Packers cut DB Woodson; Raiders should begin pursuit

Packers cut DB Woodson; Raiders should begin pursuit

friday, february 15th, 2013 at 1:36 pm in oakland raiders.

Now that the Green Bay Packers made official what was speculated on most of the day, the Raiders should contact Woodson’s agent and see if there’s any interest in Woodson rejoining the Raiders.
Of course, it might be a futile exercise, given Woodson’s agent, Carl Poston, said that Woodson wants to play for a Super Bowl contender, and the Raiders seem much farther away from that than most other teams.
Still, it’s worth a shot. Woodson might be intrigued about finishing his NFL career with the team that drafted him in 1998 and exposed him to his first taste of postseason success.
Woodson joined a Raiders team fresh from a 4-12 season before his arrival. They were in the playoffs three seasons later, with Woodson playing a huge role at cornerback.
Naturally, the Raiders were 4-12 last season, too, and seem just as far away from being a legitimate contender as they were when Woodson first joined the Raiders.
Cost also would be an issue for a Raiders team that isn’t as flush with salary-cap space as other teams. Further, it’s unlikely that Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie would overspend to be reunited with Woodson.
In November, McKenzie talked about how difficult it was his first year with the Raiders, given their salary-cap constraints.
“I remember talking to Ted Thompson,” McKenzie said of the Packers general manager. “His rookie year, he was able to get Charles Woodson. I would have liked to have done that.”
Well, now McKenzie can make that happen.
Signing Woodson would allow the Raiders to leave Michael Huff at cornerback and give them something they have lacked for numerous seasons: an impact player on defense.
The Raiders need far more help than Woodson can provide, especially this late in his career. Still, McKenzie has to start somewhere. Bringing in a player as well respected and talented as Woodson would be viewed as just that kind of start.

The Raiders and McKenzie should go after him, reach out and see what can happen, Woodson's agent says he wants to play for a team that can make it to the super bowl.

This would be a great fit for him here though.

I am on board to get him back in silver and black.

I see him going to maybe in division rival Bears cheap two year deal revamping the defense but that offense if they address the OL is still very potent and is shown that with Cutler & Forte to be a force together . Now add to it they have Marshall and then giving them emerging rookie Alshon Jeffery that if they can add another nice receiver either via draft or free agency then could be enough to help push them . Woodson with adding to the secondary now of Tillman and Jennings that with Woodson would be one scary secondary that has 3 players that shown to be true ball hawks . Conte is a nice FS but damn a future hall of famer for at least two seasons too Mentor this kid would be nice to have on your team and hurt a bitter rival in the process too 2x a year .

That the Patriots is another team to watch for he is a Smart savy veteran that Bill likes and would help fill a huge hole for him for the secondary issues they have now and possibly losing Talib as a f/a too ?
That always a consistent AFC Championship contender so makes since for him and would easily take the smaller pay to go here for another ring . Plus could we see possibly a reunion here to with a more then likely released Nnamdi by Philly ? Cheap deal for both to go to a contender and team up one last time for rings ?

Could Denver be an option for him ? That's a lot of eggs in one basket to see if Peyton can stay healthy for another season . But he sure can help the defense out and wouldn't make the mistake like Moore made in the playoff game and cost them the game though .

9ers if Goldson leaves would be a cheap replacement and back to the bay area for him and a sure contender again and could help add some veteran leadership to the team too .

Silly link  eek1   Unless Reggie is going to offer Woodson a "Out of Whack" contract, a la Seymour style; Davis ain't around;  How old is Woodson? Raiders have far more needs...

Dunno if he would go to Pats - was his forced fumble that was overturned by the Tuck.

He is wanting a super bowl contender is what he is said to his agent . Well they have been that for most of this time since that Tuck rule call .

That he is a veteran player that is wanting one more ring before he hangs them up and calls it a career .

That I can see him as most players letting that call go from him in pursuit to getting his ring that he wants . Couple that with it would make since for them to also go after Nnamdi on a cheap deal and maybe get both of them as they are wanting rings now and both Smart players that fit a need for NE right now .

As noted, we have needs.... 1 being Safety and he'd do well for us there. But if he will only play for a SB contender he's not coming here.
