Justin Smith's MRI- partially torn triceps tendon (update 12/27)
http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog...-status-unclearAll-Pro 49ers defensive tackle Justin Smith underwent an MRI examination on Monday, but coach Jim Harbaughsaid more will be known about Smith's availability in the coming days. "It's really going to be how he is today, tomorrow and Wednesday before we know anything," Harbaugh said a day after the 49ers defeated the New England Patriots 41-34 in a wild game Sunday night in Foxboro, Mass. Smith played fewer than half of the 49ers' defensive snaps after sustaining an undisclosed injury to his left arm. The 49ers reported it as an elbow injury. Team athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson wrapped Smith's left arm around the elbow, but Smith was unable to return to action. When asked if it's feared that Smith sustained a long-term injury similar to Parys Haralson, who is out with a torn triceps, Harbaugh said, "No, it seems to be two different things."

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
The one player I thought that could play forever at a high level just went down. The players we take for granted. Goes to show how important depth is.
The article mentioned that in Justin Smith's absence the Patriots scored 28 points which is the amount that was needed to tie the game up.
Knee jerk reaction: Should this concern me as a fan? OF COURSE!!! He is perhaps the best player on the defense and the most under rated player on the defense. I under estimated him a few years back.
Is RJF a good enough replacement? Not quite sure, 28 points is double what the Niners usually give up.
Knee jerk reaction con't: Again, should I be a concerned fan? OF COURSE!!! Does it feel like the end of the world? PRETTY DARN CLOSE!!! If it wasn't for the phrase: "Any given Sunday!" I would be in full "Doom & Gloom" mode. I am close to it and anyone with any positive angles, please post!
No play is to big for Colin Kaepernick!!!

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
From a transcript of today's (Monday's) press conference with Harbaugh: Do you have a sense of DT Justin Smith and how long he might be out? "Yeah, but it's really going to be how he is today, tomorrow, Wednesday, before we know anything."
Has he already gone through the MRI process? "Yes."
So it's not like a LB Parys Haralson thing where he's knocked out long-term? "No, seems to be two different things." It doesn't seem like the 49ers are going to lose Smith long-term but I guess his availability for the Seattle game is still up in the air.

RE: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
sit him...we don't need him to beat Seattle or Arizona.
Sit him and let him get ready to wreck havoc in the playoffs.
the funny thing is, when he's out, you can really tell the difference. lol

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
The fact that he's day-to-day at this point is a good thing. If the MRI revealed something bad, we'd know that already. Knowing the warrior that he is, my guess is we'll see him in the game against Seattle.
I'm not sure you rest him this week unless he just can't go. Seattle is playing really well right now and has one of the more noticeable home field advantages in football. It's going to take the 49ers best effort to win this game. And the difference between winning and losing this game is likely the difference between getting a bye and hosting Green Bay in the divisional round, versus playing a first round game and then traveling to Lambeau in the divisional round. Pretty big difference.
If Smith is able to contribute, I say play him. RJF is seviceable but they were a different defense without Justin.

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
If he can play, he should go against Seattle and help clinch the West, in the Hawks back yard . After that we should be able to handle Arizona without him. That will give him the last week of the season and WC weekend to rest up before our first playoff game.

RE: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
Update: www.csnbayarea.com/blog/matt-m...ee-justin-smithCoach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday morning on his KNBR radio show that he expects to see All-Pro defensive tackle Justin Smith back on the field shortly. Smith exited the game Sunday night against the New England Patriots with an undisclosed left arm or elbow injury in the third quarter of the 49ers' 41-34 victory in Foxboro, Mass. Harbaugh was vague Monday at his weekly press conference when asked about the severity of Smith's injury. On "The Murph & Mac Show," Harbaugh intimate that Smith's injury is not going to keep him out of the 49ers' lineup on a long-term basis. Smith underwent an MRI examination on Monday. "I expect we'll see 'The Cowboy,' " Harbaugh said, using Smith's nickname. "Knowing what I know of Justin Smith and the situation, yeah, I think the Cowboy will be around. The Cowboy will be saddled up. . . Ropin' and ridin' . . . "If it's humanly possible, the Cowboy will be out there ropin' and ridin'."

This is exactly what I figured. Soon as the MRI didn't rule him out, I figured he would go. CDC84 wrote: Update:

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
I just hope he doesn't re-aggravate it. But I assume if they let him play, it'll be because they're convinced that he can't make it worse, that it's just a question of dealing with pain.

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
Probably right. Plus, if they win on Sunday, he'd have basically 3 weeks to rest it if need be. Minstrel wrote: I just hope he doesn't re-aggravate it. But I assume if they let him play, it'll be because they're convinced that he can't make it worse, that it's just a question of dealing with pain.

i'm shocked that an open book like harbaugh is not disclosing more details on this injury!!! O_O
lol- guess we'll have to wait and see! i hope whatever it is exactly, smith is good to go and not risking a potentially more serious injury.

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
Wow, Justin Smith's injury MAY be more serious than expected.
From recent history, Harbaugh only holds information back. He doesn't give any type of misdirection in the media. I have a bad feeling about this one.
Anyone remembers what happened on the play that he was injured? I don't remember when he even came out.

So is it confirmed that he's out? Probably the single biggest loss the team could have right now outside of maybe Gore.

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
Harbaugh said he was probably going to be "questionable" in his press conference today. I doubt he'll play, though. Do you have an idea about DT Justin Smith? Has he been ruled?"Yeah, I think he'll be questionable for the game." Did he do anything today?"Yeah, he's done quite a bit." In what areas?"Rehab, strengthening, conditioning. Link

RE: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
yeah seems unlikely he'll play since he didn't really participate in practice. i'm just so curious what on earth the actual injury is. of course, all we'll get our of harbaugh is the usual "he's working through something". lol

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
Whatever it is, it must be fairly serious to keep him out. I heard a stat earlier that Smith has never missed a game in his life at any level.

RE: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
I'd rather rest justin this week. We have a decent backup and just have to hope that others step up. Having a healthy Justin in the postseason is the most important thing.

Re: Justin Smith's MRI - Status Still Unclear
Yeah, if he doesn't play today, he'll get three weeks off if the 49ers can win without him, two weeks off, if not. I think the 49ers can hold the fort for a short time without him and the key to winning a championship, over and above playoff seeding, is being at your best in the post-season.
