Let the QB Controversy BEGIN! Post Rating (1 vote)

Kaep is playing lights out. Do you think Alex Smith is capable of playing like Kaep is right now? Then again Kaep's deficiencies like reading a defense and forcing passes will eventually show through. Who do you want?

Alex Smith is the starting QB for the rest of this year barring injury.

Smith will be traded in the offseason though.

I wonder if we trade kaepernick in the off season while his value is so high, he probably has a higher ceiling then any qb coming out this year.
Even sliced bread knows Myles Jack is the greatest thing since, ever.

You do not trade Kaep! No way no how. Do any NFL team need a qb right now? Alex may just sit behind Kaep until his contract run out.

We are a BASEBALL school now...

Yes Kaep did play well.  But with the exception of two or three plays where he used his legs to get out of trouble, he didn't do anything spectacular IMHO.  Some of the balls he threw were low and were great plays by our receivers.  The deep balls he threw were for the most part, open easy passes.  If Alex were in the game and the same coverage was there all game, I believe he would have had the same stats.  The Bears D was confused all game.  The play action really exploited the secondary and left Kaep some pretty easy throws down field.

I think Alex can play at the same level.

It's obvious the play calling was far more open for CK and I believe they did it because they really had nothing to lose. Either we were going to light it up or go down in flames, obviously the only flame out was the bears. Our receivers also made some great plays that kept drives alive and the bears did nothing to challenge us at all.

BTW: This is the first game this year I have seen the defense play to the level they did last year.

No, he won't be traded. If CK is the starter next year, then Alex will be a very smart, capable backup. It would be foolish to trade him with such a cap friendly salary. Only a true blind hater would still want to dump him.

It's way too early to tell if CK is ready for the full time starter job but it's obvious some day he should.

Some of Kaep's throws were special. They were the kind of passes Alex Smith would refuse to throw. The corner route to Vernon at the beginning of the game and the sail route to Kyle Williams comes to mind. However if Kaep keeps attempting those throws he will eventually throw picks. Something to consider...

RE: Let the QB Controversy BEGIN!

i like what i saw with kaep, but id still stick with smith, bec its not like he was playing crappy this season. take note that this was kaep's first game, nfl coaches dont have a lot of film on him, so i think it's a knee jerk reaction to bench the starter right away. but you have to be excited about the potential of kaep, didnt wilt under the pressure of playing against a good chicago defense on primetime. and this is also the first time that a real threat is gunning for smith's job, so this is probably going to push him to really strive for excellence. all in all, this is a good problem to have lol.

Smith is our starter when healthy, end of story. CK is still the future, really nothing has changed.

Re: Let the QB Controversy BEGIN!

The team has the 2nd best record in the NFC, and would have an even better record had Smith not gotten hurt. You can't make a change at this point. If the team starts going down the drain it's a different story.

Re: Let the QB Controversy BEGIN!

Before we get too excited, just remember that Troy Smith had back to back 100+ QB rating games a few years ago and looked great. Then he went back to being crap.

There really is no QB controversy IMO. If Alex is healthy enough, you start Alex. The guy has shown nothing to bench him in the past 2 seasons (Talking about hot QBs, the guy has completed 26 of his last 28 attempts, plus 4 TDs and no INTs). Yes CK had a great game against the Bears, but he is still the backup.

Also if the 49ers win the Super Bowl this year with Alex, no way are they letting him go which is fine by me. If anything CK proved we have depth at QB and I would love to have that for a while.

RE: Let the QB Controversy BEGIN!

harbaugh may disagree with you guys. after the game when asked if CK was now the starter, harbaugh said he tended to go with the hot hand, and he has 2 QBs with hot hands right now. what does that tell me? that he is at least seriously considering it.

he had every chance to deflect that question or even go further and reiterate that smith is his guy when healthy. what he'll say today, we don't know. but IMO it shows what his thinking is- CK has all the tools to lead his offense in a way that surpasses smith's ability- who has played pretty damn good for a year+. having now seen CK perform on the big stage against a top flight defense, harbaugh has to seriously consider if he does go with the young buck.

this is more than simply a case of going with the hot hand. if it was troy smith we were talking about, then perhaps. but this is also a case of a QB who he is enamored with and who he hand picked to groom as his QB of the future, having an outstanding performance.

no doubt- he has to prove himself more than just one game. but this has been 1 year + in the making and he has at least played a fair amount this season- maybe not a lot of snaps but enough to instill confidence in his coach.

