Robin Cole #56 played LB for twelve seasons for the Steelers. Though he played with many great Pittsburgh linebackers, he is considered one of the best from his peers.

Yes! The Lost Boys, one of the classics. I'd be worried if I were around Jamie Gertz, cause I'd get a boner.

I saw an episode of this show. Edgar Frog was back on set for Lost Boys 2 with The Two Coreys, good episode as Corey Haim didn't know his microphone was on and did a line of coke.

Taking the kids to Santa Cruz next weekend, my sister is flying out with her kids from Virginia.

I figured I'd take them (Sister and her kids) to see the setting of the greatest movie ever made, ride the rides, eat some Clam Chowda, and teach the kids how to body board.

Santa Cruz is probably my favorite city..  I say that only having visited it a half-dozen times, but there's something about it.  Really enjoyed the times there and wanted to move there at one point.

Hope you and the fam have a blast.

RE: Hey Nate

You a Norcal or SoCal or were you a Banana Slug?  We go once a summer, we usually do SC in June and Monterey in August, but since they were coming out I postponed SC for them.

I like Monterey more, mostly because the Monterey Cypress is one of my favorite trees.

We did Stinson/Bolinas on July 4th, Tobi caught his first Shark, I was hoping for some Rays, but tide was coming in.

Morro Bay is nice too...I hope to visit Santa Barbara, but I think Stckyfingers still has a restraining order out on me...He's so handsome.

Just a East Coaster transplant during the 90s tech boom.  Went up to SC to get away.. the trip from highway 1 or 280 was awesome.  I miss the area a lot.

My wife was born in Saugus (Santa Clarita) but wasn't there too long - they moved around a lot.  About 10 years ago, she went to Monterey on business.  She still talks about that trip and how pretty the bay and area is.  Makes me want to get out and see it with my own eyes one day.

BTW - what the heck do you do with Rays?  Just fun to catch or do you eat them?  Over here on the other coast, we tend to dump rays as a pain in the behind although I've known a few people who eat them.  I know lots about prepping fish for dinner, but nothing about rays.

We toss them back, but some restaurants and fishermen use a hollow pipe to punch through the wings then they slice it and use it as a Scallops substitute.

toss 'em back is what we do.  I knew about the so-called sea scallops scam - some restaurants used do it on the east coast and put it on the menu as "sea scallops".  I've seen both side by side and there is a texture difference.  I know a few got nailed for it years ago, but I don't know if its commonly practiced anymore.  Believe it or not, there are very few good seafood joints in my area - I am just about 2 hours from Cape Fear and a hair over 3 hours to Whalebone Junction on the Outer Banks.  I can get good seafood on the coast but I guess I am just too far in-land for the real deal here  .

So, I guess I lied - I did know something about them.  I've never actually tried to do it myself though.  Damned things remind me too much of politicians - faceless bottom feeders.  (crap, sorry - wrong forum for that kind of comment).

Never tried it either.  The Sharks we cut into steaks and BBQ them, they have a minimum of 3' and Tobi's was closer to 2', too small by law, and really too small in general.  I usually won't keep them unless they are 4'+, otherwise they're too skinny IMO.

As for Monterey.  These views are why I love it...

RE: Hey Nate

Definitely some nice views - I can see why folks love it so much.

I haven't done much shark fishing.  Its frowned upon near the shore (most piers won't let you do it) - illegal in many places.  I don't know why - some whinny complaint about attracting sharks near the swimmers.  That isn't to say you don't catch them - you just can't use chum.  You can do it on boats off shore, of course.  But I figure if I am going to pay for an off shore boat, I am going for the Jacks, Yellow fin, billfish, etc.  I suspect shark fishing would be some good fun though.  I'll have to try it sometime.

RE: Hey Nate

We Shark fish in Bolinas, CA or Bolinas lagoon to be more specific, ever listen to Primus?  The song "Fish On" mentions Bolinas Lagoon.  Anyways, no swimmers in the area, to muddy and shallow, it's only 1' deep in the flats and the channels that run through are about 4' deep at high tide.  Low tide is the best because you can watch the current of the channels and aim for them, the Sharks and Rays stay in the channels which are only about 6-7' wide.

We use Squid for the Rays and Midshipman for the Sharks...Must be careful though, Midshipman are fairly poisonous.  25lb test with 60lb 4' steel leaders with 10/0 Gamakatsu Nautilus, slider with a 12-14oz ball weight.   Don't forget to set your drag.

The bait slides up the leader when the hook gets set, I've used one Midshipman to catch as many as 6 separate Sharks.

RE: Hey Nate

Man, that sounds fantastic.  If my wife and I ever get out there like she wants, I'm bringing fishing gear.

What you call Midshipmen, we call toadfish.  We used to fish from the Oregon Inlet Bridge over Oregon Inlet on the Outer Banks of NC (the OBX are barrier islands just off the coast.

Anyway, there is a catwalk under the bridge that you would access from the southside of the bridge - we used to do a lot of trout fishing from there.  You would catch a lot of toadfish.  A family friend first took me out there - I must have been about 10 - he would chuck the toadfish up on the road.  Cars would come and pop them like little balloons.  It was pretty cruel and wasteful.  I haven't fished the catwalk in 10 years - hell, it may be closed for all I know.   These days I fish that beach you see in the picture above - the inlet connects the sound side of the island to the open ocean.  You can drive your truck right out on that beach and down under the bridge if you want.  I have had great fourtunes out there.  Sadly, I hear they closed the beach to 4WD this year.  I was out last Turkeyday but not since.   Don't know if that is permanent or termporary closure.
