A Few Observations

I keep reading opinions for and against keeping Nick Foles on this team.
Claims that he just doesn't fit into Chip Kelly's style. That Mike Vick, or Dennis Dixon, or E.J. Manuel, etc... would be much better suited.
Chip Kelly's requirements for a QB are, make quick reads, get rid of the ball quickly (1.5 sec), avoid turnovers, and sacks (sacks are always the QB's fault according to Kelly). The QB should let things happen, not make things happen, according to Kelly.
Which of those requirements even remotely describes Mike Vick as qualified?
The only thing that Mike Vick did better than Foles last year was run faster. Unfortunately the Eagles are not a track team. They're a football team.
Excuses that it was all the fault of the OL fall apart when you consider that the 2011 OL was pretty good and Vick still sucked. And Foles played behind an even worse OL than Vick started the year with. Without Shady, DJax, and Maclin for some or all of his starts.
Then there's the claim that he's not very good because his record was 1-5. Vick lost the last 6 games that he started, and only won the ones he did because our D was playing a lot better before Juan was fired, it's not like he was lighting up the scoreboard.
Dallas was 1-15 in Troy Aikman's first year, and it was Steve Walsh who won the only game (Aikman was injured). Wonder how many SB wins the Cowboys would have now if they cut or traded him as a bust?
Eli Manning started 7 games in his first season he was 1-6 and looked so bad against Baltimore that he was benched for Kurt Warner. Manning ended the day with a passer rating of 0. Wonder what would've happened with the Giants last 2 SB wins if they cut or traded him as a bust?
They emphasize that he was only a third round pick. Like that's a strike against him. Ridiculous. Here are some of the other QB's who were picked in the third round or later. Tom Brady was a sixth rounder. Kurt Warner, Jeff Garcia and Tony Romo were all undrafted. Kenny Anderson was a third rounder. Joe Theisman went in the fourth. Daryle Lamonica went in the twenty fourth round of the AFL draft. Dan Fouts, another third round pick. Norm Van Brocklin was a fourth rounder. Fran Tarkenton- third round. Joe Montana- third. Bart Starr- seventeenth round. Roger Staubach- tenth round. Johnny Unitas- ninth round.
As for Dennis Dixon, I can understand the reasoning behind signing him. He played for Kelly in college but hasn't shown much of anything after 5 years in the NFL, much like Casey Matthews, the other guy who played for Chip Kelly on the roster. Foles already has more game experience and better stats than Dixon.
E.J. Manuel is apparently a Vick clone. A lot of physical positives, a lot of mental negatives.
I'm fed up with all the "mobile" "athletic" QB's that the Eagles have fallen in love with anyway. Other fans get the Bradys, Mannings, Roethlisbergers, and now Flaccos and celebrate SB's. We get to watch our QB's run really fast. Big Deal!

I'm a life long duck fan and don't post on anything, but thought I might throw my 2 cents in. I can understand your frustrations, expecially with the whole Vick experiment.  The one thing I can tell you about Chip is that he's does not care about outside influences.  I think you are going to see him give Vick a try because of his mobility, but thats it. If he isn't performing the way Chip expects him to, he won't hesitate to switch QB's.  He will do whatever it takes to Eagles in the position to win.  Chip likes a Quarterback that can run(Foles), not a running back that can throw(Vick).  His quarterback has got to be able to make good decisions and manage the game well.  Even as a DieHard Duck fan, I too am not sure about Dixon, but I think what he can be, is a decent 3rd string QB that understands Chips expectations and can be more of a teacher to Foles and help with the nuances of the read options Vick as well.  If you watch tape of Oregon's 2007 Sun Bowl when Chip was OC at Oregon, you will see that Oregons QB was Justin Roper.  A big, slow QB that ran Chips offense very well.  Having watched Foles throughout his P10 career I  wouldn't doubt seeing Foles as your starter if Vick doesn't quickly pick up on what Chips throwing down.  He's not going to blister people with his speed, but he definately has a head on his shoulders and all he has to do is hold the D-ends accountable with the occasional keep on the  read option when it presents its self.  When done correctly its the most beautiful thing!!!!  I look forward to watching the evolution of the Eagles.  Just give it a few games.

Thanks for the post. You're the second Ducks fan that's sent me a very informative post on the matter. Both have been valuable for me in trying to assess exactly what to expect out of Chip Kelly as our new coach. I've appreciated both, and they've made me much more optimistic about Chip Kelly than I was before. Your comments about Justin Roper were especially helpful. It seems like everybody has been assuming that Foles cannot possibly work in Kelly's system simply because he's not an Olympic sprinter. And that was not what I was getting from following Kelly's comments since he's been here. I now am much more hopeful that Chip Kelly is going to have a fair competition for QB and start the one who's best qualified. You can't ask for more than that. Thanks again. You've been very helpful to me. Another great post by a terrific Ducks fan.
