like me it’s an easy decision" on why he signed with the 49ers
