Do You Think the Eagles Plan to Deal McNabb This Off-Season?

Do You Think the Eagles Plan to Deal McNabb This Off-Season?

I was thinking about it. There is no way in hell they want him to hit free agency. He could land with anybody in the conference or even the division... They would most likely want a hand in what team he goes to...not only only to lessen the chances we see him in the post-season but to also get some kind of compensation. With only two seasons left on McNabb's current contract (this one and next one)...the Eagles would have to make the move this off-season. They drafted Kolb for a reason and our opinion of him right now is irrelevant but he hasn't really done anything to say that he's not ready for the job... The New Era could really be closer than we think.

I said it earlier this season that if our FO think Kolb is ready and unless McNabb is winning the super bowl or at least play his best football in many years I think we will trade him.

Reasons:

1. we believe we have his replacement on the roster in Kolb

2. McNabbs age and health

3. the ridicules price the Bears gave for Cutler is promising a big trade even for an older QB like McNabb

But this its a dangerous week to bring it up right after McNab played so well biggrin

Re: Do You Think the Eagles Plan to Deal McNabb This Off-Season?

I want to start this by saying that it's not something I support or that I am against...I'm just looking at the big picture.

In 2007, the Eagles use their first pick in the draft to select Kevin Kolb...a quarterback from Houston. You don't use a pick this high on a back-up or a guy that you plan to develop and trade away. You use a pick this high on a guy you want to be able start eventually...this is true for any position.

Can you believe the talk that went on in the War Room that day? Andy, Heckertt, Morninwheg, Mr. Lurie...all talking about this move. The fact that they went into that day with Kevin Kolb being their #1 target...can you fathom the conviction they must've had to make that move?

There was a plan then and there is a plan now.

I highly doubt the Eagles will allow Donovan to hit the open market. Not only could he pull a Favre and sign with a team like Washington but it would also leave the Eagles uncompensated for a player they most likely could have gotten a good deal of draft picks for.

The only other option I see here is that they put the franchise tag on McNabb and put him on the trade block for another team to re-sign. Kind of what the Patriots did with Matt Cassel. But this would have to come at the same time that they would extend Kolb's contract so a lot of their money during the free agency period would be tied up into two positions.

The Eagles are exteremly young on offense...when Westbrook and McNabb were both injured and unable to play against Kansas City, there was not one time at any period of that game where a player was over the age of 29 on offense was on the field at any time. The Eagles are ready to move into the next era.

Which may shed a new light on the Michael Vick's situation. When we brought him in, Reid said that Vick first needs to re-learn the quarterback position in this offense.

Why?

So he can run the option? So he can throw the 2 passes he has thrown in meaningful time? Or would it be to provide veteran depth for Kevin Kolb in 2010 and this 'Spread Eagle" is just Andy's way of getting a guy with talent's beyond most  #3 quarterbacks in the league on the field?

Since Kolb's performance in Kansas City, Reid has not called on him to throw a pass in any other game. Not even in trash time. With every opportunity being a test for Kolb and how he handles those tests being vital tools to better grade him, does the fact that Reid didn't call on him and instead called on Vick to run the offense in trash time VS. the Bucs and Giants mean that Reid has seen enough and has made up his mind? Now that he knows his youngster is ready, now it's time to get Vick's legs underneath him?

We did, so it is our call when ever he stay or go, we also signed Westbrook to a extension, if he dont get it going and stay healthy he could be gone too, I think this is about what could happen, after all Dawkins is in Denver.

Re: Do You Think the Eagles Plan to Deal McNabb This Off-Season?

I'm of two minds about this one.  The Kolb pick looks to have turned out to be a good one (I find myself recanting to Bobby Hoying comments that I posted on this forum ahile ago).  Four scenarios:

A. Donovan finishes his two year contract, gets extended, and Kolb gets traded/released- 15% chance

B. Donovan finishes his contract and is not re-signed- 0% chance

C. Donovan is traded on draft day to say, the Raiders- 40%

D. Kolb is traded on draft day- 25%

It's so difficult to tell which direction that AR/FO are going with this but I thought the comments that Donovan made after signing the extension really pointed to the direction that the Eagles were going.  He kept repeating "we have two years to win the SB."  I think that subtle hints were given from AR that if he didn't win it in those years that the Eagles were going in a different direction.  But that also fails to support a trade in the off season.  Confusing stuff for sure.

If the FO has confidence in Kolb, I will too. I love DMac. I would hate to see him go. But if it's for the good of the team, we have to move him or lose him.

Yes, McNabb is as good as gone.   Kolb is the man going forward.   You wont hear much from our FO on it though as they will obv want to maximize what they can get in return.

I think McNabb has to win a Super Bowl to have any future here after this season IMO.

I couldn't agree anymore.

It's the only thing that is missing.

The same number of NFC title games and Pro bowls that adorns his jersey is nice but, the big trophy is still missing and, you KNOW who takes the blame for never winning it...yep...

Re: Do You Think the Eagles Plan to Deal McNabb This Off-Season?

At the 2007 draft they hadn't yet been to another NFC Championship but they had been witness to more McNabb injury. The story is different now.

You don't get too attached to the draft in this league or it'll break you.

Kolb will likely demand either the starting job or a trade. So it depends on what McNabb does this year. The pressure is on McNabb to win a Super Bowl. If he hits the playoffs and throws up 3 INTs or 2 fumbles he's done, he's traded. He wins a Super Bowl, and the Eagles will try to get Kolb to stick around for one more year.

First I would say I really like McNabb, but I also believe in getting younger. I like most of your opinions because after the Chiefs game I posted that I thought McNabb would have to winn a SB or at least play really great this  year to stay, else we would trade him after this season, I took a lot beating for that back then so I find it a little nice that most of you agree with me now biggrin Its just Eagles way of football we dont keep old players and thats why we sometimes watch a player we really like move on, but IMO its also the reason we have been a contender for nearly 10 years now and sooner or later we should be a winner too.

I think McNabb still has 3-5 very good years in him.  He's a top 10 quarterback.  I think we kind of get spoiled since he's been so consistant over the years.

McNabb will be 33 in a couple of weeks.  He is injury prone, at least with respect to playing all 16 games a year.  While he is still a very dangerous passer, he is also inconsistant.  His trade value will be as a back-up quarterback, not a starter.

Re: Do You Think the Eagles Plan to Deal McNabb This Off-Season?

In 2007 when we drafted Kevin Kolb we had just finished a season where we went to the divisional round of the playoffs on the road to New Orleans....with a 37 year old back-up.

I think the Eagles know that they be a contenders with a quarterback not named McNabb and how to handle the situation when it arises...I also think that they know that they can become contenders longer if the young quarterback gets opportunities to grow. If McNabb is here, he doesn't grow and we're back on the market looking for McNabb's replacement 3 years from now....

Kolb could step in next season and the transition would be easier...everyone on this offense is young. It's not like these guys have been in this organization for such a long time that seeing anyone other than Donovan would be weird to them...the team needs to be able to respond to Kolb as the leader...the longer McNabb is here, the more time there is for it to get burned into these guy's heads that it's McNabb's team making it harder for them to adjust.

And yet the whole thread is based upon the Eagles getting younger, and trading McNabb.  I guess you think only the Eagles think about getting younger.

there's no such thing as 'inconsistant' or 'consistant.'
