yup. big loss. he's apparently done for the year. i guess the only positive is that we're as deep at RB as anywhere. but he is a special player and will be missed. i would love to see james emerge as an occasional replacement for him as he has a similar skill set.

tavares gooden recently raved about how well james has been playing in practice so let's hope he can play a reliable role in games. can't imagine he'll get as many snaps as hunter with dixon and jacobs stepping in too. but he could possibly help offset kendal's loss.

get well soon hunter and williams!

The risk with players like James and Jenkins is similar to what we've discussed with Kaepernick. Inexperience can lead to inconsistent play, particularly when it comes to understanding the nuances of their assignments. Kaepernick has already demonstrated that he's ahead of the curve, although he's had a full year and a half of sitting and absorbing before he hit the big stage.

James might have break-away ability, but more important to his role, if he were to replace Hunter, would be his ability to understand his blocking assignments in passing situations, his ability to hold onto the ball to avoid critical turnovers (particularly when they are on their own end of the field). I honestly don't know that we'll see a ton of James. I think we'll see more of Dixon and possibly Jacobs before James hits the field. There might be a couple special packages where they run James out, but more than likely, Gore will have a slightly heavier load and then Dixon/Jacobs will vulture the other carries first.

It's too bad, too, because Hunter was really starting to show his ability to run between the tackles with authority. Last year, he didn't do it quite as effectively, but this year, he's been getting low and running downhill, while using his cutback ability effectively when he got to the second level.

I do think James' future remains bright as long as he continues to develop. He did show run between the tackles ability in college (moreso than Hunter), but he'll first need to take the step up to rotational back and prove his mettle before he gets any higher up the food chain.

it's actually a torn achilles. :(

crazy to have 2 serious season ending injuries on one seemingly harmless play. very unlucky.

you make good point pudding and that would be my main concern with james as well- blitz pickup/blocking assignments.

fortunately our rookies have had more time than most to work in the classroom and be coached up and weren't forced right into the mix. but still- there is a learning curve. hopefully if pressed into action, they answer the call and the dropoff is minimal.

It sucks to lose Hunter, but as long as Gore doesn't get hurt, we should be ok. Hopefully Hunter can be back at 100% for next season. It will be interesting and exciting to see who gets the carries that were going to Hunter. I feel good about both Jacobs and James getting playing time.

quest..

You're going to see Dixon before James and Jacobs. Just saying. Dixon is next in line on the depth chart, and has been getting at least some spot carries and plays throughout the year. Jacobs has two plays under his belt, albeit he is a veteran.

yeah i am curious to see how the carries are split going forward. it's very possible to see dixon a fair bit and jacobs even more. if we're looking for a quicker RB on a 3rd down, for example, we could maybe look to james.

i think each guy's role/reps could change with hunter's loss.

I just hope we get to see James get five snaps a game. He could be that secret weapon that gets unveiled in the playoffs.

i think we could. probably won't get all the snaps hunter did but i think it's quite possible- IF the coaches feel he's ready.

FWIW, i thought it was particularly interesting that ANTHONY DIXON has endorsed james, a guy who could take snaps from HIM! he said yesterday that he's a big playmaker and has been looking great. tavares gooden was another guy who was raving about him the other day.

the real test will come in live action but these are positive things to hear. he is a very dynamic talent.

Harbaugh has certainly sold these players on the team game. Dixon will get his opportunity whether it be with the 49ers or elsewhere. I really do believe that every single player on this squad just wants to win.

I should correct my earlier comment a bit, too. Dixon is actually listed as a FB, not a HB. He's been used as a HB when he's gotten carries, but his actual depth chart position could open a slightly bigger crack for James than if he were directly ahead of James on the roster.

RE: How long is Hunter going to be out....

"I expect dynamic plays, man," Dixon said. "I watch him every day on the practice field, and he's making plays, going up to get the ball. They have him doing Percy Harvin stuff when we're playing teams like that, and he really is a great talent. I feel like he's going to come in and make plays. I know he's hungry. He hasn't got the chance to really get his feet wet yet, so I know he'll come in with the hunger. I expect a lot of great plays out of him."

Harvin, of course, plays for the Minnesota Vikings, who have used him as a wideout, out of the backfield and on special teams as a returner. James has the kind of physical skills to make the most of such opportunities...."

It would be awesome to have a Sproles/Harvin type of weapon. I bet the 49ers staff have been dying to see what Jenkins/James could do on the field on gameday.

I'd rather see James get a shot than see more snaps for Dixon.  We don't know how well James can handle all the aspects of the job (pass-blocking, ball security, etc.), but he is cetainly a home run threat.  You know what you're gonna get from Dixon, but it's definitely a lower ceiling.