i fully expect CK to start against the saints. and i think that while smith has done a fantastic job leading a winning team, CK most definitely can take us to an even higher level if he can remain smart with the football. we have a much more potent and open passing offense with him in there, not to even mention his threat to scramble.

and unfortunately for alex, CK doesn't have the mental baggage alex has. smith has shown INCREDIBLE mental toughness but there's no doubt he still has scars from his past. he has been smart with the ball, for sure. but at times i think he's been too unsure of himself and hesitated to make throws out of fear of throwing another INT. i don't want a completely carefree gunslinger. but you need a QB who trusts his ability enough to let it loose. there can be a balance and perhaps CK can lead towards that and perhaps smith ends up leaning a bit too much to the conservative side for this offense to go to the next step.

all i'm saying, is this is a real issue and i would not dismiss CK as our potential starter. he's likely to play in NO which will be incredibly tough. but beyond that, we may have seen the beginning of the end of smith's hold on the starting position.

I was going to say the same. I think the postgame with Vernon was telling. The players probably want Kapernick to play. They all love Smith but the physical tools are in Kapernick s favor.

I feel bad for Smith. He was on his way to a great season and I still believe the best long term solution would be for Smith to play this year and get traded for a second rounder prior to the draft.

If a healthy Smith is benched, that would be a first maybe in NFL history. One of the top 3 rated QBs in the NFL, who has also been the 2nd most winning QB in the NFL over the last 2 seasons, getting benched because of one good night by his backup? That would be a very questionable call on Harbaugh's part.

Not to mention Smith is 26 for his last 28. People seem to forget that Smith only played poorly after hurting his finger. He was throwing the ball downfield more as of late. You can't just bench Smith at this point. Next year you hand the keys to Kapernick.

If Smith wins a Super Bowl, you can't even do that.

Oh and I don't want to call what CK did fools gold, but even I could have had a good game against the Bears with the protection they gave him. Hell Smith could have very well thrown a perfect game with that type of protection. It was the best our OL has played all year. I think they got to CK once and after/before that, they didn't land a finger on him.

I think they should trade Smith because they have a capable replacement and WE NEED TO KEEP BOWMAN. I have always been one of Alex's biggest supporters so that comment about me being a Smith hater was ridiculous. You have to be able to see that Kapernick has the potential to be a top flight QB.

Bowman isn't a FA until 2014. The FAs we need to sign next year is Goldson and Sopoaga. Alex's contract really has no baring. He was getting paid 5 million a year, with an additional 5 million if he met incentives. That is a bargain for the output we are getting. I think CK needs at least one more year of grooming. Also if Alex wins a Super Bowl, there is no way he will be traded. That would just be outright dumb on the 49ers part. He isn't Trent Dilfer, with a 75 QB rating. He is one of the top 5 QBs in the league right now looking at his wins and stats. You don't just dismiss some one like that, especially with the type of bargain contract he has.

Who called you a hater by the way?

RE: Let the QB Controversy BEGIN!

Dea made a comment about it. I would hope at this point there are no "haters" anymore. Smith has proven to be a damn good QB.

While its unlikely to happen I think its possible that Smith is traded after a SB (if he doesn't play especially well). Its clear that Harbuagh just loves Kaep. There is no way around that and the keys to the ship are with him.

RE: Let the QB Controversy BEGIN! Post Rating (1 vote)

smith simply does not make the throws that CK makes. who knows how he might have done agaisnt the bears- no doubt he's played really well lately and the last year +. but it's quite clear to me that CK is starting down a path that will have him steal alex's job.

there are no limitations to our offense with him in there whereas i think there are some things we don't do with alex or that alex is not as confident in doing. CK has no such limitations.

whether he can keep making good sound decisions as defenses gameplan against him and throw different coverages at him, remains to be seen. but i don't think it's crazy at all to say that he could be surpassing alex, even with alex having one of the most efficient seasons in a long time. CK seems to create opportunities or provide ones that alex shies from.

i think that's part of the excitement from his receivers- they're used to a much more conservative approach and hesitancy at times to throw them open. CK had a great balance of aggression and sensible decision making last night. that's what we need from our QB and as good and efficient as alex is, i think in some situations he leans too much to the conservative side, to the point of not trusting his instincts and what he sees out there. sometimes you've got to see it and let it loose, not wait and hesitate and take a sack or throw too late.

anyway i'm starting to sound like i'm trashing smith and annointing CK. i'm not. but i'm just saying that harbaugh knows his QBs and the fact that he's willing to entertain the possibility of CK staying in leads me to believe he shares some of my opinions on the matter. it's more than simply going with 'the hot hand' IMO.
