Hopefully, Kaepernick has gotten plenty of reps this week with the first team offense. He'll really need to be prepared to make solid decisions against a Bears team that has been generating turnovers at a rather absurd clip.

That said, if Kaepernick plays well against a defense of this caliber, that'll be extremely promising about his future. I think, though, I'd now make the 49ers underdogs for this game.

This is going to be a very interesting & revealing game to say the least...
While I'm not an Alex lover, I do think he gives us the best chance to win and his understanding of the system is his best attribute.  We'll see how far along Kaep is in this development & his grasp of the offense after two solid years under it.  Hopefully, he did get plenty of significant reps this week!

RE: Alex Smith ruled out Monday Night

yeah all we were hearing was how likely it was that he WOULD play (with the disclaimer that he hadn't been cleared officially). so my concern is that perhaps kap hasn't had as many reps with the first unti as you'd like, considering it seemed smith was likely to be able to start.

in any case, i was thinking how it might be best to hold smith out anyway. there's no point going against a tough D like that in your first action since the concussion. he's very vulnerable right now and the last thing we need is another concussion which could put his season if not his career in jeopardy- back to back concussions in a short time span are very, very serious!

hopefully smith comes around and is back to his normal self very soon. i do have concern in him coming back IN new orleans though. i guess no game is an easy 'comeback' game, but that's a hell of an environment to play in too. we need our passing game to be in top form as an overly conservative gameplan- which i would anticipate if he's coming back then- will surely fail against them IMO.

i have to admit i am excited to see CK get a shot though. i'm nervous too as he's going against an incredibly physical, tough, experienced, and turnover-inciting defense. but it's a chance to see where he is at.

looking forward to kickoff!!!

Re: Alex Smith ruled out Monday Night

I'm hoping that Kap actually got tons of reps this week with the starters, and perhaps the niners knew all along that Smith wouldn't play.  I'm hoping the reports leading up to today that Smith was "likely" to play was a ploy by Harbaugh to have Chicago prep more for Smith than Kap.  I know it sounds like a stretch, but you never know.  Harbaugh is all about game-planning.

Let's go Niners!  Wish Smith was playing tonight but will be cheering on Kap to do his best :)

Surprising, it seemed as though Smith was on track to play. IMO this evens the playing field after it appeared the 49ers would be the only team without their starting QB. I hope Harbaugh and Roman drew up one hell of a game plan on offense, because we are going to need it. It also might not be a bad idea to have Jacobs 49ers debut, for some tough running short yardage situations.

My two favorite teams are the 49ers and whoever is playing Seattle.

Hope CK is up to reading the Bears defense as they disguise their defense as good as we do, gonna be a tough game for him. On the other hand I believe that most of the Int's the Bears have made have been made on outside, this may open up deep middle of the field throws for CK. I just know I would be more comfortable with Smith in there as he can read defenses a lot better.  Gonna be a hell of a game.

A baptism of fire... going up against a Damn tough d on Monday night... if he pulls through this then I think we can rest easy with the view that our future at that position is solid.. I want to see him play like a Qb and show the command needed... Goodluck to him!

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

I like Steve young's advice to kaep. When in doubt, run. And hopefully with two hands on the ball. This bears defense is very good. They are better than the 49ers so far in that they force turnovers at a rate similar to last years 49er team. If Kaep can minimize turnovers, the niners have a very good chance of winning tonight

Re: Alex Smith ruled out Monday Night

The prep for the Bears must have been top notch because after the game CK was saying how they knew exactly what the Bears were going to do and they didn't do anything different to really rattle the young QB. You would think the Bears defense would have mixed it up, but they didn't for some reason.

Of course our defense also just murdered the Bears. I don't care if Cutler would have been the QB, the result would have been the same if Cutler was on his back all night.

I truly beleive that it was known Alex was going to be out, and used it to have the bears focus on Smith. Everything out there was Alex is Unofficially going to start, just seemed a little fishy to me. Glad he played well though, we shall see what this does from here on out
