Eagles fire Washburn, re-hire Tommy Brasher

December 3, 2012, 7:19 am

The Eagles went 11-17 with Jim Washburn as defensive line coach. (US Presswire)

The Eagles in less than a week have parted with the wide nine's coach and its poster boy player.

Defensive line coach Jim Washburn was fired Monday and replaced by Tommy Brasher, who returns for a third stint with the Eagles in the same position.

Brasher also coached the defensive line in 1985 and from 1999-2005.

“Jim is a fine football coach and we appreciate the efforts he gave to this team over the past two years,” said head coach Andy Reid in a statement released by the team. “However, I determined that it was in the team’s best interest that we move in a different direction in terms of trying to maximize the production of that position group. We look forward to having Tommy Brasher back on board to work with the defensive line.”

Lets see. They fired Juan when the O was the main problem. Now they fire Washburn when the DB's are the main problem. Makes sense to Andy I guess. If this keeps up, we're a lock for #1 in this years draft.

meh.

It looks like we are trying to go back to the pre-dreamteam methodology that served us so well.

This might sound crazy, given that almost everyone with a soapbox has proclaimed him to be dead...but I am really starting to think that Reid will be with the Eagles in some way next year - maybe even as head coach.

I guess Reid was willing to tolerate Washburn's abrasive personality when the line was generating 50 sacks, but now not so much.  I bet his public grousing over cutting Adam Sandler was finally the last straw.  Wouldn't really surprise me if it comes out this firing was from above...this franchise tends to unload yappers.  I'm waiting for Howie to tell Andy he WILL play Foles the rest of the year hoping Andy resigns in protest so they don't have to pay him next year.

There's NO WAY Lurie can bring back Reid after the team finishes losing 12 straight or 11/12.  The last couple home games are going to be even emptier than last week's Carolina game, and I'm sure they're already getting colorful emails and phone calls from season ticket holders telling them what they can do with their tickets.

Hey...at least they're firing guys on the right side of the ball now LOL.

longshot maybe but never say never...I am thinking Reid hand picks the next HC and stays around in some capacity.

The wide 9 was not working this year like it did last year. Washburn did not want to abandon it. He had to go!
