GM Reggie McKenzie compares Khalil Mack to Clay Matthews

There weren't any "wow" plays from rookie linebacker Khalil Mack on Sunday, the first day players wore pads, but he is drawing some pretty good comparisons from important training-camp observers.

"He's reminded me of Clay Matthews from Day 1," Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie said. "He's one of those guys that knows how to set the edge, and he has length and power and some tools to rush the passer.

"He's got that first step, he can bend, he's relentless."

It's that last word that has McKenzie excited about Mack, the No. 5 overall pick, in the same way that he was about Matthews when the Packers drafted him in 2009 (McKenzie was Green Bay's director of player personnel.)

"That's what Clay was, you don't have tell him to go sic 'em," McKenzie said. "He just innately does that. Khalil is that same way."

The comparison is good almost to the pound - Matthews, a four-time Pro Bowler, is 6-foot-3, 255 pounds and Mack is 6-3, 252. But again, it was the heart and not the measurables that McKenzie noticed first.

"It's hard to find guys that are skillful that have that innate ability," he said.

Briefly: Cornerback Chimdi Chekwa was impressive again in DJ Hayden's absence. ... McKenzie said he is still optimistic that Hayden (foot) is back by the opener. ... Receiver Rod Streater was shaken after a hard shot toward the end of practice and coach Dennis Allen said he didn't know if it was a head injury.

We can't understate how we need him to be great. Anything less will be such a let down.

Interesting. This is what Dennis Allen said about Mack on the first day in pads:

Allen said first-round pick Khalil Mack had a solid, though unspectacular first day in pads.

“There were a couple of rushes that I thought were pretty good rushes, pretty impressive rushes,” Allen said. “I wouldn’t say there were a lot of ‘wow’ plays, but I thought some of the rushes he had off the edge were pretty good.”

So both were at the same practice. The GM who drafted him thinks he's a pro bowler and the HC thinks he's maybe as good as eh? pretty good I guess.

Maybe DA was trying to fire him up? Who knows. We will see soon enough. The proof will be in the house within just a few season games. I know many like to see guys develop but a top 5 pick shouldn't need time to develop. It should be like getting a top flight FA.

Really? Because I think that would be the first time Reggie ever compared a player to a non packer player.  Maybe because he never drafted any good CB's when he was with green bay noidea
